Rather than talk about their off the field issues, can somebody address their on the field success? It was reported Patterson started 5 games at tackle. How good was he? I noticed Blough and our offense seemed to have a lot more success towards the end of the year in his absence. How good is he in comparison to the other offensive linemen we recruited? If he returns, do you think he would start and make a positive impact? Or would he just provide depth? He certainly has the size I like in an offensive lineman.

Roberts is said to have a lot of versatility. I don't really remember him. I do remember our defense getting torched a lot And missing a lot of tackles, and being out of position a lot. I'd like to see Jallow and Winfield start, and Mackey looks decent. And surely, we have other dbs on our team. If he returns, would Roberts start and make an impact? Or would he provide depth? And at what position?

As I said, I don't really remember the contributions of either player. I just remember our overall results weren't that great with them, and people complained about a lack of depth without them. I noticed Brohm said he has spoken to Patterson. Are these two players ones who could make a difference? Or is it time to just move on?

Patterson is the best tackle purdue has.

Roberts would help as well and allow us to redshirt some freshman.

i would like to know what the hell is taking so long to either reinstate Patterson and Roberts as players or release them.

With Patterson, I would think it's pending the results of his court case which could take up to a year if it goes to trial. I've heard both players are Still attending classes. I also heard their suspensions did not come from the football coach. I'm not sure if they came from the AD, or the school. I believe in justice, but justice is often very slow.

On a related note, we are familiar with the 10 players who were suspended at Minnesota. Yes , I read the 80 page report. And their suspensions were upheld, but I haven't seen if they transferred or were dismissed or are just suspended for a period of time.

I would have to believe Purdue has a standard of conduct code. And regardless of any outside court action, that code should be acted on. I hate to see two students left in limbo.

seems like a really long time, for something like what was reported, just wondering what the delay was.

To discuss the off field issue that created this - I read that Patterson broke a 'former'teammates jaw after 'borrowing' his stuff. As much talent as this individual might have, I'm not sure he would be a good fit from a team chemistry perspective, and really sounds like a thug that does not represent our university very well.

If he is convicted, then he shouldn't be welcome back on the team.

4 of the 10 UMN players had their suspensions overturned. Elite DB Antoine Winfield Jr was reinstated and is one of the 4 returning for spring ball. It was reported the other (3) will also be back in spring if Fleck approves. Frosh QB Williams and RB Djam expulsions were reduced to 1 yr suspensions instead. Frosh DB's Hardin,Buford, D Johnson and DE T Johnson were all expelled.

There has been no followup detail concerning transfers of the other 6?

This is what bothers me and many others. A school doesn't have to wait until a trial is conducted to make a determination if they want to dismiss an athlete for violating their student code. To my knowledge, Smotherman was not charged with a crime. But he obviously violated the Purdue code of conduct. Purdue doesn't really need a trial to prove if Patterson punched his former room mate. Is Patterson trying to say it was an accident? or self defense? The school should be able to make their own determination rather than waiting.

The coach says it's out of his hands. I would hope the person in charge is capable of making a decision.

Just reading between the lines, the fact that this is dragging out means CJB wants these players back, but is awaiting a decision from the school. If the school has not taken disciplinary action why should he? Having your own team rules is fine and all, but this was all before CJB was on the scene. Not his job IMO to enforce rules retroactively.
And I for one would rather the school take its time and not rush to judgment based on accusations only. This isn't a title 9 issue, which means less legal responsibility on the coach to be judge and jury.

It appears they have chosen not to dismiss him based on violating the code as they can thus far determine.

Smotherman violated Painter's code. Very different situation given Hazell had no code.

well brohm should have a code. and so should Purdue athletics. I have to believe Painter doesn't have his own special code. and when the coach says it's out of his hands, that means the decision is being made above him. however, if brohm had a code, it would be nice if he enforced it. and yes, hazell did have a code of conduct and DID suspend several players last year besides just Patterson.

Hazell was lax with discipline

I found it humorous last year when Hazell announced he had suspended 4 players for violating team rules and two of those players were already suspended by the school.
