I hope he watches episode three of The Last Dance about 100 times.

He’s already a lock down defender, a hard worker and a good rebounder for a guard. If he put himself in the mindset that every loose ball was his and he was gong to focus on doing all the little things that no one else wants to he could make himself a lot of money for a long period of time. He has all the tools.

I agree. Maybe there's a spot for him when you need a big athlete to go be a pain in the ass defensively for a little while on the other teams star.
But.....offense sells seats in the NBA, and even though he may not score much, the refs might not let him use all his defensive tools to disrupt another teams scorer. Stars get the star treatment.
Just a thought.

I was thinking the same thing when watching that episode. Focus on what you do well like rebounding, defense, and effort and then be the best at it.

If he is given a chance I think he may be better as a pro than at PU. The game is a little more open and I see him being able to put in 10 pts a game if he can consistently get to the rim and do his thing on D.

I’m trying to think of similar players to Nojel in the NBA.. I don’t recall their names but there are at least two who come to mind .. a small forward for Oklahoma City and a guard for Philly.

While many players are very good all around players, it does take an elite skill to be in the NBA. Nojel’s defense is just that. If he can put together a great post up game, he has a chance at a roster spot as he can defend 1-3 at the nba level

I agree. You would think that a team would have a spot for an absolute lockdown defender. And he's shown that he can lockdown the best players in college, so I assume he would have success as a defender in the NBA.

I watched the last dance and that episode with Rodman I thought of my son and if any of you watched last years draft a Lot of guys were drafted bcuz of their shooting and defense. Marcus smart pay Beverly PJ tucker and some others got contracts bcuz of their defense. Yes they all can knock down 3s and score but their defense is what got them paid including draymond green. Character matters no off the court issues matters he has the ability to help a team if given an opportunity and if u look at those players all of them except green are smaller than him and they getting older. 2 rookie players come to mind if u watched them this season from Boston and 76ers both plays that role why both got drafted yes both can hit an open 3 but both got drafted bcuz of there character traits and ability to defend and rebound. Nojel 6”7 at 230 pounds with a 6”9 wingspan quick athletic quick hands with lateral quickness at that size that can guard 1/4 position bcuz he has the size and strength to so so. He can handle and pass the ball great vision smart great locker room guy he brings a lot to a team that does translate to the NBA. More spacing will be good for him can facilitate more in more spacing. Game is faster in the nba he plays better when he can play faster. His shot and offense with more confidence will come back but it’s not out the realm of possibilities that my son if given an opportunity he could be an asset to a team a few minutes a game. He works hard plays hard has the work ethic to get better and he will put in the work to fix a part of his game if he does that he has a chance.

Watching the Last Dance (also have watched the Celtics/Laker rivalry on 30 for 30) you see how NBA basketball has really changed over the last 20-25 years. Those fist fights and intentional fouls to really try to hurt someone and how officials and the league just let those go normally with just a regular foul called.

Today, there would be fines, daily talk show and social media discussions, multiple game suspensions, etc.

I agree that not enough has been said about Nojel being a great locker-room guy. Not only is he professional and mature off the court, but he does a great job with the little stuff that coaches love. I never remember a time when we heard about him being late to practice, for instance. It seems like when he makes good plays, the guys on the bench jump up and cheer for him more than most other guys on the team. He is a beloved teammate, for sure. That goes a long way.

He's got a great reputation as a good guy and he'll land somewhere in the world and make lots of $$$ playing basketball.

Stats for their last years in college:

Draymond Green:
16.2 P
10.6 R
3.8 A

Marcus Smart:
18.0 P
4.5 R
4.8 A

PJ Tucker
16.1 P
9.5 R
2.9 A

Pat Beverly:
12.1 P
6.6 R
2.4 A
.378 3 Pt% on 172 attempts

These guys are good defenders, but they were drafted and paid because they demonstrated they could also score. The way the NBA game is played now with emphasis on shooting/scoring you have to be able to score not just defend. I hope Nojel shows a drastic improvement on the offensive end. That would make us a much better team.

