Oscar Cluff to visit Sunday

I like the announcement that he has basically narrowed his choices to Iowa state and Purdue. And he has decided to visit Purdue first.

I’m not worried about Jacobsen. I doubt he plays more than 25 minutes next year. We don’t have much quality depth in the front court, so he could easily see 30+ minutes at 4 or 5. He could be that experienced big man we need.

As for NIL, I have to believe we can offer him as much money as Iowa st can offer.

As for Iowa st, they are a good team but I’m not sure what they will have coming back next year. If he wants to be part of a championship team, I would think he’d love to be part of a team with Braden, tkr, Jacobsen and Loyer. He seems like a perfect fit much like jones was.

And looking at the pros, Purdue has produced a bunch lately!

What I really like about him is unlike the guy from Iowa, this player likes to rebound!

Seems like a perfect setting for a visit. He should get a great chance to see the Purdue crowd at the Houston game. Maybe Lance could come down and do his dance. Maybe Edey or ivie will visit this weekend!

Purdue gets first crack at him. Set the stage and make an impression! Do it right and he may decide not to visit Iowa st

Why’s that? What chemistry is getting messed up?
Shows we are now actively recruiting over our guys that are still playing. I get that’s berg and burgess in this case, but still. If you don’t think that affects player psyche or put more pressure on them, that’s fine, just throwing it out there.

Completely disagree. There are multiple ways to win, but having a team cohesion is always a great asset.
It’s a nice to have, not a need to have. Talent is 100X more important. With college free agency, teams are built to win now. Purdue is a massive outlier. But the proof is in the fact that several top 10 teams have 60-100% turnover and still win.

These guys know what they’re signing up for. It’s the coaches job to constantly try to make the team better, which by definition, means bringing in better talent than what you have currently. If this hurts their feelings, maybe they should play D3 or something.

Got ya. I don’t think it will mess with any chemistry and the only guy we would be recruiting over is berg. RB is getting mins next year. And if anything, it creates competition. Also, we don’t know if berg has already told paint he is leaving.

But IMO, it shows the team that the staff is going to compete for next year, as well and is trying to make the team better.

I understand what you’re saying though.

literally have a game in the sweet sixteen tonight.. feels at least a little relevant to me..
Is it still relevant if we lose by 20?
Do you think any Coach in the S16 isn’t going to say how much his players enjoy being around each other and what great chemistry they have?

And that would have what to do with anything in this discussion?
You missed my earlier post. I said he was basically the third greatest big man that’s transferring and we missed out on the first two. And that painter has a knack of transforming the second and third best choice into the best player.

The discussion also involved transfers. And it’s a fact the painter was recruiting both jones and his SIU team mate. And i think it would be interesting to think what might have been if Jones’s team mate had accepted painter’s offer instead of jones.

The correlation is that painter has a way of turning his third choice into being the best player. When all is said and done, painter will reveal whom else he was also recruiting by lost out on

Why would he mess with team chemistry or affect DJ?
This.

Chemistry…. Any chemist worth his Bunsen burner can look at next year’s roster and clearly observe that Purdue is missing some essential elements from its periodic table!

Any of our partial contributors who might be offended at having to EARN minutes next year should take a hard look at the portal.

IMO the impurity of bad “chemistry” is rendered inert in the crucible of winning.

I wish I had your optimism on DJ.
Painter thought he was better than Furst, Berg and Burgess.
That doesn't give me a warm fuzzy feeling.
Let's hope DJ can make a full recovery from his injury.
He had some hops and could be the rim protector we need.

I think he IS better than those 3. Do you not?

I’m going to be efficient and reply to two posts with just one post.

My confidence in Jacobsen is not that he beat out Furst, Burgess and Berg to be our starting center. But rather it is two fold.

First, he made Painter change his mind about starting TKR at center and let him remain at the 4. The original plan before Jacobsen arrived was to have tkr play center and have Heide as the 4.

