To me, the quickest way for Purdue to get better performance in the NCAA, is to go out and buy some 22-23 year old perimeter creators out of the portal.

We are just too young/weak at guard and need some power and explosiveness at the 2-3 spots.

Additionally, I really am questioning the recruiting of HS players that can’t contribute right away. If they have to redshirt, go get a 22 year old proven dude out of the portal instead.

But if Edey comes back, anyone coming in will be stuck in that “dump it into the post” offense.

Portal is an important tool that needs to be used. Jenkins was a "good" pickup. We need a "great" pickup this offseason. Smith is a nice player and I like him. I don't want him to be needed 30+ minutes.

Jenkins was all we could afford last year. Hopefully we have a bigger NIL budget this year.

Future tourney success is going to be dependent on recruiting system kids who stay 4 years and develop, elite 1-2 year kids, and portal kids who can contribute immediately.

Be wary of transfer portal, last year Illini got probably the 2 of the biggest transfers in Shannon and Meyer. They are very talented, Shannon is exactly the type athlete Bonefish is saying we need to get. And what did it get them???? Something was off, team chemistry, too much talent, bad coaching, something??

So just going to get the talent, does not always give you the solution.

And Baylor won a national championship two years ago with portal guys.

That’s like Chris Ballard pointing out bad free agent signings from the past as a reason not to sign any big money free agents now.

Pack would have been a nice addition this last year.

He hit 88% of his FTs and he shot 40% on 3s. Of course, we got outbid.

You're right, chemistry is important. But that is true of freshman you recruit out of HS also. I have some concerns with CMP, but I do think he does a good job of getting guys that are good dudes and seem to get along. Just needs to expand that skill to the portal and get quality guys that fit what we need. Provide him the $$ to do that and he think he could be good at it.

Savvy talent that fits with the team concept, helps coach younger players, is a stud in his own right (quickness, scoring, steals, assists ...) doesn't just grow on trees. Pack was a big-money miss. Minnesota was (and still is) a mess during Marcus Carr's years, but with fellow guard Tyrese Hunter is still leading Texas in the Dance, both with nice NILs I'd guess.

I spent time in Krannert, saw Joe Barry Carroll buying frozen yogurt outside. Smart kids coaches like learn business. Don't pay, they'll play elsewhere else.

Jenkins was another serviceable -- (think Boudreaux, Albrecht, Peckk ...) transfer, John Octeus was CMP's best. Rich alums went to Krannert too. NIL value nil? Gotta sell them.
