Great job. Now we have some red meat to go with some eye-test and some style of play and some positional match-up info. Here is one way to evaluate the question statistically..
Purdue has played 14 games against teams of 'tournament caliber'. I will use that term loosely without defining it. You can look at the schedule and figure out who are the 14. Purdue went 8-6 in those games.
I averaged the KenPom adjusted Offensive Efficiency (AdjO) and Defensive Efficiency (AdjD) rankings of the 8 teams who Purdue beat and of the 6 teams who beat Purdue (counted Iowa 2x).
Results were as follows:
- Teams Purdue beat had an AdjO of 53 and an AdjD of 45.
- Teams who beat Purdue had an AdjO of 19 and an AdjD of 74.
The data suggests that Purdue tends to struggle more with teams that excel on the offensive end, even if they are not nearly as good defensively.
The top 5 AdjO teams that are not projected 1 or 2 seeds:
-Iowa St (2)
-Duke (4)
-Notre Dame (5)
-Kentucky (7)
-Baylor (8)
Iowa St., Notre Dame, and Baylor stand out in this group due to their AdjD in the 100's. So I'll toss them out and submit Duke and Kentucky as the two teams I fear most.
Fear no one. Bring 'em all on because to get to the promised land, you're going to have to play 'em some time. Please, this is just for fun. Do NOT turn this into anything that is not fun. So, Sunday night when the draw is announced, what TWO teams do you not want us to meet on the way to the Elite 8? You can only list two and just to make it more fun, they cannot be NC, Kansas, Villanova, Virginia or Oklahoma.
Ready, set go ...
1. West Virginia
2. Miami (FL)
Obviously oversimplified, but my opinion would have closely matched the results. Probably fear Duke more than Kentucky due to their outside shooting and NBA caliber stretch 4. Both teams are going to get the benefit of the calls.Great job. Now we have some red meat to go with some eye-test and some style of play and some positional match-up info.
Beating either of them would be something of great benefit ... recruiting, pride, happy summer, advancing in the tourney.Obviously oversimplified, but my opinion would have closely matched the results. Probably fear Duke more than Kentucky due to their outside shooting and NBA caliber stretch 4. Both teams are going to get the benefit of the calls.
