Ohio State at Purdue: MASTER DISCUSSION THREAD

Any word on whether Devin Royal or Meechie Johnson are available? Both missed the IU game.
Saw some OSU insider saying Meechie might be done for the season.

Nothing yet on Royal. Curious on Parrish since he got banged up against IU.

Take no one lightly. No emotional let down from the big road wins out West. It does no good to win on the road then lose at home. One game at a time, 40 minutes, all you've got.
Remember last year when they fired the coach and we were the next game. Looked like it should be an easy game and then we lost. Hope that we have some revenge motivation, especially from the big 3 who started that game

Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. Tonight, the Ohio State Buckeyes (10-8; 2-5) visit Mackey Arena to take on the #11-ranked Purdue Boilermakers (15-4; 7-1). Tip is scheduled for approximately 7:30 pm (Eastern time) with television coverage on Peacock. This will be the only regular season match-up between the schools.

Projected Starting Line-ups:

Ohio State - Sean Stewart, Micah Parrish, Devin Royal (questionable)/Evan Mahaffey, Bruce Thornton, and John Mobley Jr.

Purdue - Trey Kaufman-Renn, Caleb Furst, CJ Cox, Fletcher Loyer, and Braden Smith

Ohio State has lost three straight close games by a combined five points, most recently at home last Friday in overtime to Indiana, 77-76. Purdue has won seven straight and returns home after sweeping a West coast trip to Washington and Oregon.

The Buckeyes are led by Bruce Thornton, averaging 17.4 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game. Devin Royal, who is coming off a wrist injury, provides 13.8 points and 7.4 rebounds per game, and the other key contributors have been John Mobley Jr. and Micah Parrish with 12.5 points and 10.5 points per game, respectively.

Ohio State is 34th overall in the KenPom ratings, 44th in offensive efficiency and 39th in defensive efficiency. They are right about at the median in adjusted tempo rated 185th. Purdue is currently 10th overall in KenPom, 8th offensively and up to 22nd defensively. Adjusted tempo rating is 290th.

Despite its recent losses, Matt Painter knows Ohio State is a formidable opponent with some talented players - "Obviously, they're a really good team......beat Kentucky on a neutral court. They're 2-5 in our league, and they're three possessions away from being 5-2......very good individual pieces. They have some younger guys playing.....they have a good balance to their roster."

Look for Ohio State to try and be physical with Purdue, especially working through Bruce Thornton, who is quite capable of backing defenders into the paint and either distributing or taking his shot. Thornton had 22 points last year, leading Ohio State to an upset of Purdue. This is definitely a team that will challenge Purdue's renewed ability on the defensive end, as far as limiting dribble penetration into the paint. Ohio State is not particularly consistently adept from long-range, although they have potential with John Mobley Jr. and Micah Parrish. The Boilers will probably choose to live with more attempts from long-range and focus extra attention on Thornton. With Royal available, that gives the Buckeyes another option and ability to attack the glass.

For the Boilers, it's more of the same in taking care of the basketball and spirited effort on defense from the opening tip. They did not shoot particularly well on the West coast, so hopefully for them, the home environment helps with that - expect CJ Cox to have more of an impact on offense, as Ohio State will look to limit Braden Smith and Fletcher Loyer.

Purdue needs to keep the momentum going with Michigan coming up on Friday evening before a week off. This is a capable opponent that can play a physical brand of basketball. Will the Boilers be ready for it?

We shall see, starting in about an hour and a half or so......

Boiler up, my friends.

If you don't have Peacock, I am not, NOT saying that if you were to go on to YouTube and search for the Purdue/OSU game that someone has on occasion been streaming the live feed of these games so that some enterprising, cheap individual could watch it. Just want to be clear, I am NOT saying that. Not.

He has to be among the leaders in frequent flyer miles.....and he might need a scoping at the end of the season.
Three days off since the start of the calendar year:
