There has been rumors of Monteroso announcing soon that he would transfer to play basketball. Is that true?

He has good size for WR. He has made nice plays in camps. However, he has been injured quite a bit which has held him back.

Yes, I tweeted it a bit ago that he confirmed via text he won't be returning for his senior season. He would not elaborate beyond that, though, in regards to where or if basketball has anything to do with it. Or at least he hasn't yet via text.

Another disappointing transfer that again reflects poorly on entire FB program and coaching staff. Our highest ranked recruit in 2013 class with 4.5 speed and excellent size and could barely reach 2 deeps after 3 yrs in program. I would be discouraged as well at getting limited playing time considering the "spatula hands" guys playing ahead of him. Matt Painter should at least call him . My understanding was he was a solid 3* shooting guard at St Clairsville OH HS. Not sure we have an available scholly but he'd likely see more PT than Haz thought he deserved?

Who would you have played him over?

Also, why would he walk on the bball team when he claims he has schollies elsewhere?

Some revisionist history here. Do you not remember the Nebraska game in 2014? Appleby had a pretty good game and I think our WR corps had double digit drops.....most of those drops were Monteroso. He had a beyond tough game that day. It wasn't Appleby's fault.....that's for sure.

I think it reflects poorly on our ability to develop WRs....but I don't think the kid was that football talented anyways. I think he played football because most of his BBall offers were low D1.

He had major offers out of high school for football. Iowa and BC offered him and he committed to BC then flipped when Jim Bollman was briefly here.

I think your comment about developing WRs was dead on. Sherman was not a good hire and im iffy on Parker.

Yeah -I've never gotten the hype on Parker. Recruiting coordinator and WR coach, and our recruiting and our WRs suck.

Let's not limit the conversation to WR. The staff sucks at developing players at every position. Everyone raved about the experienced OL. They were every bit as bad as upperclassmen as when they walked in the door. We are just going to have to sit back and ride this out. First a new AD and then new football coach. Hazell is dead man walking and too deep into his tenure to keep blaming assistants and players he inherited. Don't really blame players for bailing if they have an opportunity.

Parker has only been WR coach one year right? I thought the worse hire was the WR coach from VT. The Hokies have never been any good on offense ever.

I am not inclined to "call out" and name 19-20 yr old college kids who show up to practice, work hard and try to represent their team/school as best they can. However, I do not hold that same view as to overpaid, incompentant coaches (Hazell,Shoop, Sherman) who have not demonstrated any ability to evaluate/recruit talent nor develop offensive playmakers for 4 seasons. We are thin at WR-it is not a strength going into the fall.

I dont know Monteroso or his family but review of 2015/2016 spring depth chart did not show him in 2 deeps. Instead there were a couple California JC recruits & a converteted QB playing ahead of him with non-existant or limited experience going back to HS. Of course , Im sure that they were recruited based on their "potential & upside".

I would submit that spending time/effort/money recruiting the state of California for any sport other than womans softball or swimming/diving is wastefull unless you are ND, OSU, NW or MI. We dont need to fill out our roster with the rejects Boisie St, Utah, Utah St or AZ picked over first.

Other than Hedlen, I can only recall 2-3 guys we recruited out of CA that ever contributed much. Stan Brown (KR/WR) 1970, James Looney (LB) 1979, Randall Lane (WR) 1998-Its "Culture Shock" for guys coming to W Lafayette now a days.- Concentrate on recruit/play/develop proven midwest talent. augmented with TX, GA, FL athletes.

Those guys were recruited becausevmonteroso didn't develop.

As for CA, that's where a lot of jucos are that is why we recruited there. If you want to bitch about jucos, I'll agree. Also, you're ignoring Dwight mcclean, Terrell Vinson, Jaycen Taylor among others

I posted about this in another thread and compared Purdue's staff payout versus other overall staff payouts in the B1G. I'll go back and compare to other programs in other conferences to compare a bit more...but it becomes very clear why the stuff struggles when compared to others, in terms of salary

I can still remember stopping at a frozen custard shop(I think its gone now) on Stadium Av across from McDonalds and standing in line was aspiring hiphop artist Brandon Hance from LA w/ a couple team mates, wearing baggy jeans, gold chains, earring and sideways ballcap. I thought to myself "what would Lenny Dawson say if he saw this spectacle"....our field general.... I guess I am old fashioned & certainly not accusing all Cali kids are freaky but Hance was a different kind of cat, I think?

So you're judging all players from California by your encounter with a kid who transferred to major in design

Awesome

wasn't Steve Bryant from Cali?

His comments pretty much sums it up:

Purdue has posted a 6-30 record the last three seasons, which is a far cry from what Monteroso was accustomed to during his athletic career.

"The losing really gets to you mentally," Monteroso said. "It sucks and there's no other word for it."

"During the recruiting process, when I was in high school, I was young and dumb......."

Where were those quotes from?

Yes, everyone knows that baggy jeans means you're not a good leader.

This doesn't reek of anti-California as much as it is ethnocentric.

Maybe this "old fashioned" thinking is one reason it's tough to get the best athletes to come to WL.

Dan wasn't very good IMO he seemed to have Come Fleener hands. He had oppurtunities just never really displayed anything great. The one reciever who I have been wanting to see for a couple years now is Bilal Marshall.

Yes on both accounts. Dan got plenty of shots but just wasn't that great at catching the ball. It's not like he's transferring to play football somewhere.....it's clearly not his thing.

I too want to see what Marshall can do. No clue why he didn't get more PT over the JUCOs and Phillips last year.

Injured in camp and never got another chance.

I found the source on this. The recruiting quote is being used out of context. The way i read it was he eliminated smallers schools because of the P5 offers.

The story seems to say that Haz actually thought he had improved this spring to the point where he would have been allowed to contribute and see more pt. To say he did not develop while on campus is not correct. He obviously demonstrated an ability to stretch the field and go up over smaller DB's to make catches ie; (ISU game) spring ball. It sounds to me that he was deceived in recruiting process. This kids a class act. How maney guys would sit down w/Haz and tell him to his face that he was considering leaving? I hope the best for him. PU needs more selfless team players like Monteroso and coaches should have rewarded him accordingly.

ISU hail mary is not evidence he could stretch the field.

Also, im not sure how he was deceived. He was given every opportunity to play or start his first two years.

If Yancey or Posey go down we are in trouble. Its becoming a lack of depth issue at OL, DL, WR. Just like LB position was last yr.

Agree on depth concerns. Hopefully the cross training that Parker does between WR positions works out. I think Monteroso was Posey's backup IIRC. Maybe Wegher will get snaps now.

OL & DL are real concerns. There are no backups on the Ol with game experience and Cermin is coming off surgery. No bueno.

Sorry....slightly off topic...saw Shoop's name and was just wondering if he got hired anywhere???? Anyone know what he is doing???

I can think of football hire that was much, much worse.....
