To whomever I was having a discussion with several days back about why Hazell would be silly - stupid even - to offer to renegotiate his contract this summer in exchange for more years and minimal buyout. Because at the first sign of trouble afterwards, the message by the AD goes from "we believe in you coach and we want you to be here longer than we originally contracted for" to "gtfo... and never show your face around here again."

Technically the buyout figure was only $500k, however they are on the hook for 2 years of his salary + the buyout. $4.7M is not an insubstantial amount. And in the article, Maryland really dogs Edsall didn't provide an exciting offense and more/less says the fans pushed him to make the change.

Edsall will be paid a total of $4.7 million — $2.1 million salary in 2015 and 2016, as well as another $500,000 buyout that was part of the extension he and the school agreed on in June if he didn't coach past next season. Edsall's salary ranked 11th among Big Ten coaches.
