OT - Gary Patterson

I don't know that anything happened really other than not winning. They haven't gone to a bowl game since the end of the 2018 season and this year was particularly sucking.

"Not winning" is a headline of a story that contains a lot of interesting details as to why. How does the same coach go from playoff appearances to losing seasons? Did he lose important assistants? Not recruiting the same kind of players as before? Most established coaches with his record have a down season or two and then spring right back up (Ferentz, Kelly, etc.).

There are many things that went into it...new administration probably as much as anything...and, unrealistic expectations (due to the success that GP himself had).

Recruiting had not paid off as it had before...he did appear to have some coaching changes (although that could go either way...no better evidence of that than Purdue a year ago and then this year).

Bottom line...the guy did wonders there and for the program...just as others that have chased past success by wanting more, TCU will have a hard time likely finding the success that they had with GP in charge of the program.

Great coach who far surpassed the results of anyone at TCU before him. Probably should have left 5-10 years ago when he could have had any football job in the country. Instead he committed to them and is now shown the door. I had forgotten that TCU was left out of the party when the merger between Big 8/SWC became the Big 12. The success he had in the Mountain West got them back in the Big 12. If he wants another job, it won’t take long for him to be hired. Bowing out now gives him a leg up on any upcoming openings.

Was thinking the same thing. He could have had his pick of jobs when he was hot between 2005-17.

Are you sure he far surpassed the results of anyone at TCU before him

Yes, I’m sure. This was a program left for dead by not being invited into the Big 12. The success of this coach and his over achieving teams thru 2010, was the driving force that got TCU (the school, the Athletic Dept and every sport within the dept) back into the Big 12!! THAT was an even greater and lasting accomplishment than his impressive record. TCU owes Gary Patterson a whole lot more than they’ve given him. Hope he lands on his feet if he wants another gig.

7-3 vs the arrogant Asses at UT too. Heck, Patterson’s success helped his old TCU AD get the AD’s job at TX.

Another interesting twist of the Patterson story is that Jerry Kill apparently has never been able to get coaching out of his system in spite of the physical challenges he has faced while coaching.

Also could have very well had TCU in the first year of the playoff if there were no SEC/Big Ten bias. I give him a lot of credit for staying.....but that and a nickel gets you a cup of coffee these days.....it's big money business and very little loyalty either way....sorry to see him shown the door with a record of 160-57.

Be careful what you ask for, TCU. Other than Dennis Franchione, you'd have to go back to the 50's and 60's for any sustained success before Gary Patterson.

That's also an intriguing point about Nebraska.....would certainly be an upgrade IMO.
