That’s great, glad you found this.
An engineer I used to work with found it. I recall reading about the same thing a few times over the years and so we don't really know how much this happens...falling in place to all the other things we didn't know that happened...AND wouldn't have known had Trump not been elected. Think about that...we wouldn't have known a lot had Trump not been elected. You know there was waste, fraud and general corruption for many years...some finding its way back into the pockets of others. I just wonder on the money trail that couldn't be traced due to no identification...how much existed there. Thankfully, DOGE has that fixed for any others in the future that care. Not preventing duplicate soc numbers poses a huge problem as well. That’s great, glad you found this.
For decades, DoD had a problem with military retirees dying but the surviving spouse not reporting it and continuing to draw the pension check via direct deposit. DoD pretty much fixed this about 15 years ago. I get an email from DFAS every month telling me my retirement check has been deposited. If I do not open that email for three months in a row, DFAS begins an investigation. Also, I must change my password for that email every 120 days. If I don't, DFAS begins an investigation. You know there was waste, fraud and general corruption for many years...some finding its way back into the pockets of others.
I assume at least those that are listed over 100 years old would be receiving paper checks if anything. Just cut all soc payments for all over 100 years old and instead in the expected check list the number that must be called and location for verification. That would save a lot of time in trying to stop any fraud. Could probably look at mortality table and cut that down to 95 or 90 years old. Those 90+ that are alive are either under the care of others or still able to function on their own and so that shouldn't be a problemFor decades, DoD had a problem with military retirees dying but the surviving spouse not reporting it and continuing to draw the pension check via direct deposit. That may seem like it's too simplistic to counter fraud but the fact is that the vast majority of spouses of retirees do not know to open the email every month, they don't know what the current password is and they don't know to change it every 4 months.
And it has a great chance of changing the mind think of a lot of potential abusers. An engineer I used to work with found it. We should all be rejoicing in what is being found rather than quibbling on what the final savings may be...because it is a savings today and the future and an attempt in not kicking the can down the road as the debt grows
