Let me preface it with I am not a fan of government spending. It's often wasteful due to bureaucracy. There is little incentive to keep the cost low, and often lacks measure effectiveness. Many times they even backfire, b/c they tend to address the symptoms, and not the cause.

That said, your characterization seems way off the mark, and says more about your own bias. First of all, the $3.5T price tag is over 10 years, or $350B a year. OK, $350B is still a lot of money, but compared that to the $6.6T federal government spending a year, that's like 5%. So if your dinner is already $66, you think a $3.5 tip is outrageous? Another comparison would be Dept of Defense's annual budget of $721B, and $350B is not even half of that. If $350B can rebuild the country, deal with climate change and all that, it sounds like something worth considering.

Second, I don't see an issue with the "What's your number?" approach. Imagine your house badly needs repair. You and your wife both agree that it needs some renovation. You want to fix a ton of stuff and that will cost $3.5k, but your wife says that's waaaaaay above the budget. So instead of going through item by item, another approach is to ask your wife, "So what's the budget that we can work with?" If she says, "We can only afford $1.5k," then you will try to prioritize to see if the most urgent things can be done within $1.5k, or whether you two need to find ways to allocate more. I don't think your wife will find that disturbing.

But of course, if you come from a place where everything the other side does must be evil intent, then you can always find disturbing conspiracy theories.

Great rationalization, which unfortunately is why we see these wasteful expenditure of tax dollars every year. About 90% of what they're spending is for political expediency and BOTH Parties do it. Waste is waste, regardless of who creates the means to waste our tax dollars. BTW, my bias is that I'm a Fiscal Conservative, which seems to be a dying breed in our country these days.

Comparing a $1500 home improvement to a $3.5Trillion boondoggle is a false equivalency. If you renovate your house, you know in great detail, what needs to be done vs what you just want to get done. The objective is well defined. When I get estimates on things like this, I have them give me the cost of the things I need to get done and then ask how much more it will cost to get the other things done, too. That way I know exactly what I'm getting done and how much it will cost.

Most of these programs that they're voting to spend Billions of dollars on are poorly defined, have little to no hard/measurable objectives and are usually created to make political donors wealthier and average taxpayers poorer. They attach noble labels like, "Fight Climate Change", "Help the Children", etc, so people will be vilified, if they object to them. The politicians are great at "bait & switch", too. They'll tell you that you're getting one thing and when the bill is passed, you find out that you've been deceived again. The worst thing about these programs is that they NEVER DIE.

In the immortal words of Nancy Pelosi, "You have to pass the bill to find out what's in it." How she got reelected after making that idiotic comment attests to the idiocy of CA voters. Of course, this spending bill is over 2500 pages that Lobbyists wrote and very few, if any politicians have read.

Don't tell me that you fell for the scam? This program will be paid for over 10 years - BS. It will NEVER be paid for. It will be an albatross hanging around our children's & grandchildren's necks forever. We should demand that spening bills should be itemized and each item should be voted up or down, based on it's merit. The fallacy in your example is that people actually have to attempt to live within their actual means. The wall was never going to cover the entire 1700 miles of the border. Ideally, they wanted to build about 800 - 1000 miles of wall, which allows the Border Patrol to use their resources more efficiently. There will be some gaps in the walls, which creates choke points, so the agents can concentrate their efforts there. It's like your house. If there were no walls, people could come in anywhere. When you put walls on a house, it funnels people to the doors, if they want to get in.

I never said anything about Chicago, but it would also hold true there. MS-13 is a vicious group that likes to behead their rivals. Yes, they're real and yes, they're scattered all over the country. I really don't care what the ethnicity of the gangs is. When you get two gangs disputing the same turf, people are going to die and often there are innocent victims.

FYI, a lot of the Haitians had applied for asylum in Chile and got it. When they found out Biden had opened the border, they left Chile and came to the US. Apparently, the Border Patrol found a lot of Chilean IDs scattered around the border. Biden's folly.

I had a friend, who had been a year ahead of me in HS, who was elected to Congress, He told me that the first day he was there, one of the good old boys wrapped his arm around his shoulder and said, "Let me explain how things work around here, son. Contrary to what Sen. Tim Scott says, there is money for the police. If they want to put more police on the streets, fine. Hopefully it is for better training to how to deal with certain situations. More police won’t stop gang violence though. The Chicago police superintendent said publicly that the courts are letting people back out on the streets too soon.

You're confused. The Dems make a big production about being in favor of a $15/hr min wage, but that's all BS. The last thing we need is the Federal government setting Minimum wages for the entire country. The economies vary from state to state and from one region of the country to another. $15/hr may not get anyone interested in NYC, DC or San Francisco, because the cost of living is so high. On the other hand, in small towns in Mississippi or Alabama, the cost of living is much lower and $15/hr may be almost twice the prevailing wage rate. Small businesses there might have to let an employee or 2 go, or cut their hours to stay in business, if they had to pay $15/hr.

The Republicans want to let the market decide what the wages will be: for example, if I'm a small businessman and I advertise a job for $10/hr and it's been 2 weeks and I haven't gotten an application, I'll bump it up to $10.50 or more later if necessary, until I can hire a qualified individual. In a competitive environment, where there are more jobs to fill, than qualified people to fill them, wages go up, bacause employers want to retain high quality employees. Conversely, if the market is flooded with people, who can do a specific job, wages can go down.

That's the problem that Biden is creating now with minimum wage workers. He's flooding the market with illegal immigrants, who will compete with unskilled workers for those minimum wage jobs. So that Democrat President, who cares so much about Black people is creating an environment, where unskilled young Black kids may NOT get their first job, because an illegal has it.

BTW, in December 2019, before the pandemic, Black & Hispanic unemployment were at their lowest levels in History. Yup, that happened when that Damned Republican Racist Trump was President.

Now you have Black loving Democrat Biden flooding the country with illegal immigrants which will depress wages and keep a lot of Black youth from getting jobs. That initial job is the first step on the ladder of success. Biden's policies will keep some kids from having the opportunity to take that first step.

Did you support the billions of dollars President Chump wanted his border wall? They told you what this money is for. This infrastructure bill is for roads, bridges, cybersecurity, colleges and universities, money for day care, removing lead pipes that still wreck havoc in some cities, etc. I rather spend money for infrastructure than a stupid wall we don't need.
