MSU #31 on ESPN's RPI ranking

If we switched resumes with Michigan State, where do you think each would be ranked?

A couple points:
(1) RPI is RPI. There is no such thing as ESPN RPI. It's a single formula that various outlets, such as ESPN, have a copy of. ESPN does their own formula BPI, which is their version of a predictive metric.
(2) MSU (and the rest of the Big Ten) being so low is bad news for us. We have a giant glass ceiling on our RPI based on the remaining schedule even if we win, win, win. Recall teams rising in RPI just by losing to a top 10 RPI team and teams falling in RPI by beating a low RPI team. Hopefully this is indeed the year the committee decides to study the other metrics on the team data sheet.

With MSU being discussed as a 1 seed and perhaps the #1 team in the country, add in our wins vs top 50, and with a possible win against said #1 team on the road, and that puts us in a nice spot for seeding. I am not sure that the B1G being down is that much of a hindrance. It’s likely one team from the B1G will still get a 1 seed and if not, a 2. That’s an opportunity and I am sure the team recognizes and I hope they take advantage.

I think the bigger point he was making is that we have far more opportunities the balance of year to have a really bad loss that will hit RPI hard than we do having a strong win. The B1G being down is a HUGE hindrance on RPI. But RPI is supposedly not as impactful this year for seeding. My mantra remains the same...just win baby.

One of the determining components to RPI is AP and Coaches poling.
Thus this reminds me of the selection of Indiana Mr. BB. Some years it's the best player on the best team, some years it's the best player stat wise, some years it's the best player on the team that goes further in the IHSAA tournament, some years it's the best player on the team that goes further in the IHSAA tournament from the highest class and finally some years it's a combination of basketball skills and community service. The above criteria is selected based on college choice. The above criteria is heavily weighted to IU recruits.

The RPI formula uses winning percentage, opponent winning percentage, and opponent opponent winning percentage. Those are the only inputs.
