Walker was the only Sparten to show up tonight.
I don't know whether MP will be able to figure out how to play them but Purdue is absolutely 10 deep and Brian Waddell is no slouch at the 11th spot.I'm curious how deep MSU will actually be. Tonight may be a fluke game where they shake off some rust. But, I'm not sure they are as deep as originally thought. Purdue, on the other hand, could be a legit 9-10 deep.
I'm not declaring victory after one night, I still think this MSU squad will be tough, but I posted all off season that they were 6-11 in Quad 1 games last season, lost an important and efficient piece in Hauser and their highly ranked freshmen class is either developmental (Booker) or stuck behind upper classmen (guards). I think they're a good team but just don't see them as top five nationally.I didn’t see them being that much better than last year IMO. Seems my thoughts could be right!
And THAT, friends and neighbors, may be the problem.an Izzo-coached team
Hey are you no longer going to be starting game threads on the free board?Didn't see this one coming, but Michigan State showed what happens when you can't make shots in a competitive game - didn't help themselves from the FT line either. Walker is damn tough, but obviously they need some balance. They have the pieces - sometimes you have nights like these. Not sure you can extrapolate too much from this, nor with how good Purdue looked either, but I did like the energy and execution tonight from the Boilers. I would never count out an Izzo-coached team with this kind of talent.....but definitely a slight body blow for the Spartans. They will still be right there if I had to hasten to wager.
Illinois looks like they can really be a challenge, Fighter of the Nightman. Maryland is going to be tough too, IMO. Long way.......Long long way to go.....but a very interesting opening night.

Agreed. While I'm glad to see Sparty go down so early, I wouldn't get too excited yet. We know what it is like when your shots won't go down and they had a historically bad night last night. Now if that becomes a trend and they really do turn out to be a bad shooting team even from the FT line, then others could be right and MSU could have a very long year. I'm just not too sure yet.Poor shooting makes any team look bad. After all the goal in basketball is to put the ball in the basket! Doesn't matter how athletic you are, how good of handles you have, or what kind of schemes you run, if you can't shoot, you're not going to be a good basketball team. MSU lost in overtime going 1-20 from 3. Shoot even 30% from 3 and they win by 15 points.
I have NO interest in being DeFacto - UGH!I thought Kyle was taking that over, going back to mid last season. However, we ended up with a de facto one last evening. Time and health permitting, I'm happy to start them for this season - or until the board kicks me out as the inevitable jinx.
Morehead State coming up on Friday evening.....think it's also the last of the BTN+ games.....will work on a write-up for that one.
Boiler Up my friends.

I looked him up. Can’t believe he was a 3 star outta HS. (Walker)Listened to Izzo post game… he mentioned how bad they played and said Cohen Carr was the only one that played well. He said a couple of times that Tyson Walker didn’t play well..? Not sure if I’d agree with that 🤷🏼♂️.
Great night for me. Boilers win, Sparty goes down, and Chargers winI looked him up. Can’t believe he was a 3 star outta HS. (Walker)
At the start of the 2nd half, Izzo had words for Sissoko. Monty mouthed back at which point Izzo walked back to his chair and says to one of his assistants...."Kid is an F@#ing A-hole". I think they might have some issues.Listened to Izzo post game… he mentioned how bad they played and said Cohen Carr was the only one that played well. They're not going to have much of a season if Walker has to play 90+% of the minutes every game.Listened to Izzo post game… he mentioned how bad they played and said Cohen Carr was the only one that played well. I still think MSU will be good, but I think that there is a pretty significant gap between Purdue and MSU at the moment. They’ll improve for sure, but I’m not sure that they are the Big Ten opponent that concerns me most at this point.
Thanks! I need an organized game thread in my life and appears that the Gold and black staff wont be providing.I thought Kyle was taking that over, going back to mid last season. Agree with all except the gap. Goes one of two ways. Illinois, Whisky will be fine perhaps right there. Illinois very good. DGL good addition. While I have them 3rd, my Dad has them winning B10....which I laugh at. But in truth, he's right, more than wrong. We will see. Wouldn't be surprised if both don't beat Purdue @ their home court, assuming we go there.....
If not stacked crowded at top, the other way it could go for Purdue.......They play D like most of last night AND hit three's....might be gap at top with Purdue alone @ +3 or something like last year. But we will see if Purdue's 3 & D still there by months end???