As a junior, Rodman averaged 26.8 points and 15.9 rebounds, and as a senior, he averaged 24.4 and 17.8, leading Southeastern to the NAIA tournament both years. Copy pasted. He can aim to be that type of player, but who Rodman was in the Pros, was not him in college. You gotta be able to score against college athletes.

Andre Roberson is the best comparison I can think of ... around 10 points and 10 rebounds per game in college

Well he got his work cut out for him and time on his hands it’s not like he won’t work at it and work hard to improve.

You said it all with ‘NAIA’

If Eastern stays I don’t think our team can afford to help him develop his offense skills. I think he and TReed are right for him to end his college career and move on to some professional basketball venue where he can work on his skills full time. This is a win win departure.

another one to add to my list of blocked users... keeping me busy with their nonsense

Nojel will be able to play professionally in some way. Defense and rebounding matter. Nojel can do that at a very high level. He could slow down some of the top guys in the league.

On the offensive end, Nojel has to be able to make a top level guy work on defense. He could do that. He’s got to be able to work an inside out game. Be able to draw fouls and hit mid-range jumpers at 50% clip.

Nojel isn’t a 3 point shooter at this point in his career. He needs to work on his shot and get his confidence. He will be fine. I doubt he’s an NBA guy right now, but he could be in the next few years.

He reminds me of Ron Artest athleticcally and on defense. He does not have Ron’s offensive game at this point. Time will tell.

Nojel biggest problem has been confidence lack there of especially offensively. When he’s home he shoots the ball just fine 3 pointers and all it’s all mental. He scored last season had a few games this season he scored he shot the ball albeit midrange shots but he did shoot the ball more this season. Offensively he’s not challenged he worked all summer on his shooting played in a few Pro AM games in Chicago was scoring on all levels I cannot tell u why when he get to school playing in games it suddenly changes. Could be he he didn’t keep up with the same work ethic he did at home as he should of did at school can’t explain it. But I it’s this time off and no basketball to play he realizes that he cannot waist opportunities so he has been totally focused on getting his mind body and game right. He has a guy who will be working specifically on connecting with others him mentally and he will help him why he help prepare Tyler herro during his predraft workouts to get him ready. Shooting specialists and he’s been knowing my son since a kid so he getting to help he needs to help him gain back his confidence in himself and helping him fix the mechanics on his shot like starting over in a sense but getting his muscle memory back to doing what it was did b4. He will work grind non stop till he get it right.

Best of luck to him. I hope he’s back as a Boiler. If not... I understand. Glad to hear he’s working on his game. I hope he relaxes, is aggressive and looks for opportunities, and has fun.

What nonsense! Painter and Purdue would absolutely love Nojel to improve his offense. Why would you say this?

Wait, .... I went back and looked at your previous posts. Most of them are asking Nojel to leave, or talking about how he is going to lose minutes, etc. So, ... why don’t you like Nojel. You seem to think he is a detriment to our team. I don’t think there are more than two people that think that way, but that’s okay. Why don’t you come out and explain your dislike?

You couldn’t be more wrong. His defense and rebounding alone earn him some slack on the offensive end. I don’t know what position he’ll be at, but if he’s on the team, he’ll be out there a bunch.

At Purdue? Yes, he’s a starter for us. He will get 20-25 minutes easily. If he returns to Purdue, he should work on the following things to help the team:

1. FT shooting. He’s been very good in stretches. If he can finish games, he’s a major asset at the end of games. Also, he will draw fouls and get to the line.
2. Work on his inside-out game. He needs to take it to the basket/post up and draw fouls.
3. Work on mid-range jumpers.

I could see Nojel being a big part of everything we do this year. TreW will be the offensive workhorse. EHJ will be a stud. We have young guys coming in. The future looks bright!

He’s already a lock down defender, a hard worker and a good rebounder for a guard. If he put himself in the mindset that every loose ball was his and he was gong to focus on doing all the little things that no one else wants to he could make himself a lot of money for a long period of time. With 15 roster spots, he’s such a good defender that I think he’d be useful both in practice and in special situations, end of quarters/halfs/games, etc, while he continues to work on his offense.

