iu week. First off.......

The delusion and myopia in that huge Purdue thread is hysterical!

Page after page page of fiction about the Purdue-Indinia rivalry — an echo chamber of stupid.
I love how Courty keeps dropping the same lie about IU selling out Ass Hall since the '70s and there being a waitlist. Does their capacity change every year?

Attendance by year:

2023-24 16,468
2022-23 16,101
2021-22 15,845

Maybe, but it hasn’t happened yet. IU is keeping 10 of the 11 assistants from this year, including both coordinators.

You’re absolutely correct that recruiting hasn’t happened yet at the level of SEC schools, but the portal additions are about as high end as it gets for the coming year.

By the way, if Indiana football could do as well as Tiller did at Purdue that would be pretty damn excellent for IU.
I’d add that Tiller would have done much better, much longer, had he had university support.

He also said that Cupps makes as much as Braden and that Leal makes more. He’s such an idiot.

I’ll be shocked if Woodson is back next season. I would think that TJ Otzelberger would be on their radar.
Otz ain’t leaving Iowa state. Just got a recent extension and I’m guessing it’ll be extended even more after this year. Wife played there, is from Iowa, has family there and loves it there. On top of that he’s built that program into a contender every year, so I am very doubtful he leaves for a downgrade.

That would be a huge coup for IU and the type of guy they need. Agree that other than the Brinks truck, I’m not sure where the upside is in leaving to IU. Having said that, seems like a more realistic target than the typical IU delusion list.

I've heard that Brad Stevens has literally begged to be the head coach. Well, he has in the past.

He is actually begging to be the coach at IU. He is willing to even take a pay cut and not be the GM of one of the most recognized franchises in the world/history of basketball.

It’s heavily known he can’t wait to get back on the road and pound on doors for 15-18 year old kids, deal with their parents and go to aau tourneys all just to lose a recruit to Duke or UK.

I have no idea, honestly, but just think that he is one of the best up and coming coaches in the game.

Not just a pay cut; Brad will actually pay iu to let him coach there. That’s how bad he wants this. He will literally go into debt to coach their team. Iu fans have told me that the only reason he didn’t come last time was because his wife vetoed it. Well, he’s ready to divorce her at a moments notice if the job comes open again. Who needs family when you have iu basketball?!

Got be a 3x5 pix of him in dictionary next to the adjective insufferable.
What a pathetic existence.
Why is Cupps insufferable? Is it because the only reason people heard his name because he played with Bronny Jr? Don’t hate someone who leveraged proximity to stardom

So looking ahead to IU, they have really struggled to shoot the ball this year. The one way that they could potentially make it interesting is if guys who normally don’t shoot well completely get in a nothing to lose mentality and start hitting shots that they normally don’t make. I want to see Purdue step on the accelerator early and put the game out of reach much like they did against Michigan. I don’t see this IU team as having much fight if Purdue doesn’t let them hang around.

Weird thing is that they still appear to have a lot of talent on the roster. Coaching matters.

This is going to be their National Title game so I expect their best and if we come out like we did against UM, then we very well should curb stomp them.

Goode is the one to keep eyes on and not let him get going.

Galloway looks timid this year shooting so not worried about him.

Rice can get hot as well but don’t think he is a volume 3pt shooter.

Coaching is their biggest weakness.

As someone who has suffered through the Woodson era, in my opinion matchups and the skills of particular players don't matter nearly as much as one might think. It's the constant hours that every team has together where defensive recognition, offense decision making, team connection, understanding of scheme, and development of footwork, angles, and form that matters more and is why Mike Woodson coached IU teams underperform. For the most part (with a few exceptions) effort has not been a problem for IU, and neither has talent.

So while Ballo being guarded by Furst looks like a problem for Purdue and Smith being guarded by Rice looks like a problem for Indiana, the real problem is the long-since baked-in way they play. Six weeks from now IU will make a head coaching change take another stab at getting it right.

Here's to a competitive, injury free game, but kinda like the Purdue football team when they came to Bloomington a few months ago, I have my doubts about a competitive game.

I’ll be interested to see if Mgbako is engaged early. If he hits a few shots early on, he will actually try a bit on defense. If not, it’s been a lot of game over for him.

Ballo will get his, but how long will he be able to stay in the floor—stamina wise and will he play hard with intensity for all those mins?

We can’t let a random shooter —like carlyle get going.

I’m wondering how all the first timers will react to playing at Mackey and if the rivalry even plays a factor in how they view the matchup (guessing no).

Hope we come out like we did vs Michigan and don’t look back.

Back to my point that it's not really effort or skill issues that matter the most.

If you really focus on Mgbako, Ballo, and Reneau's defense, effort is not the issue; it is recognition and positioning. For instance, the past weekend Maryland's last possession was as intense as it gets - clearly every player was in maximum effort mode. But when Gillespie dribbled into the lane and passed to Rodney Rice who curled out to three point line, Myles Rice came over the screen as he should, and Ballo stayed behind the hedge a split second too late, allowing Rodney Rice to square up and hit the winning three:

And that kind of thing happens all the time. When Rodney Rice hit that shot there were IU players out of position all over the court. With Mgbako, on countless occasions he 'panic-rotates' because he is ball-watching or out of position.

This kind of stuff happens in home and road games, and against really good teams (at times leading to blowouts) and against lousy teams (leading to too-close wins where the lousy team hits a bunch of threes).

Again, compare it to the Walters-coached Purdue Football team. That Purdue Football roster had the same-ish roster talent as IU and a little better recruiting rankings, but on the field they weren't coached well enough on where to be and how to react. So Walters-coached players move on to other schools and in the right situation do really well, just like transfers away from Woodson become magically better. Now Woody isn't as bad as Walters and he gets better pre-IU talent, but the comparison is valid for why they underperform.

In summary, fans look at matchups, skills, and stats (and that makes sense) but winning basketball is fostered by mental development, consistent form, and recognition.

I always worry about homegrown Indiana kids in this rivalry. So I hope they shut down Goode early. I hope you are right about Galloway. Way too often we see struggling players come alive against Purdue.

Wouldn’t have thought to compare Woodson and Walters but makes sense.

Actually made me laugh.

Speak of Walters - anyone got $5m to buy his house?
