Is this the best team Purdue has put on the hardwood???

I put this on the other board. I thought it was interesting.

There has been quite a bit of discussion on the boards about our 3 point shooting and who is/was the best team you've seen play at Purdue. I thought I would look up the stats from our first 3 games of 2009-2010 and compare them to our first 8 games this year. Here is a break down of our 3 point shooting for our first 8 games in 2009-2010.

I just found it interesting that the biggest weakness, according to quite a few here, is our 3 point shooting. Usually, the argument has been that the '09-'10 team was a much better shooting/skilled team. According to the first 8 games of each season, it appears that this years team is the better shooting team. Most shocking is that our starters of Davis, Edwards, and Biggie (22-52 for 35%) are shooting a higher 3 point % than the starters that year of Hummel, Moore, and Grant (25-89 for 28%). That really surprised me.

Comparing the starters side by side.

Hummel 10-36 for 28% - Biggie 6-21 for 29%
Moore 12-30 for 40% - Davis 6-13 for 46%
Grant 3-23 for 13% - Edwards 10-28 for 36%
JJ 0-1 for 0% - Haas 0-0 for 0%
Kramer 0-2 for 0% - PJ 7-19 for 37%
This shows not to overreact to a shooting slump. Heading into tonight, Stephens was in a 4/27 3 point shooting slump in the last four games, but in the second through seventh game 6 years ago, Hummel was 4/28.

RPI has our SOS at 123. I know it's not super accurate this early, but it should still give pause to all the people on this board just repeating how great this team is. I'm not saying we aren't good, but I still don't think we have been tested enough to say things like this.

Bingo. We haven't played/beaten a top 25 team yet.

Just sticking with the Painter era, that 09-10 team was definitely something special when healthy. Remember LewJack started the season with a foot injury & wasn't playing for those early B1G losses. Once he was healthy & before Robbie went down, that team didn't lose a game. They had a winning streak of 14 games to start the season & later ran off 10 straight in league play. They recorded wins against 4 teams that were ranked in the top 10 at the time PU played them.

I like what I've seen out of this year's team so far & think they have great potential, but they have some work to do to match that 09-10 team.

If this team stays healthy throughout the rest of the year, and continues to get better throughout the year like 99% of Purdue teams do. I'm forcasting at least a FF finish and will go down as the best team Purdues ever put out there!

Boiler up!!!!!!

I don't know that it's the best, but it sure is the deepest I've seen in my years of watching which is considerable.
+1. I go back to 1979 and I don't think any squad was close to being this deep. I was thinking about that last night during the final minutes. When we "empty our bench" there are 2 walk-ons and JT. Besides that every player would either be a starter or play solid minutes on every other B1G team. That is depth!

I believe Purdue's starting center that year was 6'11 Chuck Bavis who was built like Issac. IIRC he was injured for the final and we had to go with 7' Jerry Johnson. Johnson was built a lot more like JJ and Alcindor had a field day with him.
I was at that game...up close and personal. IIRC Mount hit his first shot in his patented falling out of bounds, behind-the-backboard corner shot with two defenders glued to him (would have been a three today), and I thought it was a great omen. Unfortunately, he didn't hit much else that day (still got 28 due to volume of shots), and the entire team shot <30%, and Alcinder (Abdul Jabbar) and the rest of UCLA's front line feasted. Most irritating part of it all was they still had a consolation game back then as a prelude to the finals, and Drake which had lost a close one in the semis to UCLA, and had an good win over NC in the consolation game, was hanging around to watch the finals and their fans were yelling something like "We're #2" (since they played UCLA closer).

I thought about 94 but that was a one man show. But you are right Big Dog could have won it all. My biggest omission was the 78 79 team.
Was the 78-79 team the one that had the "Soul Patrol" coming off the bench? I thought that was a little earlier. That team had depth with Jordan, Walls, White, And Parker platooning off the bench but they had some chemistry problems.

A little earlier yes, under Fred Schaus (the '77 team made the NCAA field). 78-79 had JBC, Sichting, Arnette Hallman, the Walkers, Rosie Barnes, Scooby Scearce and Keith Edmondson as frosh, Drake Morris, and Bemenderfer.

I've been a die hard Purdue fan since I've been born (80's to today). And I can't remember a more complete team in my 30 years of being a die hard fan. We really don't lose much from our best to our 10th guy.

Thoughts???

Let's wait and watch the entire season play out first.

Wow, not even close. If they get to the Final Four, then we can compare them to the 68-69 team or the 79-80 team that got there.
Until then, just unrealized potential
