It feels like 2021 season when Edey was coming into his own

Watching the team play the other night reminded me when Edey shared minutes with, was it Willams, early in his career.

Purdue is going to struggle this year until our 4s and 5s get more comfortable on the floor as their D seems slow, their aggressiveness is low, and their rebounding is down. As time progresses and the 4s/5s continues to improve, get comfortable, understand their assignments, and build that intuition with the 3s, 2s, and 1s, then we'll return to a top contender. That chemistry between Smith and Edey was magical.

Edey, and other big men before him, are hard to replace, but it will happen, just not in our timing.

Idk. I recall feeling pretty good about the center position early on that season. I think that this year is going to be a tougher adjustment, especially with the Jacobsen injury, and I suspect that TKR will end up playing a lot of minutes at the 5 to get the most productive players on the court.

We need TKR wherever he plays to be extremely productive. Preseason, thought he would end the season as a 2nd-3rd team ALL B10. Going to have to step up the production to get to that level.

Last year's 3rd team Centers averaged......
17.6 ppg 7R
16 ppg. 10R
2nd team Forwards Ave......
16 ppg 4R
14.6 ppg 7.5R

To reach that level he will need to score in the 20s occasionally. And we need that if we have a shot at another championship. Haven't seen that yet. We know our guards will score. But need an inside game too for offensive balance.

Kinda feel whether we are champs or 3rd-5th hinges on his progress. As we know what we get from the guards. Something to watch.

I still feel like this team looks like an Iowa team, can score but not necessarily a good D team, scoring coming from the outside and not so much from the 4 and 5 positions

That usually doesn't end well. I don't think any of those Iowa teams made the sweet 16 of NCAA. Seems like only 3-4 even got in the dance the last decade, and were quickly eliminated. 1 conference tourney champ, no reg season champs.

First, LaBron was unbelievable. To be almost 40 years old, score 35 points, get a triple double while still being the most athletic person on the court is unreal.

Second, Edey missed some early shots and had foul trouble, but was quite a presence anyway. He gave Anthony Davis trouble on both sides of the court, and had some great moments defending LaBron. At one point, LaBron was trying to figure out what to do on the perimeter, Edey was guarding him with a hand in his face for several seconds while LaBron just froze and looked puzzled and couldn’t see around him. Then at the end of the half with under 20 seconds left Edey deflected two of LaBron‘s passes in a matter of seconds, the second one forcing a turnover.

Edey in the NBA is the real deal.

I think that Painter can coach this team up to play better D with the small ball lineup than we typically see from Iowa. Iowa likes to speed the game up and plays with a very different defensive philosophy than we see from Purdue with Purdue’s emphasis on help defense and connectedness.

2021 senior williams and 2nd year edey was miles better than what we have now and what we will have at the end of the year with the bbf trio. Would love to have 2nd year Edey on this team or senior Williams on this team! Would fix the rebounding for sure.

He has a lot of work to do but agree, he has shown some really positive things. I got a kick out of Davis kind of talking shit to him early, showed that he was bothered by Zach.

I see this team more like the Carsen/Cline team. No real threat underneath but guards who can fill it up.

I normally wouldn’t want to just out score teams to win but Carsen proved that it isn’t really as bad as one thinks it is as long as the shots are falling.

We have six guys who can shoot well from deep and you can add in TKR to make seven if you like. We are a tough out now but if the defense comes around to be decent and we can rebound on the defensive end, we could actually win the league IMO.

Per 40m and per 100 possessions, top rebounders have been:
1 Burgess
2 DJ
3 Heide
4 Berg

I’m sure this will change, but that’s not what I expected to see. Who doesn’t miss Trevion!

It’s way too early to draw many conclusions, but it is interesting that Burgess has 5 offensive rebounds and only 2 defensive rebounds in 25 minutes. The offensive number is great and hard to come by. Without watching enough to know, I wonder if the defensive number is low because he is focused on boxing out rather than going after the ball.