I really thought we'd win the B1G this year but with a tougher schedule, I thought we might loose a few more games. After watching Michigan, Michigan State and Indiana this week, I'm starting to think I may be wrong.Purdue plays Michigan State just once @ Purdue, late in the regular season. Then they play the return game @ Illinois following. The Illini come to Mackey Arena January 5.
Purdue's home/away double plays this year:
Illinois, Indiana, Northwestern, Michigan, Rutgers, Wisconsin, and of course - IOWA!
Single plays:
Michigan State, @ Maryland, @ Nebraska, @ Ohio State, Minnesota, and Penn State
I feel like the current environment where everyone is competing for playing time may be ideal for achieving that result. Colvin is in a challenging spot as a true freshman where he has to learn the Purdue offense and defense. In this environment, he is being told exactly what he needs to work on to earn more minutes which should be a great motivator to focus on the little things that will make him a player that Painter can trust in March.I really thought we'd win the B1G this year but with a tougher schedule, I thought we might loose a few more games. We may be only marginally better than last year but the B1G is no better as a conference. Purdue can play any combination of their scholarship players and still be head and shoulders above anyone else in the B1G. Does anyone really think that starting either TKR, Gillis or Furst at the 4 or Jones, Colvin or Heide at the 3, will make a difference in the B1G race? Painter's lone focus should be finding the best rotation for March.
Fans remember the 2018-2019 fondly. That team lost 10 games and nobody cared because we won the B1G and made it to the Elite 8. Losing games early forced Painter to make adjustments. My biggest fear with this team is that Painter settles on a rotation that wins consistently (and they will) that isn't the team best built for March. We saw that last year. Why make changes when you you're 21-1? Then when things went a little off course, we didn't have any answers, especially at the three.
Love this post. I keep thinking that Trevion and Jaden might have been more disciplined -I feel like the current environment where everyone is competing for playing time may be ideal for achieving that result. Some coaches win by keeping things very simple and throwing out their young stars to play through their mistakes. Painter demands a lot more than that. It is frustrating because we all want the most talented players to be on the court, but I really believe that in the end the system will be a large part of what allows Purdue to compete with more talented rosters when it all comes together. I do think that Colvin is going to have a place in the rotation in March, but he is going to earn that role by playing in the system and earning Painter’s trust.
After 1 game, yes Purdue looks to be above the others, but let’s pump the brakes a bit. It’s one game and let’s just hope we aren’t playing our best ball right now and then everyone catches up in 2024. I don’t mind if we lose the B1G…I want to see that we are playing our best ball in mid Feb and continue into March.I really thought we'd win the B1G this year but with a tougher schedule, I thought we might loose a few more games. Sparty brought back almost everyone from last year…I think they were just flat in their first game…they’ll be alright and will be ready when they come to Mackey. I would assume IU figures it out, right? If they don’t, they’re in for a long season. But it’s 1 game. We should know better in a month where the conference is at.First of all, Samford is a good team (not D1 great by any means), a bad match-up to us for them. Second, we were hitting our 3-point shots and made them continuously through the game. No reason to get overly excited but we did look good. We need to bottle some of that good shooting and re-open that at the end of the season.
I do think that some of the perennial BIG powers have not looked good in their opening games. Indiana looked completely lost on offense, and did a lot of NBA style one-on-one plays. The refs also saved IU by calling a bunch of ticky-tack fouls on their opponent. MSU seemed to be a one man show, while everyone else took the night off. Michigan was better, but played against an unimpressive foe. It might just be that Purdue has brought back most of last year's team so they are miles ahead on the offensive plays than the other teams.
