Over the last five years, people can look at my responses and threads, and I have been as big of supporter on Brohm on this board as anyone. I have not joined discussions of Brohm needs to got, Brohm should not be our head coach, etc. This thread will not say anything about this. I just want to see what fans on here say about the way he answers questions without answering questions. I guess the lack of information on David Bell is what finally got me to write this thread.

Let me say I completely understand about HIPAA, giving families privacy on certain information, etc. However, when you have young adults playing in a national stage and in the public eye, you have to give the fans and others some information. We saw a fan favorite go down motionless and unresponsive. There has been no information at all what happened to him, is he going to be ok, etc. I think the Gold & Black Saturday night conversation video did mentioned that David was able to walk around by himself. However, a lot of people don't watch those videos. I don't know about other fans, but for a while I wondered if David could have been partially paralyzed. I am not saying release his entire medical record from Saturday afternoon, but can you give us something?

This is one thing that Brohm seems to be getting worse out each year. We saw the same thing with Rondale Moore in his sophomore year. We went weeks thinking it was his knee. There was never any news ever said about anything going on with him. Everyone just had to speculate I think it finally came out weeks later that it was his hamstring. I had seen some articles the day before the ND game that Trice was not going to play, because he got hurt somehow in practice this week. Well, what happened and how long will he out? No, information was released on this, except that it might be some time before we have Trice back. Again, vague as it can be. I really am surprised that they gave out as much information on Horvath as they did. That is the exception, not the rule.

It is not just injuries that I am referring to with this. It is the same thing when reporters ask just basic questions. I also heard this during the G&B Saturday video where they asked why AOC was brought in. There never seemed to be an explanation to that question from what I heard. Brohm was asked if Plummer was still the starting QB. He answer that question with he was still the number one guy, but we have multiple capable options at QB. Well, you answered the question, but you didn't really answer the question. Does that mean that we are going to start Plummer, play AOC in the second quarter, play Burton in the third and finish up with Alaimo then? It is not like there is not a lot of tape of both Plummer and AOC, so we are not keeping team guessing on our game plan. It really boils down to the fact that he really does not want to answer the questions. However, that is part of the job. You might not like that part of the job, but it is still a part of it.

I really have not seen the vast number of coaches in the pros or colleges be so quiet and elusive on just basic questions. Am I the only one bothered by this consistently and constantly on questions? Am I making it a bigger deal that it really is, and others don't seem to mind? Just curious what other fans on this board feel on this.

I don't like it. But I guess it's his prerogative on how he manages the press and fans. Personally, I don't think the way he manages it helps him during tough times like the past two years. If he continued to not win games, it would make it much easier for the fans to turn on him. If he wins, I don't think you're gonna see too many fans complaining.

I don't care how he answers questions. I just want him to start winning football games. He's had plenty of time to start getting this program turned around.
We're 2 and 1. He is winning so far this year. we have winnable games left. We went on the road to a top 10 team's house and competed all game long. Sure there are things to fix, but it's not like we went to some 0 and 4 team's house ang tog blown out.

Does the Illinois coaching staff have the right to know our players’ injury situations?

Lol. Notre Dame is not a top 10 football team. A top 10 team will crush them.

Maybe AC Slater and Paula Abdul dropped by their locker room to remind them how dominant Nebraska Football is?
They just didn’t have a physical team.. it took all of that young coaches schematic stuff just to hold on against the gimmicky pitch crew

I would also prefer some information, such as the status of Bell. After listening to most (all?) of his press conferences, I think that I've only really picked up on two things that might be expected and true because of a slight slip of his tongue. Otherwise, and even then, vague as vague can be.

But basically, all I want to see is Ws.

Of all the things to complain about, this has to be the most petty to be honest.

And continues to not win games? We're 2 and 1 heading in to a stretch of winnable games. People need to quit being chicken littles for crying out loud.
This.

I don't care how he handles his interviews. I want him to win games.....which I'm also fine with us sitting at 2-1 right now.

This fan base deserves to get Daryl Hazell back. We appreciate a coach for the first season of their success. Then it's bitch and moan continuously at the first sign of any trouble. It happened with Tiller. It's happening with Brohm. Hell, it even happened with Painter in basketball about 7 years ago.

Purdue has lost to ND at ND with the better team plenty of times. Losing with an inferior team all of a sudden its fire CJB? The offense was disappointing Saturday but the defense, other than 3 plays, was awesome. If we continue to play this well we probably go 7-5 or 8-4.

Not sure I could care less how he answers questions, and that's for a few reasons:

One, it's not going to change my passion for the game and the program.

Two, it's none of my d@mn business, nor should it be.

Three, I certainly don't want any upcoming opponents to know the status of any of our players. None.