Second. Jacobsen Wasn’t just a part of that national team. He was one of its two star players and they had some very hot and hyped recruits on that team. And they won a championship. So he is both good and knows what it takes to be a winner.

While Edey didn’t start as a freshman we have had several big men who did start as freshmen. And while Jacobsen may not be playing games this year, he has been healthy enough to practice and train with the team and Purdue’s coaches next year. He will be ready

I compare him to Gonzaga’s Holgrem(sp). Who turned out to be pretty decent.

Holmgren is a NBA star, that is quite the comparison lol

Lol you actively recruit over current players every time you recruit a high level high school player.

Competitors don't run away from competition. They don't expect Paint to not look for the best players to help the team. You actively demean them when you treat them like fragile flowers.

I mean I didn't share the future NBA star assessments after five minutes some folks have but it seems pretty undeniable he's better than those three to me.

Painter was also the first big time school to offer Holgren a scholarship. Painter has an eye for talent. I see a lot of similarities. They are both lean and tall. They both love to block shots. They both love to shoot outside shots. Neither player is very physical.

But the most telling sign is painter saw their talent and recruited both players at an early age in their high school career. Many people forget that Jacobsen skipped a year of high school to arrive at Purdue a year early.

Probably the biggest reason I like Jacobsen is that Painter recruited him. Painter has an eye for talent.

Look at Edey. Painter only recruited three big men that year. And yes, all three players became all Americans. Purdue fans may hate Dickinson but we can’t argue that he doesn’t have talent. And the player who went to Creighton also had talent. What other coach can say I recruited only 3 big men and they all made all American?

I may not like some of painters coaching philosophy but I will never speak ill of his talent evaluation

I like your post - dead on - you have to go for it when you have the chance and that’s next year.

As a coach you always have to assess your weaknesses and strengths and recruit the best players that fit your philosophy. If you continue to lose, you change your philosophy our you change your coach . You should never recruit a weaker player just because you have a player at that position! We recruited Edey when we already had Furst projected to play center! Furst was a lot higher ranked recruit than Edey.

Why not Wemby ?

Why not Wemby ?
Because I like to do realistic comparisons. There were many people who had doubts about Holgren. He was not heavily recruited when he first appeared on the recruiting scene. A lot of blue blood teams didn’t recruit him . Did IU recruit him?

Wembly was a star that was too good to play college ball.

I think so too. Painter thought so.
IMO, he needs to be a lot better for the team to make a big jump.
Nothing against the three I mentioned but let’s be realistic.
The center position was holding us back all year.

Oscar Cluff, On3’s No. 1 overall player in the transfer portal, has scheduled two official visits, according to a source.
The 6-foot-11 transfer center from South Dakota State will be at Purdue from Sunday, March 30th through Tuesday, March 1st. He will then head directly to Iowa State and will visit the Cylones from Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday, March 2nd.

Cluff averaged 17.6 points, 12.3 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game this season. He has one year of eligibility remaining.
Cluff was All-Summit 1st Team and All-Defense this season“

Went to JUCO for first two years. So could be have two more years left?

Sounds like a great get for us if we land him, but I find it hard to believe a kid from SDS is the top player in the portal.

Teams with bad chemistry aren’t in the sweet sixteen. Duh.

Look no further than an hour south…
That wasn’t the question. The question was whether hitting the portal hard could disrupt team chemistry. The makeup of the S16 teams proves that you can completely build a winning roster through the portal and chemistry doesn’t matter.

I have no idea if he is or not, but plenty of examples of great major conference players that came from smaller schools. Knecht last year is perfect example.

Logical fallacy.

IF tkr plays the 4 then jacobsen is playing alot. Another center is needed. Getting this guy improves the team, adds depth, and competition. Imo, jacobsen will be a great player at purdue but maybe not next season. He will be a big contibutor on defense at a min. and a solid piece to go with the players coming back. I would love to get this kid and another athletic guard whos been around for a few years and has some handles.
