Haven't we lost at Northwestern a lot lately? I would guess 5 of the last 7 times or something like that? Does anyone know?

Went and looked this up because people keep talking about how we struggle there and I just don't remember it being that bad. Here's what we've done with Painter as a coach:

2015-2016 - Didn't play there
2014-2015 - Won 68-60

2013-2014 - Lost 63-60 2OT
2012-2013 - Lost 75-60
2011-2013 - Won 58-56
2010-2011 - Didn't play there
2009-2010 - Lost 72-64
2008-2009 - Won 63-61
2007-2008 - Won 71-56
2006-2007 - Won 75-68

2005-2006 - Lost 66-53

Overall 5-4.

In years we were good (bolded as years we made NCAA tournament) we were 5-1 with ironically what most people would consider our best team in that stretch (2010 pre-Hummel injury) being the one loss. In the years we missed the NCAA tournament, we were 0-3.

My analysis is that there isn't any magical hex. Really just one anomaly in the 11 years since Coach Painter has been here. When we've been good, we've won (with one exception) and when we've not been good, we've lost.

Obviously, we're an NCAA tournament team this year but this will be the first time they will be as well so this is kind of new territory.

Wisconsin has had more trouble there than we have.

While I agree with your analysis and conclusion, this is a better, and perhaps the best Wildcat team ever.

I make no claims about what we're going to do there this year. Like I said, this is new territory with them being good this year. I was just trying to show that in the 11 years of CMP we've only lost there one time when we've had a good team and you could probably say that about most Big Ten venues at least once in that period. Northwestern doesn't seem any more ominous than anywhere else.

Carmody's zone flustered us. Even when we won some of those games it wasn't pretty.

Glad Sunday's game is irrelevant

Maybe a better question is other than Mackey what gyms do we win in much more than we lose? Without looking I would guess there aren't too many.

OSU's....we simply struggle there. I know Purdue has had more success in the Kohl Center than any one else in the country. Same could be said for Assembly Hall at Illinois. Purdue, no matter how good Illinois is and how bad Purdue has been...always seems to play well there.

Obviously what happened 5 years ago when 0 of our players were there is meaningless. But I think it's more about the type of team that NW has been. They did the various zones, trapped, backdoor cuts, etc. - something that's just frustrating to play against. They obviously were rather low scoring as well and slowed the pace of games.

I'd imagine many different Big Ten fans have the same perception because of these factors. Even if you walk out with a win, it's often not a fun game to watch.

It's been more about the type of team we've been. When we haven't been NCAA tournament quality, we've lost.

I wonder w/ Iowa winning if the team's sense of urgency will be diminished.
That is my concern as well and still not sure winning at NW matters. I think with how the B1G is viewed as being "down" will impact our seed more than anything at his point.

Barring some teams in front of us falling our seed is pretty much set. Just gotta get to the ncaat with no injuries and then make our run.

I guess my worry now borders on the conspiracy line of thinking, we don't have to win so will the refs now favor NW to help solidify their chances of getting in the Dance.

The National TV exposure should be one in which Biggie might get motivated to go "off" in....and that would be good for the Boilers.....as Biggie plays spectacular 95% of the time without added motivation.

I'm not too worried as long as the Boilers come out and play their game. I wouldn't be surprised to see a close game at the half, even being down a few points....but Purdue's size and interior play should win out. Outside of Pardon, Law, and Benson, they don't have lots of size inside. If Purdue gets NW's bigs in foul trouble, Purdue should be able to wear them down in the second half and lead to big days for Haas, Biggie, and Vince. The key will be with Haas staying out of foul trouble himself and hopefully the refs don't take the bait like they did against IU (not sure I've seen a 7'2 guy end up on the floor and be called for a foul...let alone twice in the same game).

Ya, Wisconsin and MSU have been pretty good on the road over the past decade+, but I don't think any other B1G programs have a winning road record in conference over more than a few seasons at a time.

Purdue is 7-4 @PSU under Painter (18-5 overall); that's probably our best road mark. If memory serves, Purdue is also 4-3 @IU under Painter and 3-5 at the Kohl Center.

Sorry, but this is bologna. Every one of our games is on national TV - to say a player will be extra motivated to go off when on national TV is also a poor reflection of the player (which Swanigan does not come across as that kind of guy). Swanigan has had some off games of late, against not that great of competition (i.e. Penn State). He needs to worry about improving himself, not whether he wants to go off or not for exposure-purposes.

Lost the last 2 and 3 out of last 4 there. It's just difficult to win consistently on the road. Add in what lbodel said about NW style of play forcing you to win ugly. There is no Welsh Ryan curse.

2013-2014, lost in 2 OT, just didn't have enough sauce that game.

Yeah, but we're 24-23 in their current arena. Given they've been pretty solid over that period that's impressive.

Lunardi and them just need to go ahead and make all the teams in the Big Ten a 9 seed or below.. That should give them more time to play with their tinker toys.
Speaking of tinker.. look Tom Tinker and friends!:

Putting things in context, we have the best winning record in the country at Kohl of any time not named Wisconsin...lol!
