Caleb was the heart and soul of this team during the regular season and is an all time Boiler great, but even if he leaves after this game, I'm not sure that we're not a better tourney team this year than last. Assuming Caleb and Spike are the only losses, I think that we can expect a big jump in play from CE, a smaller jump from everyone else, VE and IH become the go to guys and good athleticism coming in. I don't know that we win another regular season championship without the weekly productivity of Biggie, but I think the team is more dangerous come tournament time.

Who knows, too early to tell. We definitely didn't have the athletes to compete with KU this year, and I don't think that changes next year. Hopefully in time but they are just on a different level

We are not better without biggie.. end of discussion

Quit being babies. This team just lost to one of the most athletic teams in the country on a night where after the first ten minutes KU played one of their best games of the year and our guys didn't play particularly well. Go ahead and mope if you want, it's certainly your right, but CE will be a stud next year, Vince is ready to be the focal point of the offense and IH will continue to improve.

Biggie is fantastic, but you can't tell me that the way he played tonight that we would have lost by more without him. I'd actually love to see him take from this game that he'd benefit by dropping another 5% body fat, continuing to improve his athleticism and overall game and coming back for one more year.

Not as good next year. Finish 3rd or 4th in the league, 6 seed, lose in the 2nd round.

Will be somewhat of a rebuilding year the following year.

I can see what you mean, but it's too early to tell. People keep saying how "big" Purdue is when they really aren't. Next year we will be much bigger and hopefully more athletic. Will that translate to a more tournament success? I don't know, but Kansas is showing why long, athletic wing players are a necessity once you get to the Sweet 16.
Carsen should be better next year, PJ played pretty well this year outside of some missed free throws, Vince had a good second half of the year, Dakota did Dakota things (which is a compliment), and Haas will hopefully learn to keep the ball high during the off season. I'm optimistic about the team being just as good at shooting, but better on defense with Ewing at PF.

No, because we still have an unathletic back court. Unless there is a JUCO/Willie Deane transfer, I think 3rd/4th in Big Ten and 5-7 seed in NCAA

should have been better prepared .... another "Pain"ter type games, ugh. Better than Crean, but by how much?
The team was as prepared as they could have been. This has everything to do with the talent that Kansas has, plus they played one of their best games. Grow some testicles and man up Ben. We got beat by a better team. Maybe it is not the time to whine.

I didn't know Biggie would be as good as he has been this year and losing him is going to hurt, but I'm not going to pretend I know how good we could be next year. For sure we will have more bodies to throw out there and some of them are superior athletes. Could be better could be worse, but should still get to the tourney and have a shot at doing something.

This thread is why I skip this board after losses.

We lose one meaningful player.

We gain a fantastic recruiting class plus Taylor. Do 5 really good players equal Biggie? You decide. I know my answer. I think we are a Top 12 team next year.

I, too, think Purdue will be better than a lot of people think next year. The senior class will be very solid, and there will be two young athletic guards in Carsen and Nojel.

They won't start the season on the top-15, but they might finish there.

"Fantastic"? That's a bit strong.

No. Unless IH makes some huge improvements in handling the ball. CE will improve; VE, DM, RC, PJ, I don't see having that much room for improvement. Will be surprised if freshmen can add that much. To me VE, DM, and CE will have to bring it night in and night out.

The team had a nice season this year no doubt. But is our fantastic 17 class rated in anyone's top 30? Other teams will add talented players, and as someone mentioned in another thread, we will continue to play boiler dino ball.

We get more balanced next year I think because we won't have one player to focus on but many that can have 20 point nights on any given night. Plus let's not forget we are adding some very good athleticism that MIGHT be of the instant impact level like Carsen was.

Plus let's also keep in mind that we heard similar things on here last season after AJH left on how we won't be as good, etc........ and we most certainly finished better than last season. I'm anxious to see how things turn out next year after an offseason of hard work for some players and the addition of others.

I turn the game off with seven minutes to go because I can't stand watching bad basketball where players look like they don't want to be there. Well Biggie Will be missed next year I don't think he will be missed as much as people think. We saw it too many times this year were players were expecting him to work miracles.
At times it seems like some of the guys were just waiting for him to do something and with that type of pressure to perform for the "NBA scouts" rather than for the good of winning and getting other players involved I think we now see what happens. most teams with a "star player" who is hell-bent on getting himself noticed at the next level really works out for teams.
Sure we want a whole bunch of games because of his presence, but there was always, always the problem looming in the background of "how many turnovers will he have today that will cost us the game?"

The other thing that drove me nuts throughout the season was watching him take his frustrations out following a CMP benching to give him some much-needed rest and then he comes back into the game demands the basketball three straight times down the court and doesn't produce because he's playing the game with anger and frustration right when he gets back in the game. I won't miss that

You also hated the Carsen signing.
No I didn't. I questioned why we only signed 1 player in that class. Would have been nice to have another freshman contributor on this years team.

I would call the 2007 and 1984 classes "fantastic". This class has several projects in it, though a couple with big upsides. I would call it "solid".

The reality is, we all hope this 2017 class outperforms its ranking, but the jury is still out on it.

I am still bullish on the long term prospects of the program, but CMP needs to recruit more length and athleticism, and I think he has started to do that in 2017. Needs to continue that with 2018 class. Big summer coming up.

What? We lose "one meaningful player"???? Did you watch Purdue play at all this year? Biggie is the team. Yes, we have some guys that can shoot, but without Biggie drawing double teams, no one will be sagging off our shooters next year. Also, not sure if you noticed but Haas did virtually all of his damage because Biggie was feeding him. He won't make up for Biggie, and in fact his numbers may go down.

He was a NPOY candidate (Mason definitely should win now) and far and away the B1G player of the year. Don't act like losing him isn't a huge deal. He's the best Purdue player since Big Dog 23 years ago.

Virtually the exact same thing was said last year when AJH left. We're going to be a much different team next year and whether it will be better or worse remains to be seen.

Athleticism is rising but they will be freshmen and not the number 1 in the country type. I see another good season but unless we catch a break and the one seed falters before us I doubt we get any further.

Not sure next year's team will be any better, but there is some precedent for the "better tournament team" scenario. See the transition from the 2010-11 season to the 2011-12 season. We got thumped by VCU in the tourney, lost JJ and Etwaun (a bigger combined loss than losing Biggie). The following year, Hummel and a bunch of role players made it back to the tourney and took a very good Kansas team to the brink in the second round. It was just a better matchup for us than VCU or this year's Kansas team. Next year's roster has way more potential than the 2011-12 team. I could see a return to the Sweet 16, but would probably need a good matchup scenario to advance any farther.

No. The freshmen next year are better athletes but they don't have big game experience. HS big game experience doesnt really mean a ton.

We should actually get much, much faster next year. That pace is going to matter, because it mattered over the past two weeks. We got gassed by three games over eight days in which the top priority for the other team was to push the tempo.

I turn the game off with seven minutes to go because I can't stand watching bad basketball where players look like they don't want to be there.

Did we watch the same game? We looked GASSED in the second half, not disinterested. Biggie had arguably his most emotional game of the season last night after getting roughed up for 20 minutes.

Well, we can't get any slower unless you suit me up! And I know after that Vermont game I had my fears that the pace the ultra athletic catamounts play at would come back to bite us in the sweet 16 (jk)

OP is on point... maybe not a better overall team next year... but I could certainly see a deep tourney run....

I may get railed for this, but I have thought Vince is more important than swanigan... not better, but more important in a motion offense
