Our 2018 recruiting class is ranked # 100, right behind UMass

Northwestern has 14. Minnesota has 14. Wisconsin has 10. Purdue has one.

Did you forget that we finished DFL the past few years. Why would you assume we would be doing as well as all the aforementioned teams.

I did not assume that we would be recruiting as well as other B1G schools. My post was made to inform the gentle readers that we are not recruiting well.

Well that was one hell of a revelation. So what you believed to be the case actually is the case. I'm glad you noticed.

Purdue's last coach was really good at bringing in players early, how did that work out for everyone?

If you scroll down there is a thread entitled "Recruiting Advantage" in which the OP proclaims "But with a new and highly capable coaching staff and a new and fancy football facility, recruiting should improve rather quickly."

At this juncture, there is no reason to believe that will happen. Getting this thing turned around will be a long and difficult process.

Actually Hazel wasn't very good at bringing players in early either. He brought in a few, but was usually way behind other BIG 10 teams. He was just earlier than Hope who would say the season is where we do our recruiting. And that's how we got into the problem we now have. While Hope and hazel l waited unti l the season started to receive commitments, other BIG 10 teams already had a solid recruiting core of 10-12 to build on. . and the few players he did bring in, usually left. if you've read any of my previous posts made around this time last year, you would see me lamenting that to be successful, a coach needs to get commitments from players before they leave our Summer camps.

I won't attempt to compare Purdue recruiting to OSU or Mich. But I expect us to be on par with Illinois, Rutgers, Iowa, IU, Northwestern WKU, Western mich, Toledo, and Minnesota. and if we finish last again, I'll repeat what I said when we fired Hope. if our objective is to finish last, why did we fire our last coach? we can finish last and save a lot of money by not having to pay a buy out and a giving out a higher coaching salary.

I believe Brohm is far better than Hazell, but being able to get quality commitments is part of the job. and by summer's end, most of those quality recruits have narrowed their choices. And I really don't want to add 15 more 2 star athletes or Jucos or grad transfers next January like we did last year. My hope is that was a one time quick fix rather than becoming a recurring theme.

are you saying the money we invested in the new football facility had basically zero impact on Purdue recruiting, and it's the same this year as it's been for the past 5 years ? Athletes look, but they don't commit? and the ones that do commit only stay committed until they receive a better offer?

Seriously folks. It's June. Hazell would get decent commits after camp and thy would magically disappear by signing day. It doesn't matter what the class looks like now. It matters in February.
What are your expectations for this years recruiting class? Will we be in the top 65 or below?

Thats a good over under number. If we are in the 50s it will be a great class considering recent history.

rather than comparing us to ourselves and our past, and the national rankings, we need to start comparing our team to our opponents and other BIG 10 teams. If our class is ranked #50, but every other BIG 10 team is ranked higher, then our class is actually ranked LAST ! The national ranking doesn't matter as much as the BIG 10 ranking does. Simply stated, if every BIG 10 team continues to be better than us, our record will always be a losing one. We cannot expect to win if our team has the worst talent in the BIG 10. . I'm not saying our talent level is bad. But if every other team in the BIG 10 has improved their level of talent, we need to follow suit. if we EVER expect to be a competitive power 5 school, we need to start recruiting like one.

and I'm tired of people saying if we get early commitments, they'll just leave anyway. I'm also tired of seeing us scramble in the last two weeks to catch up to the rest of the field. Rather than adding 15 players two days before the signing deadline, we need to have our players in place, and be able to hold on to them.

Thats one of two signing days. There will still be activity in January
This is going to be quite interesting with two signing dates. Schools like Tennessee that typically get 35 commits will have some explaining to do to ten guys when they don't offer scholies on Dec 20th. Will those ten guys be dumb enough to stay with Tennessee for the second signing date?

In fact, think about ALL of the guys who commit and don't get scholies offered on Dec 20th. There is gonna be some serious reshuffling on Dec 21st.

And the hotshots who decide not to sign on Dec 20th. Will the Bamas and the Ohio States hold a scholie open for a "5 star maybe" or go ahead and sign a "3 star lock"?

This year is dead anyway. I'll worry more about how the on field scheme looks and the ratings for the next class. We are who we thought we were.

Here is my thought. Don't get too caught up in conference recruiting rank. Whether we are #9 or #14 doesn't matter much, as long as we have comparable talent and depth as our peers. For recruits, after the 2 big dogs there is a second pack of teams (PSU/MSU/UW/Neb) and then a main pack of everyone else. A reasonable expectation coming out of the grave in 2017 is to be in the mix of the main pack. Within that pack, any small differences in talent can and will be overcome with coaching and player development. This is where the Hazell regime double faulted. We started out with an inferior hand and then played our cards poorly on top of it.

If we remain in the 70's and 80's nationally, then there may not be enough talent there to develop. But if we get back into the 40's or 50's nationally and are right there in the pack with our Big Ten peers, even if technically still #13 or #14, I believe Brohm is in OK shape and hopefully with time and results on the field the recruiting will improve.

Right now we're 14th in the B1G at #100, behind #81 Rutgers. It will require a monumental effort to end up on par with Illinois, Iowa, IU, Northwestern and Minnesota.

We have one three star commit with 25 more on deck. How will it be a monumental task to end up on par with IU or Illinois who have 2 or 3 three star recruits?

Northwestern is #16. Minny is #19. Iowa is #43. Do you think we have a realistic chance of catching up with them? I'd love to see it and dearly hope I'm wrong but it seems that the early signing date is accelerating commits this year and we will have a hard time catching up.

I said Illinois and Indiana but I can see this class ending up in the 50's. We are going to sign at least 25 guys and unlike Hazell, Brohm is in on some pretty solid recruits with legit Power 5 options....

Minny and NW have an avg star rating of under 3. Unless they fill in the rest of their classes with a bunch of studs, they are probably going to end up somewhere around #40 +/- 10. There is certainly time for Purdue to reach top 50. With that said I expect more verbals to roll in for Brohm this summer.

Let's keep some perspective here that 90% of the teams in FBS can probably beat us on the field right now. The recruits we're pursuing will likely take a wait and see approach to see if we aren't going to be a complete laughing stock this season before making a firm commitment.

Unless you're a top five program, worrying about recruiting rankings in June is completely pointless. Several guys who commit early change their minds anyway.

You should probably go to sleep then if you are so tired. Probably why you are such a grouch and Debby downer on here.

So, in 4 days since OP Brohm received 3 commits, rose ~30 spots in the rankings, and demonstrated he has already opened doors to regional recruiting hot spots that were closed in recent years. Too early to panic = confirmed.

I second that.