For example: wouldn’t it help Oladipo to go against Nojel in practice every day?

IMO Nojel just needs to play his game ! Yes continue to improve on all aspects of his game . But at the end of the day his game is good enough to take him where he wants to go . Not playing his game is a risk I would advise against . In 60 years as a fan I don't recall a single player with the ability to lock down better than Nojel . The world would benefit more if Nojel was to use his compassion to help others on a larger scale rather than playing basketball IMO . His unselfish values will serve him well in all walks of life . The world needs more men like Nojel .

I would just like to see him focus on rebounding at both ends and also defense. On offense work on his passing and setting picks. Getting the ball into the hands of the guys that can score it. Will be interesting to see what position his playing time will mostly be coming from next year as I don't think we'll see him much at pg. Im hoping morton, thompson and maybe hunter as well can keep that spot locked down.

Come on that’s a very bold statement. You may be correct tho. And with all of the dumb comments that have been made on this board over the years that’s saying a lot. :)

I agree with this. I would guess he gets around 20 mpg and 15 of those will come at the 4 spot.

That's what im hoping. Just hard to tell where he'll fit right now until we can see some of these new players. But as far as PG goes I'm just hoping we get back to guys who are more naturals at the position instead of trying to fit a square peg in a round hole.

Well said and that’s what I tell him. No pressure have fun just play basketball nothing more. He’s seeing things differently today his mind is clear he understands today never take anything for granted now he’s more focused than ever to get back on that court and just play his game why he’s been locked in for 2/3 weeks doing nothing but working 2/3 times in a day on conditioning strength training ball handling form shooting shooting outside when weather is good getting up tons shots to get that muscle memory back he not sitting on his butt crying over what he didn’t do 3 seasons at Purdue he misses basketball a lot was taken from him suddenly that may have awaken him brought him back from his funk he called me told me I’m back mom nothing gonna stop me now I’m gonna work to get my mojo back and since that day several weeks or longer he’s been grinding like I’ve never seen b4. Offensively nojel not challenged nojel lost his confidence in himself and he could not shake it he was going thru a lot and unfortunately especially this season it took a toll on him. Today with time off with nothing to do but think self reflect discover himself again he’s finding that itch passion love and confidence again that he not gonna take nothing for granted ever again. This pandemic open his eyes mind sense of purpose that he found himself again and I’m so happy for him and he gets another opportunity to get back on any court he will make the most of it this time.

If he truly improves his shot during games this next season at Purdue, and shows he can score from mid-range and under the basket, there is zero doubt he will have NBA or other professional opportunities. I hope he does, as it only means good things for Purdue and him.

This is the second time I've seen this comparison to Dennis Rodman. Its ridiculous. Dennis Rodman led the NBA in rebounding 7 times and one year averaged almost 19 rebounds a game. He was 2 time NBA defensive player of the year.

Last year Nojel was 16th among Big Ten guards (46th overall) in rebounding. Pat Spencer form Northwestern (ex Lacrosse Player) and Xavior Simpson averaged more rebounds than Nojel. Nojel has never been selected as Big Ten defensive player of the year let alone been considered for a national award. Nojel averaged 4.9 points a game and 4 rebounds last year.

I'm going to start a thread that says:
Not saying Luce can be John Stockton as a player, but ....
and then we can all discuss its merits.

Everything he has done at Purdue obviously was nothing his impact meant nothing I sure hope the new players and returning players give u everything he could not. It’s amazing the criticism my son gets like he was a failure like he lost all the games by himself but hey can not dispute the numbers but life will go on And nojel will be ok. His future is bright he home he happy nothing else matters but he preparing for his future.

I'm not criticizing your son. I hope he comes back. He's been a good player for Purdue and he'll help next year if he comes back but to compare him to an NBA legend is just silly.

And now we have the biggest over reaction yet. Some of you really seem to hate Nojel and I don't get it. I mean you are treating him like he was an IU player. Let that sink in for a while.
