Omer Mayer has committed

It makes for a strong bench that should allow Purdue to weather most storms by extending energy that others cannot match. Smith, Loyer, Harris, Cox, Mayer, Benter, and West that is a lot of talent with little drop off. Sub frequently to keep fresh legs in the game.

Add to that TKR, DJ, and Oscar at the 4/5. That just leaves an athletic 3/4 to fill out the roster. Purdue is looking good and deep.

Appears to have good handles and size, fairly athletic. Will he start day one? Only if he plays decent defense at this level. These video highlights can't tell us that. Likely will have to earn a starting slot as the season moves forward.
And that’s what he said he wanted out of a team…to earn mins. So hope he backs that up

I don't see Mayer starting this year but he will get minutes. He will get the chance to learn from Braden for a year then him and Ertel will man the point potentially for years if the portal doesn't get them.

We are so deep, if we can keep the injury bug away this might even be a better team than when we had Troy Lewis, Everett Stevens and Todd Mitchell.

Our practices will be intense. I hope our preseason schedule is equally as intense. If you want to be the best you need to play the best.

Plus an in season tourney. Wish it could be the one in Vegas for NIL money, but maybe Battle 4 Atlantis or something.

And I assume some decent mid majors

I watch a fair amount of Euro League games online. It's a different game than D1 the 24 second shot clock spreads the floor and the pace quickens. It is fast paced without hurrying wide open shooters league. The games seem to be much cleaner fouls are fouls and so on. Carson Edwards led the league last year in scoring the league is made for him and he owns it. Good money for the top tier players. Not so much for the role players maybe as low as 25k. I like this pick up. We are beyond deep! You know your deep when your 7'4 absolute weapon may not start. If as some on here think another starter from this sweet 16 team may be replaced. We tried to win with the big 3 last year just too much to lose in Daniel and his rim protection IMO. Pretty sure this isn't done yet.

Anyone know if Omer signed (or plans to sign) a NLI? Signing started today.

Good post, does this close Purdue pursuing a 3? I still have hopes for Davis. Also, I’ll say 50/50 Harris stays, not sure he’ll be patient for another season of playing off the bench, I hope he sticks around, not sure now.
Harris and CJ did a meet and greet at university bookstore on the 12th, so I’d assume that means he’s staying. Although, there are 6 days left to enter the portal.

I mean, is this the most exciting offseason in Purdue Basketball history?

Baby Boilers & Grant and Kramer year was set up for FF4 in indy, and Hummel went down midseason? So the hype in 2009 was real

This past season, we lost Edey, and we were wondering if Colvin/Heide would step up

There was hype before Edey's Senior year, but we came off a loss to a 16 seed.

But this year, add the best big man in the portal, get Jacobsen back, land a potential international star, get Smith, Loyer, and TKR back for senior year, and most likely are adding a 6'8" role player that shoots 41% from three?

And we're now living in a world where the transfer portal has diluted dominant teams and we're unlikely to run into another 2024 UConn type team?

I think we'd have to go back to Glenn Robinson as far as hype going into a season

So all the folks who hated the portal, who said Matt won't use it, that we should stick to high school recruits, how ya feeling now?

Omer Mayer was not in the portal.

That being said, it's an evolving world. Matt evolves with it. Would he rather get 13 home-grown kids every 4 years? For sure. But he also knows he needs to think outside the box on occasion.

Those are three tough games. I'm sure the tourney won't be a cakewalk either. That is exactly what we need.

We are getting at least two players out of the portal. And the portal and the rulings behind it opened up the ability to get guys like this who are ostensibly pros overseas.

I'm not talking about Matt. I and others here said Matt was going to go get 2-3 guys this year. A lot of folks thought that was inconceivable and the debbil.

It's not outside the box, it's literally the box. Trying to build your team with just HS recruits is outside the box.

I can see a starting backcourt of Smith, Loyer and Mayer. I hope Cox and Harris can see past next season…but Cox and Harris will still log lots of minutes at the 1,2,3 positions. I don’t think we sign another wing now.

9 man rotation…Smith, Loyer, Mayer, Cox, Harris, Kaufman-Renn, Burgess, Cluff and Jacobson. I hope Burgess can give us quality minutes at the 4.

Where do you live so I can send you a pat on the back?

We're getting at least 2 players out of the portal because we lost 4 players to the portal. And yes, the landscape has changed. Doesn't mean anyone has to like it.

What I meant by outside the box was signing Mayer, not the portal. Since this thread is about Mayer.

We'd have gotten at least these first two regardless. We're all going to like it just fine this time next year.

You gotta add Benter and maybe West to that if he doesn't redshirt. I'm not sold on Burgess and don't see him playing much if the other three stay healthy.

I don't think some of you truly understand how good this kid is. He's 19 and plays impactful, productive minutes in the 2nd best basketball league on the planet (2nd only to the NBA). This is equivalent of getting a 5 star HS recruit. He's 6'4", has a B1G ten body, walks in as our 2nd best ball handler and passer, and his best attribute is his shooting. Of course he will start and play the 3rd or 4th most minutes per game on the team. Incredible pick up by Painter and his staff!
