Matt Haarms

I hope to see Spike back soon and Haarms playing this season. Depth is important.

What is the situation with Haarmes again? Is he burning his red shirt by enrolling early, or not even that?

If Haarms plays this season, it will mean something really bad happened to Haas or Swanigan. Painter has no intent to do so.
I'm not convinced that if "something really bad" happened he would play. The kid came to Purdue due to the development and use of size at Purdue. He offers some skills, but wasting a year for a few minutes..."IF" he were to beat out Taylor in Jan or Feb does not help his development. Reaching his potential...which is what he wants will take some time. I like what he can do, but we saw last night how physical inside it can be and although he has a stroke outside...so do a few others right now at Purdue.
Biggie works his a$$ off and made a huge improvment from last year...and last year he was a more complete player than Haarms I'm sure. I like the kid, but would probably have a heart attack if Matt used him at all this year.

Isn't JT likely out for the year now? Not sure it changes the calculus on Haarms playing, but you never know.

Has four years of eligibility left with no redshirt if I understand correctly.
Assuming he sits the upcoming 2nd semester, I believe he would then have 4 years to play 4 years.

If he plays this season, then he would have 4 to play 3.

But I could be completely wrong about all of this.

From everything I have heard JT is not playing this year. Haarms is redshirting and is only in school because they found out he would lose this year anyway. It's good for him to be around the team, practicing, and getting used to college life. I don't think he ever thought he would play this year.

Just pretend he enrolled at the beginning of the year and is redshirting like any other freshman would have.

He won't redshirt next year and will play 4 years straight.

Saw him in person, and couldn't help but think he has a very similar look to Haas. Kid can really utilize this time with the team to put on some productive weight/strength and gain experience. They are two totally different players with different games, but Haarms looks like he could pass as his skinny brother.

So when does his redshirt end? Is he eligible at the start of next season, or does he have to wait a calendar year (redshirt year?) and begin playing in January or so? I've never seen anything like this before.

not sure...that has been really quiet. I think they see how he heals and goes from there to see what options seem best for both sides I'm sure

It is a bit unique but not unheard of for foreign players. Here is what happened/happening:

The NCAA ruled that because of the time that had elapsed since his completion of 8 semesters of high school, his college clock started ticking this season. So instead of spending the year at Sunrise Academy he enrolled at PU at the semester and will RS the rest of this season. He will then have the next 4 years to complete his eligibility.

There is no such thing as a "semester RS" so he is using his RS year this season. This allows him to practice and be part of the team instead of being in "High school" for another year. If he were to play any this season then that would count as a season played and he would then only have 3 years of eligibility left plus a RS year. That is extremely unlikely obviously because he would be giving up a whole year just to play in a few minutes of game action.

I know there have been a couple of people that have been "pushing" for the possibility of him playing this year. That isn't why he is here and very unlikely to happen. He is only here because the NCAA basically said either spend a year at prep school or at PU, but either way it counts as a year used.

I don't think Haarms will play this year, but this has happened before. I think Frank Kendrick became eligible mid year, and joined the team in time to help them win an NIT championship, IIRC.

My impression has always been that a player's eligibility clock is triggered by enrollment in college and not any certain age or completion of high school. That's why sometimes you will see a freshman in their mid twenties because he went and did something else in between high school and college. I believe I remember Oakland has such a player this year from watching when they played MSU last week.

Now what did Haarms do to start his eligibility ticking already?

The only way CMP would play him this year would be if he thought he would leave early to play pro ball.

Don't know why people can't figure this out still.

This entire year is counting as a redshirt year. Next year he will be a redshirt freshman and play 4 straight years(unless he left early obviously).

He had to enroll since if he went to prepschool this year it would have taken a year of eligibility and only had 4 years to play 3. So instead of wasting it in HS, he is enrolling and using it as a redshirt (5 years to play 4).

Just ignore that he is enrolled midyear and pretend he enrolled beginning of year. Same thing is occurring either way.

This still doesn't answer WHY his eligibility started this year.

To keep things simple, the NCAA thinks in terms of sports seasons, not school years. Obviously, they generally coincide, but at times like this, they don't. A resdshirt in any sport is for that season, regardless of the school year. As far as scholarships go, the scholarship begins the day the student athlete attends any school activity. They then have 5 years from that date to play four seasons of the sport.

Consider that football players who enroll early don't risk not playing in a bowl during their last season as the football season (including bowl game) is over before they enroll early, they don't lose that season or need to redshirt.

Because Haarms had surpassed one year since the end of his eight high school semesters, the NCAA ruled that the clock had already started on his college eligibility and they ruled that Haarms would have lost a season of competition had he stayed at Sunrise.

yes - if he had not enrolled in a school, it would be looked at differently.

So....

You can take 1 year after high school and go to a prep school if you want and your eligibility doesn't start. But it starts after one year after high school if you do enroll in a prep school?

AND if you just go get a job at a gas station after high school your eligibility doesn't start? Just if you enroll in some sort of school be it a college or a prep school?

They stopped the prep school glitch a couple of years ago. Can't do that anymore. Yes, many playrers at lower levels of D1 have been in the military and are 23 year old freshmen. Not as much now as desert storm days. Troy State had 8 or so freshmen who were over 23 in 1996, or close to that year.

The prep school thing is what drove the Oak Hill/LaLU/ place in FL/place in Las Vegas/et al to become high schools.

Uhh....no, Frank was a senior at the end of an outstanding 3-year career (couldn't play as a freshman then) when the Boilers won the '74 NIT.

Consider that if Ed Schilling had not left Park Tudor to go with Alford to UCLA, then Calipari (who Ed was Asst with for several years) and Alford (who he is assistant with now) would get all the good kids from Indiana who would have probably gone to Park Tudor ... as well as his being Coach of the Adidas National Team and heading kids in those two directions too.

and went on to play for the Warriors in '75, who won the NBA Title led by Rick Barry, the former Keith (now Jamaal) Wilkes, and company.

He is actually eligible now but unless there is disaster Painter will leave the shirt on.