I find soooooooo many of the post-game (and post-practice) interviews to be unbearably painful, primarily because of the idiotic questions asked by the members of the press. As a result, I tend to avoid them like the plague.

For what it's worth, I can only think of one thing that seems more irrelevant right now, and that's the color of our uniforms on gameday.

I refuse to follow any recruits or players on Twitter, but David Bell provided an update yesterday (I saw this via a few different sources).

Lol. Notre Dame is not a top 10 football team. A top 10 team will crush them.
#8 Cincinnati Doubtful they'd "crush" ND at ND (we shall see soon)
#5 Iowa Doubtful they'd "crush" ND at ND
#7 Texas A&M Doubtful they'd "crush" ND at ND
The way #9 Ohio St and #10 Clemson have been playing, I also highly doubt they'd "crush" ND at ND

I couple of weeks ago I posted that it was a complete waste of time listening to any CJB interview; it's just non-informative coach-speak and no details. I haven't changed my mind. Plenty of coaches give good interviews, and provide interesting info (without disclosing anything that would tip-the-hand of what our team will do on Saturday.), CJB isn't one of them. Note, I'm not talking about injury reports, etc., I'm talking about where our team is excelling, where we're struggling, and the same for our opponents. Anybody can say, "X is banged up and isn't expected to play," or, "Y is a game time decisions." That's not an interview that an injury report.

"...i think we had a good week of practice. We're going to have to compete for 60 minutes, we gotta play hard and trust our teammates. . <Opponent> is a good team, they're well-coached and they play hard. We have to execute and minimize mistakes...blah, blah, blah..."

I think CJB is slowly moving the program in the right direction, and I'm not calling for his head, but seriously, don't waste your time listening to any of his interviews. HOWEVER, Adams and few of the other assistant coaches are great interviews who will actually provide insight into our opponent.

I think that this mornings press conference was an anomaly. He actually addressed player injuries and had some information.

I have never understood this grip among fans. A coach demonstrates how good they are by what happens on the field. How they interact with media and fans has nothing to do with coaching football.

If Brohm can get us to complete for the west each year and play in bowl games almost every year nobody will give a shit how he answers the media.

Agreed...but since he's not - competing for the west each year and not playing in a bowl game almost every year -- we've got to find plenty of other things to bitch about. :)

Ok, so I'm kinda sitting on the fence here.

I agree that I'm much more concerned about the inability to put together an offensive line that can actually open a hole, or pass protect for a 3 count; but I do find his interactions with the press down right annoying.

Like someone earlier alluded to, he just seems to act like dealing with the media is some huge bother. In reality, it's just another part of the gig (part of his contractually obligated activities as head coach).
The best I can liken it to is a retail manager, who doesn't want to deal with any of the customers; it just doesn't work that way.

I guess (to me), it's more about his antagonistic approach towards all things media. He almost acts (IMHO) like he's doing it because he has to, but then he's gonna sit there and be all pissy/pouty about it (like my 8 yr old son used to do, when he had to go watch(sit through) his older brother's band concerts).
I guess for me, it all boils down to this: there's always going to be aspects of our job that we dislike, but sack up, and be an adult about things.

Again, (as stated before), I'd be MUCH more forgiving of his social inadequacies, if Jack, AOC (whomever the QB is) had the time to actually get set, and deliver the ball to one of our receivers.
Having Milton, D.B. (or hell even Rondale) doesn't make a whole lot of difference, when the pocket often collapses before the QB can even make his 3 step drop.

I have watched almost every interview and press conference that Brohm has been involved in. Maybe I am forgetting an occasion or two but I do not remember a time whe Brohm was “pissy” or “pouty” during one.

He just does not go into detail about injuries or game plan adjustments in them so his answers are very vanilla. He also doesn’t call out players or coaches in them.

I not only don’t mind how he answers questions and behaves in the press conferences, I respect him more for it.

Call it what you will, but he (IMHO) just acts like he's downright unhappy to be there.
Maybe call it nonverbal communication then; the deep sigh before answering a question, the stone cold expressionless gaze, as he pauses a couple seconds, before giving that pat non-answer to a question.

I don't have to tell you that you can tell someone everything you wanna covey, with just a look or reaction (without speaking a word). I'm not saying he's going all Dennis Green on the media here, but his nonverbal cues are pretty telling sometimes.

I've watched a lot of CJB pressers too, and (again, I'm entitled to my own opinion), a lot of the time I'm just waiting for the eye roll, or the "next question please...".
Sometimes it's how you say it, that says more than what you actually say.

You are absolutely entitled to your opinion. I wasn’t trying to say that you were not.

I just disagree with what you are saying. Those nonverbal cues you pointed out might also be used in his everyday conversation or as a way to gather his thoughts. Also his general surliness could be anger, frustration, disappointment with his team or coaches after a game or practice.

