Love this headline at Hoosier.com

They have been down so so long any bit of positive info will be inflated as much as possible. Do not get me wrong, they appear to be on paper better than they have been is some time. But I do not think so much better that they finish much higher in the BT. But it is yet to be seen.

I could see them finishing…. 4th at the very best? No way they are better than us, Michigan or Illinois

I hope Mike Woodson turns things around in Bloomington. I think he will be better than their last couple coaches. I like when Purdue and IU are both good. It puts the Purdue/IU basketball rivalry back front and center as the best rivalry in college basketball.

No matter what ESPN likes to promote.....the Keady/Knight battles were the best ever.

Not me. If we beat them 50 times in a row I'll be a happy camper.

from a completely unbiased point of view- has Indiana/Purdue ever truly been the #1 rivalry?

Underrated for entertainment - Keady/Lou "Doo" Henson

Honorable Mention - Keady/Lute Olsen

So technically they're the #2 team in the country?

Is your last name Vitale? Lol.
well I am not 90 years old, I've never coached in the NBA, never had cancer, don't sound like my voice is permanently lost, and don't bring up Robert Montgomery Knight every day of my life. Does that answer your question lol?

Seriously though. I think you'd have to be pretty biased to argue that Duke/UNC has not been the #1 basketball rivalry over the last 30 years.

Depends what you mean by #1. Sure, dook-unc has been the most hyped by dook vitale and espn over 30 years, but keep in mind that unc was a big-time cheater for at least 18 of those years with its fake academic program.

When it comes to a rivalry that is pure, unblemished (excepting the clown pants), and goes back to beginning of college basketball time, Purdue-Indinia is the best.

I don’t disagree, but the intensity of the rivalry with Keady throwing his coat and Knight throwing his chair was unlike anything else I have seen in college basketball. Those were fun times to be college basketball fan in Indiana.

Agree to that

Add to this the apparent money flowing to recruits families at Duke. That one kids parent bought an expensive house right after he committed to Dooke

The only people that don't think the Purdue/iu rivalry was the best during this time, never saw a Purdue/iu game.

Best from our perspective- of course. What I am asking is- do people from the 49 states not called Indiana agree with that assessment? That is what I mean by an unbiased opinion. Would college basketball fans in Carson City, Baton Rouge, Boston, Minneapolis etc say that IU/Purdue was ever the greatest rivalry in basketball? I bet they might say top 5 or top 3… but #1?

The question is inherently biased. You ask other 49 other states you are likely to get 49 different answers.

But clearly the other 49 states would all be wrong. :)

That’s kinda my point. You can find a lot of people in any of the 50 states that would say Duke/UNC has been the best rivalry over the last 30 years- and it’s not because Vitale and Bilas have brainwashed them. It’s a very objective opinion to have.

This is slightly off topic, but one difference that I am seeing between Woodson and Painter is that Woodson seems to be focusing on out of state talent more while Painter seems to really be targeting in state talent (Furst, TKR, Waddell, Loyer, Smith, and Colvin since 21). It will be interesting to see if this trend continues.

Probably has to. Painter has a big edge in state at the current time.

In my unbiased view, our opinions count much more because we are much smarter about college basketball (and most other things) than the fans in those other places.

No they would not. Rivalries are mostly very very regional. only the people involved know how much emotion there is and I'm sure there's a rivalry in every state that rivals our own.

Crean took the same approach...look how it ultimately turned out.

Archie tried to reverse it...and, it still did not turn out well, but, he at least gained some traction in the state and with fans as such.

IU fans won't care where kids are from if they win games, but, there is no doubt that they would prefer that they were from Indiana.

Crean went outside and then came back and tried getting guys in-state...Woodson will likely do the same, if he is able to.

Truth be told, it is far easier for Woodson to sell what he is selling out of state right now than it is in the state...thus the approach.
