"SOUTHPORT — The word Mt. Vernon head coach Joe Bradburn has used over and over again to describe his team this season is “connected.”

On Saturday, that team connection was on full display.

Four double-digit scorers, great ball movement and an early 28-0 run fueled the Marauders to a 4A regional championship rout.

At Southport High School, the Marauders (21-5) defeated Brownsburg (13-13) 74-40 to secure their spot as one of the final eight teams in 4A. They’ll play in the semistate March 22 at a site to be announced.

“This is incredible. I don’t know how to put this one into words,” Bradburn said. “I have a group of young men that just had a common cause this week, and they banded together. The team word every day is ‘connected,’ and they played that way today.”

Down 9-5 early in the first quarter following a basket by Brownsburg’s Devon Craig, the Marauders reeled off the next 28 points.

A Tyler Davis basket started the run, and a Tanner Teschendorf runout off of a forced turnover evened things at nine.

On the next possession, Luke Ertel found Max Vise for the go-ahead layup, giving Mt. Vernon their first lead of the day.

They never gave the lead back.

Late in the second period, an Aden Daugherty 3-pointer off an assist from Elijah Parra pushed the lead to 31-9. Teschendorf and Ertel free throws capped off the 28-0 run before a Jesiah Sloss free throw on the other end stopped the run.

“All week we focused on a zone because we knew that’s what they were going to throw at us,” Teschendorf said. “Every day we just focused on staying composed, getting the ball to the middle and finding our guys when they’re open.”

A Brandon Addison buzzer-beater trimmed the Brownsburg halftime deficit to 35-12 and was the Bulldogs’ only basket of the quarter. They finished the quarter 1-of-12 from the field.

Out of the break, the Marauders came out just as connected.

Ertel quickly found Teschendorf for an easy layup, and then knocked down a 3-pointer of his own, to push the lead to 41-12.

A 26-point outburst in the period nearly matched the Bulldogs’ team total through three quarters and put the Marauders ahead 61-29 entering the final quarter.

Ertel scored nine of his game-high 19 points in the quarter. Teschendorf had six of his 13, and Vise had four of his 10 points.

Along with those three, Davis had 12 first-half points and finished with 14 to give the Marauders four double-digit scorers.
