Good Sunday afternoon, ladies and gentleman. It's the second of the two early conference games with the Maryland Terrapins (8-1; 1-0) visiting Mackey Arena to take on the #8-ranked Purdue Boilermakers (7-2; 0-1). It's a noon (Eastern time) tip with television coverage on the Big Ten Network. Maryland is coming off a 83-59 thrashing of Ohio State at home, and Purdue is returning home after getting manhandled at Penn State, 81-70, in a game that wasn't really as close as the score might indicate.
Projected Starting Line-ups:
Maryland - Julian Reese, Derik Queen, Selton Miguel, Ja'Kobi Gillespie, and Rodney Rice
Purdue - Trey Kaufman-Renn, Camden Heide, Myles Colvin, Fletcher Loyer, and Braden Smith
_______________________________________________________________
The Terrapins enter this game well above average in scoring offense as they are 17th with an average of 86.3 points per game. Maryland is 54th in rebounding with 40.1 boards a night and 127th in assists with 15 dimes per contest. Maryland is above average defensively, ranking 10th in scoring defense as it allows 58.7 points a night. Derik Queen leads the team with 16.6 points plus 8.3 rebounds a game this season. Julian Reese (13 points, 8.3 rebounds), Rodney Rice (12.2 points) and Ja’Kobi Gillespie (13.7 points, 3.1 assists) each average in double figures. Selton Miguel, Tafara Gapare, DeShawn Harris-Smith, Jay Young and Malachi Palmer are looked at to contribute for coach Kevin Willard. Maryland shoots 49.5% from the floor as a team this season. The Terrapins are connecting on 8.2 threes per contest while shooting 33.2% from beyond the 3-pt arc. Maryland is above average at the FT line, converting 73.7% of their chances this season.
This is going to be another challenging match-up for Purdue. Purdue is currently 15th in KenPom Ratings (10th offense, 55th defense), and Maryland is 17th overall (38th offense, 6th defense). Maryland is 109th in adjusted tempo - so not as fast a pace as Penn State....but they will still try to speed up Purdue. They have more firepower in the front-court, so could still cause problems in a half-court game.
Maryland also likes to press and can turn teams over, and they also have some size with a talented front-court. Reese is experienced and has been aided with the addition of true freshman Derik Queen. Maryland's only loss is a tight contest to Marquette at home. This will be Maryland's first true road game, and the Boilers could really use the boost from the friendly environment. Purdue will definitely need a much better and focused effort from the team and better production efficiency than what occurred Thursday night at Penn State.
Naturally, Purdue cannot afford to drop to 0-2 with a loss at home - and although this is not an absolute "must win" game, it certainly seems that way for the Boilers' conference championship opportunities. From Matt Painter - "
Our quality of play was so poor the other night we couldn't function." Boilers need to embrace the physicality and meet the energy level and surpass it.
Look for Purdue to play better, but I expect this to be a very competitive game and tough challenge for the Boilers. Can they get things back on track?
We shall see, coming up in less than an hour.....
Boiler up, my friends.
