My Weekly CBB Top 25

It's obvious that the correct answer includes:
1) Auburn
2) Alabama
3) Marquette
4) Texas A&M
5) Ole Miss
Maybe Yale will go on a tear for the rest of the year.

On a serious note, the SEC looks really really good. Will be interesting to see how the conference schedule shakes out for teams. Big Ten looking like maybe a 9 bid league with a lot of middle to low seeded teams. SEC looks like a 14 bid league(if it ended today). Some teams gotta lose so it'll move closer to a 10 bid league.

Big Ten is 8-10 vs the SEC. Oregon, Ohio St. and Purdue has 2 wins each. Illinois beat a so so Arkansas and Indiana beat lowly South Carolina at home. Illinois, Michigan, Rutgers, Purdue and Ohio St have 2 losses apiece.

Yup. And overall as a conference, the SEC has just 22 losses. The Big Ten has 53 losses. Big 12 isn't close either and the ACC is awful. Big 12 at 47 losses and the ACC at 75. Big East a 48 with just 11 teams.

I’ve only watched a few patches of Michigan State games. Do you think they’re legitimately top 15 good? I don’t disagree with your ranking, they deserve to be there, just curious as to whether you think they’re likely to stay there over the long haul.

The way they are playing right now? I think so. Outside shooting has been their bugaboo the past few seasons. For now, that seems to be trending in the right direction. Couple that with Fears growing into a solid and consistent floor general as a sophomore, and Carr has really taken off recently (both literally and figuratively 😂)

Michigan really needs to be in the top25. Not a believer in either Utah State or San Diego St. West Virginia too high.

I had the same thought regarding SDSU. Nice win versus Houston at home, not sure they have much beyond that. Given that he has Houston outside of his top 25 I’m not sure how he has SDSU in and Gonzaga out.

I just looked up big ten three point shooting, is it accurate that MSU is last in the conference?

Gonzaga has dropped 4 games now. To good teams, but you're not gonna convince me you belong in the Top 25 as of right now at 8-4. Same goes for Purdue. Do I believe Gonzaga, Purdue or even Houston are Top 25 type teams? Absolutely. They just have to win their way back in. SDSU is a pretty good team. I don't think there is a wrong choice at 25 between SDSU, Michigan, Illinois, Houston, Gonzaga and others. It's a pretty tight area when you're sitting around there. Makes for a fun year.

Agree that it’s probably splitting hairs. I just don’t see how you put a three loss SDSU team in if you’re excluding the four loss Gonzaga team that beat them.

So because a team loses to another, they should automatically be behind them? I mean if SDSU loses a game this week, which is possible as they play at Boise State, then they'll drop. Or if someone behind is just much more impressive. Like if Illinois were to win at Oregon for example.

Is that really what you took from that exchange?

You stated that you can’t include Gonzaga because they have four losses. Fine. I completely disagree but you can rank however you want. What I don’t understand is how you then include SDSU with three losses when Gonzaga is objectively better than SDSU by every measure in addition to beating them head to head.

"Objectively." Gonzaga just hasn't been very impressive to me. Not that SDSU has been super impressive. Gonzaga has wins over SDSU, Baylor(who I don't care for this year), Arizona State and Indiana. Then have 8 wins over bad teams who are Q3 and worse. SDSU has wins over Houston, Boise State on the road, UC San Diego and Creighton(who I don't really like this year. So yea, Gonzaga has the head to head but I don't consider that the end all be all when I feel I'm splitting hairs. Gonzaga continues to beat the crap out of that poop conference and they'll find their way back.

Lmao.

What’s your reasoning for Ole Miss in top 25? They have exactly the same amount of top 25 wins as IU football and lost to the only ranked teams they have played.

Yeah, that's definitely not objective, which is my point.

