Darn! I thought you were breaking news that Painter was implementing a zone defense. Here's hoping Purdue adjusts to Western's odd front zone at halftime!
Here is what I wrote in another site. Thje game was pretty boring and I was talking to a little boy and his dad about some fundamentals he could work on and so I could have missed a few things. That said, I wrote the following:Here's hoping Purdue adjusts to Western's odd front zone at halftime!

Tonight ...it was not an approach of finesse for Haas, but power. He still doesn't get up quick and may never, but he bullied like he should every game. It was the most physical he has played in a while. The result...Purdue was in a bonus with 60% of the first half to play and double bonus with 50% of the first half. Biggie was a rebounding magnet with 21 boards and 21 points. 21 boards!
Interesting tidbit on Western Ill. Played man and then switched to a 3-2 or more flattened 1-2-2 zone. This is a huge hole in the middle, but by flattening the top into more of a 3-2 it took away some of the high post that would be there when the zone was extended. Purdue adjusted and actually put Biggie and Haas down low on the blocks to screen in that zone as Dakota (who worked his butt off on D) worked the baseline to try to get open for a baseline shot. Biggie and Haas just stepped into the lane in front of the zone from time to time looking for a med/low post feed, since the high post was not open. This zone was effective for a couple fo possessions and then Purdue just never went high post. I was happy to see a much more physical presence in Haas.
yes, and it is really amazing he shoots so well with his huge hands. John Garrett shot well, but he had small hands. Haas was forcing contact and punishing the defense with fouls on their players, team fouls to get to the line for freebies and just much more physical. I think he ended up on the floor two or three times and Mackey shook from the force! The game was dull and boring...and not surprising considering Saturday's comeback. Need one Wed. and then I assume a couple of days off for the players and get ready for the real season...Isaac Haas was also 12-13 from the FT line.....that is CASHing in and making the defense pay.

Haas was physical, biggie was physical and then Vince comes in with finesse and gets a few up and unders that made the W. Ill players look a little silly...
He would, but he likes to win.Darn! I thought you were breaking news that Painter was implementing a zone defense.

Um, No. The rules of the board say if you don't call it a zone you can't take advantage of it's benefits even if they come naturally.I like that, but I know zones are not THAT bad. It is just my preference adn belief that man is the better all around D and improves more over the season. What I would like for those ...and Nag would be one, is to just take a snapshot from time to time when Purdue is in D and the opponent has brought the ball up and is on top. For a split second, don't follow the players or ball...but just quickly glanse from time to time and see a "pretty natural" alignment of Purdue's defenders. See if their positioning many times doesn't appear to be a 2-3 zone...ONLY where they are standing...not how it is played. This is nothing relative to Purdue, but when I talk about balancing the court (players somewhat equally spread on teh court for better spacing and rebounding), which is how most teams align offensively, it allows teh D to also be somewhat balanced and THAT places players spread somewhat equally on the court as well...like a zone. If the alignment of players at a given time gives an appearance similar to a zone...can't those players take some of the advantages of the zone as well?
