Oh boy

It says as one of his lawyers. I can't imagine how many the university has on this case. Oates brought 3 guys in that were involved in a murder. Make no mistake Miller knew more than is being lead on. Not enough for jail in my opinion. More than enough to sit a few games. That was butchered from the start and the whole thing looks terrible. I'm shocked Oates is still the coach.
With the seven figures Miller is getting paid to play at bama...I mean getting paid for his NIL, he can afford a few lawyers

this is not true. In Indiana, I can buy a gun with no registration to the feds, then transfer it to anyone who has an Indiana driver's license. No problem. There is paperwork on file for a handgun with the dealer, if I buy it from a dealer, but that paperwork is never given to the feds. I can buy any handgun I want from another seller within the state.
Thank you for forcing me to look that up to settle conflicting information. You are correct. I purchased a handgun for my daughter and was told at the gunshop that it was a requirement that she would need to have it registered in her name.

I believe Federal gun laws over ride State laws.
The purchase of ANY gun in Indiana requires a back ground check, even at a gun show.
You have to register a hand gun.
I've waited for the 20 minute or so for the background check on many purchases. (No big deal but it is required)
And yes you can sell a hand gun to someone without notifying anyone but I'm not sure that is legal by Federal Requirements. You also take the risk of blame if the gun s found to be used in any unlawful action.

Show me how and where it is registered in Indiana? Paperwork is filled-out but not sent anywhere. It is available for inspection at a future time. There hundreds of guns being sold person to person in Indiana. It is totally legal as long as the buyer proves they are an Indiana resident. The person-to-person seller of a handgun to a resident of Indiana bears no responsibility for the future use of that gun. It has been tested in court.

What are these federal requirements regarding a handgun? I don't know of any. Silencers, fully automatic, but not for semi-automatics.

How did she register it. Yes, YOU cannot buy a gun for her. That is a strawman purchase and against federal law. SHE must be the purchaser. On the other hand, you could buy it, then sell it to her without any background check or paperwork. (In indiana)

I bet his term papers are a real treat to read.
maybe hard to find the student part in the student athlete? Wish the good players had some place to go rather than a college "IF" they don't really fit the student athlete expectations. Miller may have been a good enough student, in spite of his language, but his involvement with a gun and death are something I hope to never see at Purdue.

What is a handgun and what is a rifle...and how are the feds attacking this right? While we were asleep the Feds quietly through the night…with no media coverage as usual, by non-elected bureaucrats issuing edicts attacking the rights of citizens to protect themselves. Controlling law-abiding citizens and restricting their attempts to defend their property without ANY consequences to the killers that now have less lethal action to prevent them from harming the law-abiding citizens…all the while there are so many national concerns that are deliberately not addressed. It is one of many bounds the feds have entered and shouldn’t. You would almost think the feds want dependency on them… 😉 enough for this, just adding to the topic a bit…

barrel length defines handguns ... 18" is the shortest shot gun barrel. 26" for a rifle. Less is a handgun. BUT!!! With the latest laws, it doesn't make any difference. no permit required for a handgun. The problem, as with Big Pharma and some other issues, is the gun lobby. If they were not so active, gun "laws" would be made by senators and representatives voting as their constituents want them to.... not the gun lobby.

What I posted was the feds not following handguns or rifles rules in the past, but actually changing them and changing them by a non-elected entity. The link now takes pistols particularly and if it has a brace for the arm to stabilize the pistol for accuracy, it NOW has to be registered with the feds for potential confiscation which is the ultimate goal OR the person will get a felony.

It is but another step towards the ultimate removal of guns. Any gun you buy at a dealer gets a background check and so now they added another thing to hinder a citizen of his or her rights while doing nothing to stop what they say they want to stop. You would be surprised at the number of people that actually believe an AR is a machine gun. The media has made a lot of people dumb at a LOT of things. The killing streets are only now a problem because of the lack of culture...guns have been around for a long time. It's like say people are heavy because of forks. I don't know that it will hold up in court, but that would happen after the 120 days and they would already have their data. With a litany of gun grab laws over the years it is but another violation of the 2nd (which protects all teh others) of "shall not be infringed".

I was buying it for her as a gift. She was with me, and we wanted it registered in her name at the time of purchase.

Shouldn't they be voting as the constitution says, not their constituents?

You don't have to register a handgun by Indiana or Federal law.

So if an individual wants to purchase one off another private individual, there might be no record at times of such transactions (at least in IN) and everything is legal as long as both the seller and buyer have no felonies or other restrictions, correct? Like say and Idk if this is even a thing, but if someone is selling one on Craigslist (or whatever) and a buyer goes to purchase at the seller's home.

I did google this as was curious and *think* I understand the law after reading but asking you (or anyone in this thread) because it seems like some of you guys are quite knowledgeable in this area and just seeking to know the law, thanks!

Not that it matters but I consider myself more or less "neutral" on 2nd Am - or even perhaps slightly pro 2nd Am (if anyone cares, lol) But I simply have no need for a firearm and only seek to understand some of this better

Yes. If you legally qualify to possess a firearm, in the state of Indiana you can do a private gun sale with no background check. But you must both be residents of Indiana.

ON EVERYTHING...not just the 2nd which protects all teh others. Look what has happened to the 1st? Then how many times has the 10th been violated? Oh well, I don't want to turn this in to a constitutional thread, but there are reasons to be concerned about a lot of things...

Don't trust Craigslist. Be cautious of anyone selling a gun from home that you don't know. The gun could be hot...you could be set up. They can take to a gun dealer and sell on consignment or you could meet them there. The world is replete with examples of countries using gun control resulting in millions being killed. The Founding Fathers were quite smart to try to limit the govenment. That's right, not to limit the people, but the government.

The only massacre I'm aware of in the USA was when some Mormons convinced the settlers going to California that the Indians would kill them unless they gave up their guns to show they were not a threat to the Indians and the Mormons would escort them to safety. Once they gave up their protection they (120) ...men...women...children were killed in what is known as The Mountain Meadows Massacre in 1857. Years ago I would never have thought the things I have seen the last few years would ever happen...but they did. Here is a bit on gun control across teh globe...across time that many need to understand the patterns...

Thanks for sharing your thoughts Tj. Yeah, I'm not looking to buy or sell anything, just was curious to the process and wanted to better understand.

Just to clarify what Pat69 said, if I meet you in the Walmart parking in the state of Indiana and we check each other's driver's licenses to verify we are residents. I can buy a gun from you without proving I don't have a felony. We don't have to sign any paperwork. No serial numbers or models. Nothing. That is the law. On the other hand, the responsible gun owners that I know won't sell a gun to a total stranger unless they are a member of a group and people I trust know them. Indiana Gun Owners is a great group. BTW, Craigslist and FB marketplace don't allow ads for guns.

Yes, this definitely helps explain things along with what Pat shared. Also, browsed the link you shared and glad there are responsible people out there when it comes to these type of transactions. Thank you Do Dah
