WEST LAFAYETTE – As part of the Mackey Arena reseating process, Purdue will reconfigure the premium section across from the team benches, including the current group of gold seats.

“We’re going to make more efficient use of that space,” athletic director Mike Bobinski said.

The gold seats will no longer be gold – they’ll be changed to black – and the number will increase from 36 to around 70. The theater-style seating will be slightly wider compared to the current version.

“It’s a huge number but we have intense demand for those seats,” Bobinski said. “They will still be a premium experience.”

The additional seats will generate around $500,000 in annual revenue. The cost of the project is between $600-$650,000.

Bobinski said there are no plans to add more theater-style black seats in different sections of Mackey Arena.

“We looked at different possibilities,” he said. “There isn’t a lot given the geometry and physical structure that we have. You don’t want to change the feel. Mackey works in a lot of ways.

"To fuss with something that’s full to the brim every night seems like a bad idea. I’ve got lots of them but that’s not one I’m going to execute. We want to make adjustments on the fringe, on the margin that makes sense, but we don’t want to change the vibe and feel of what works in a big way.”

Purdue will take a sell-out streak of 41 consecutive games into the 2022-23 season.

The athletic department plans to reseat the facility on a five-year cycle. It was planned for last year but was pushed back due to the pandemic.
