Purdue, likely to fall from the top ranking, is coming off a disappointing result at Nebraska earlier in the week, which has put the Boilers in 5th place in the conference standings and off a couple of games in the loss column to conference leader, Wisconsin. Not unlike two years ago, Purdue has dug an early hole in the standings with a trip to Bloomington looming early next week. Penn State dropped a close one at home to Northwestern and has lost two of its last three games but can still pose some problems for the Boilers.
In their last game, Penn State was led by guard Kanye Clary with 25 points in the loss to Northwestern. Clary is the leading scorer for Penn State as a sophomore guard. He averages 18.8 points per game, and he is the top shooter on the team with 22 3-pt FG's, connecting on 36.7% of his attempts. Clary has scored 18 or more in his last eight games, including a high of 29 in a win over Rider. Ace Baldwin Jr. is their only other scorer in double figures, a senior guard adding another 13.1 points and a team-high 4.4 assists per game. Baldwin only had six points against Northwestern, but had 25 in the previous game against Michigan. Their top post player is 6'11, 245-pound Qudus Wahab out of Nigeria, and e averages 9.9 points per contest and leads in rebounds with 8.6 per game. D'Marco Dunn is another scorer on the wing off the bench, as he adds 7.3 points as a 6'5 junior guard.
Penn State is currently ranked 113th in the nation according to KenPom. They rank 128th in offensive efficiency and 116th in defensive efficiency. Penn State plays fast on offense, they rank 51st in the country in tempo based on their pace of play.
Penn State matches up with Purdue a little differently than Nebraska. They don't have quite the size as Nebraska, and I expect Zach Edey to be more of an emphasis and factor than he was in Lincoln against the Cornhuskers. However, the Nittany Lions do have some perimeter threats from long-range, and if Clary, Baldwin, and company exploit the Boilers' perimeter/wing defense like Nebraska did, this could be a very competitive contest.
For Purdue, it really starts with coming out with a better focused and energetic effort on both ends of the floor (but particularly on defense) to get things back on track. There were some good stretches on Tuesday but not nearly enough consistency and attention to detail to avoid the defeat.
It will be interesting to see how the line-ups shake out today - Mason Gillis started the second half at Nebraska after a very solid first half - one of the few Boilers who had one. Regardless of today's result, they also have a huge road trip coming up Tuesday travelling to Bloomington.....we will find out in a hurry how tough this Boiler team can be....
Can the Boilers get back to basics and right the ship a little?
We shall see, starting in a little less than a couple of hours.....
Boiler Up, my friends....