I have been around high school football nearly all my life and Brohm does not come across very different than 90% of other coaches I have encountered.

I am just trying to give a counterpoint to your argument and I too am entitled to an opinion.

We are spoiled because coach Painter is probably the most informative coach to listen to in the whole country.

You are pretty spot on here. Not only is he informative, but he also shows that he is one of the more knowledgeable coaches out there (call it being a "basketball junkie", "student of the game" whatever).

I get the vibe that CMP is confident enough in his preparation and schemes that it just doesn't matter what "top secret information" the opponent gets from an interview; if his team executes his plan, then Purdue is gonna win no matter what the other team does.

Agreed. Compare a Brohm interview with a Painter interview. Painter comes across as direct, likeable and brutally honest at times. Brohm comes across as elusive and really not very likeable IMO.

I agree most fans only care about wins and losses but part of a coaches job is to sell the program to fans and recruits. I didn't expect a win last weekend and I thought we played pretty well so I'm certainly not calling for Brohm's job. However, if things start going south, the way he handles these interviews could come back and haunt him. It certainly didn't help Danny Hope.

You may be right? It may just be how he is. You are certainly welcome to your opinion.
Come to think of it, I don't recall him (as coach anyway), being all smiles after a win either.

I just don't find it real appealing, as the face of our program. And, as we all are aware, the coach's personality plays a small part of what sells tickets, gets recruits, and wins the hearts of the fanbase (all of which helps promote the program overall). Sorta like how having a strong social media presence these days, has become increasingly more important to a program's success.

As far as other coaches go, I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree there.
I've seen plenty of coaches that are personable, (or even just relatable), even after a tough loss. He may be an outlier in the other extreme, but Coach Painter as mentioned above, is certainly one such example.
Hell, even Danny Hope seems like a media darling, (despite a comparable losing record), compared toJeff Brohm.

Again, not even winning, but just being competitive, is integral. That's the remedy that would make all this micro analysis of every detail seem not so interesting, or important (to me anyway).

Well, all that seems to matter is winning games. Do you see Alabama fans being upset at Nick Saban for acting like a complete @sshat with the media? No.

Damn it; I typed out my reply, then took a couple minutes to take out the dogs, only to come back and hit post, before seeing your reply.
I could have saved all that time, (and you said it better-in 300 less words to boot), just by seeing your post. Although, my Danny Hope comment was decidedly much more sarcastic in nature.

You're probably right, but historically, Purdue p's down its leg when it plays ND. Now, I don't think Purdue did that last Saturday. I think the difference was simply that ND, as a whole, has more talent on both sides of the ball than Purdue ever will. I had little hope that we'd go into South Bend and win.

not sure that's true.

Historically, when we don't play well at all there's been quite a gap in talent. When there's not, we play a pretty stout game, and even walk away with a "W".

I just think it's past time to expect better results from Purdue under Coach Brohm. That was a very mediocre Notre Dame team. They are average or below average on offense, defense and special teams. I'll give you playing in Notre Dame Stadium can probably be intimidating.

But Coach Brohm is paid like an elite top 10 coach. It's time to start expecting some elite results. I'm not saying he should be fired. But the results should and need to be better. Battling a bad Oregon State team to the wire for a win. Blowing out a horrible Connecticut team. Then losing to a mediocre Notre Dame team by two touchdowns is not cutting it. If David Bell is out this weekend I have my doubts that they'll handle Illinois.

Tiller was equally abrasive with the media, if not more so. He just had a better sense of humor. And less media exposure.

The Painter comparison is interesting. But basketball and football are very different animals.

GREAT!!

Now, we all can "expect better results for Purdue under Coach Brohm".

Now what?

If we don't get it, what do we do? Do we b*tch, p*ss and moan on an internet forum? Position ourselves as better fans? Or, at least, fans with "higher expectations" than those other clowns?

"... a bad Oregon State team..."

"... a horrible Connecticut team..."

"... a mediocre Notre Dame team..."

You ... "expect" ... "elite results". If you don't get what you want, then what? More complaining?

This. I think he genuinely gets annoyed by the questions that these beat reporters are asking. I know I cringe listening to some of the interviews. Not very good questions at all.

At this point, most of those guys know what kinds of questions he’s typically willing to answer yet they go in there asking the same questions every single time and get the same vanilla answers. Several years of doing this and I’d probably be disengaged from these pressers too.

He runs the coaching operation close to his chest, that’s just his style. It’s probably to prevent other teams from being able to take advantage of specific situations with regard to scheming. We aren’t afforded the luxury rn of being a top team with very few weaknesses, so we actually get tangible benefit in anything we can keep our next week’s opponent guessing on.

Worked out pretty good for the NE Patriots