In fairness to him, he's been pretty clear in saying that he doesn't really buy into metrics or strength of schedule.
It isn't that I don't buy into them, they just aren't the end all, be all for me. I don't really care to use efficiency numbers in my rankings. I'll reference NET a tiny bit. But even then, I'll use what I feel I need to. I'm not really sure what has been difficult to grasp here. I have my opinion on teams and how good they are but I also move teams up and down according to everyone else. I do the same thing every other AP voter does. Place teams according to where I feel they should be. Where I took out UConn and Houston for losing, the AP kept in. I also give more leeway to smaller conference teams like a Drake(who is now out) or a UC San Diego. Indiana State got in last year. James Madison last year as well. I have zero biases against any team while ranking. And sometimes I miss a team🤷

Because I felt like they should be there. Just beat Georgia who I had 21st.

Ole Miss beat Georgia at home, Purdue beat Ole Miss on a neutral court! Oregon has two home losses, one by 32 and yet they are 13th? Illinois lost to Alabama by 13 and yet Purdue beat Alabama by 9? Illinois lost to Northwestern by 4 and Purdue rolled NW? But no Purdue, even Michigan and UCLA who both have Quad 2 losses make your top 25? And Vanderbilt who has played the 341st rated schedule made your poll, of course they got 1 vote in the AP. Whats the only team in college ball that has played 4 top ten teams, Purdue, sure they lost to Auburn and Marquette by 18(road) and Texas A&M by 4, but they did beat Alabama by 9 and OLE Miss. But Oregon can get drilled at home and stay in the top 15?????? West Virginia makes your top 10, lost by 24 to Pitt, and 9 to a bad Louisville team? Your throwing darts and your really bad it!

Yes. He posts this for what they call “rage bait”

Wait, serious question, are you actually an AP voter?
No. I'm not actually sure who all the AP Voters are. There are quite a few though. It's a better pill than the coaches poll. I've tried to get people in the past when I had a bigger site and multiple writers to send in a Top 25 but none of them would🤷 but for now, it's all just me. It's much harder to find people that pay attention and can do a Top 25 than you'd realize. It something that takes a few hours every week to do.

Are you really trying to say Purdue deserves a spot? Personally, I don't think so. Yes they have the good wins but they got blasted by Marquette on the road, blasted by Penn State on the road and extra blasted by Auburn and had a close one with Texas A&M. Will Purdue find their way back? Yea probably but so will Gonzaga. They just aren't there right now.

Why is Oregon above Illinois?

Why is Oregon above Illinois?
I felt like a 6 spot drop was enough for Oregon. They actually have a pretty good resume. One of the better ones in the country. Illinois I raised from not ranked to 17th. Which is a pretty significant jump. I was t going to move Illinois to 12th from unranked and I wasn't going to move Oregon down 11 spots to 17th.

All in all, doesn't mean much. I don't see a massive difference between I have ranked 10 through some of the unranked. There are several teams you could flip flop here and there and in different orders and I wouldn't bat an eye or disagree. But I would definitely check out Oregon's resume. Illinois has a good one as well with wins over Arkansas, Wisconsin, Missouri and Oregon. Washington isn't great but decent. Losses to Alabama and Tennessee as well as Northwestern. Oregon has wins at Oregon St, Texas A&M, Alabama, San Diego State and Maryland. Losses to Illinois of course and buzzer beater to UCLA.

List of voters below. Agree that doing it well would take time and effort and that the AP poll is likely better than the coaches poll, although neither means much at this point.

It's good for perception. That number next to a teams name during a game means something. I've never cared for the coaches poll. It's really just some low level assistants likely but it has a name attached to the vote. I probably put 3-4 hours on a Sunday night/Monday morning going through games and everything.

AP Purdue #20, Coachs Poll Purdue #19! BLANK (IU) Shot Poopcast #0!
Note: In his first poll of the year he had IU in the top 15 in the country! Thats all you need to know!

Actually I had Indiana 20th in the preseason poll. A few spots lower than the AP had.

This poll is strictly for clickbait - and it’s pretty bad - Oregon ahead of Illinois is just plain awful
