I watched a few bits and pieces....ugly. What Charlie Jones did in is first game with O'Connell against a solid PSU defense tells you all you need to know on how bad the Iowa offense is. I can't believe they haven't replaced Petras in the portal era and he's back again.
Thursday night sucked, but the silver lining is Purdue showed they will likely be an upper half B1G team, which means they will be in contention for the West. There's been some ugly football the past few days, but Purdue and Penn St both looked the part on both sides of the ball in an entertaining and competitive game.
I was pleasantly surprised how well we held up in the trenches.
Biggest weak points:
- Rushing the QB
- Linebacker speed in coverage and sealing the edge
- Actually utilizing the run game (I think we can run if we actually call running plays)
S Dakota OL is totally overmatched and Iowa offense is more Iowa than ever.
Networks are working furiously to get the remaining Iowa games shuffled to BTN plus
It'll be like watching paint dry. Iowa's D has outscored their O with 2 safeties vs a field goal. Really bad offense versus an FCS team...

With three minutes to go,they have combined for 109 plays for 264 yards.The two teams have punted twenty times.The only guys that have earned their scholarships today were the long snappers and punters.
Game over.Hawkeyes roll 7 to 3.The teams combined for 288 yards on 117 plays.Thats less than 2.5 yards per play.If the Iowa offense doesnt improve by November,the Purdue defense will look like the 1985 Bears when the Hawks come to Ross Ade.
Every year Iowa offense is ugly but they keep winning and they keep getting rated in the top 20 at the end of the year! Ask yourself what would you rather have? A top 20 rating and and a nice bowl game? Or an exciting offense and we almost won and a .500 record and a lesser bowl game and received a few votes but not no top 25 rating? I would take a top 20 rating , 8-9 wins and a decent bowl game every day verses having an exciting pass happy offense that almost wins games!
Dude, we've beaten them for the past several years. And they lost to UK in that bowl vame. The last thing I'd want is to spend time watching paint dry every game. Why don't you become an Iowa fan if you think that kind of game is what you want from your team...
Dude! All I want is a win! I don’t care how you get it! I was born and raised in Wisconsin! I’ll take the Packers championships and their boring style of football any day over those flamboyant pass happy teams that have no idea how to run the clock out by running the football in the 4th quarter and playing defense! Bart starr did not come close to Fouts or unitus in passing stats. However neither of those two plus Peyton manning combined came close to his number of nfl championships!
so go ahead and love your pass happy teams that have exciting home run passes and come close to winning. I’ll take ugly wins! And I’m quite sure if Purdue went 13-0 and was a really boring team, there would be a lot more fans happy!
what you see here are the die hard fans! The total is less than 100 that post regularly. The vast majority of Purdue fans could care less anout AOC’s passing stats and would just take the win. Consider me a casual fan.
ask the IU fan what he’d rather have. A win? Or looking good? I think it’s time Purdue started making winning their priority rather than looking good! Unfortunately the many thousands of other fans who share my opinion don’t post here! Ask any Purdue basketball fan what they’d rather have? Great stats? Or a final 4 appearance?

Iowa vs Purdue. Sure Purdue usually beats them. But at the end of the year, whose record, whose national standing, and whose bowl games would you rather have for the last 5 years? Last decade? Last 20 years? And their talent isn’t any better than Purdue! They make winning their priority!
What is Purdue’s priority? Winning? Or being the cradle of QBs?

If you’re going to shoehorn the Packers into every argument, you might want to acknowledge the fact that they have been a successful pass first team for 30+ years now.
Know what the last several Super Bowl champs have in common? Bottom third of the league in running the football.
Honest question. How many hours of football have you actually watched since 1985?
Agree on those and would also add in tackling and penalties. In hindsight it all depends on how good PSU really is, but this team held up really well against a likely solid opponent out of the gate. They have a true sense on what the weakness are and 3 winnable games to improve in those areas before the conference slate hits.
As a positive Jones and Rice both looked like they can be a solid 1 and 2 option which answered a big question in the WR room.
The defense also played good enough to win. 3 years ago when they simply could not ever get off the field seems to be in the distant rearview and it's nice to see them forcing punts with regularity. They were better than I thought they'd be.
Iowa has has more talent on their side in almost every game over the last 12 years. With exception of 1 position, QB. And in some recent years WR.
I wanna keep winning like Iowa and Wisconsin. Remind me. How ugly were their wins this weekend?
Iowa’s biggest gain on offense today was a 15 yard unsportsmanlike penalty on Iowa State. 150 yards of total offense.
I’ve got relatives in Iowa and they are actively bi_ching about Ferentz and son specifically. They are texting me both yesterday and today about their woes.
Brohm’s going to have to really comb through some ashes to find our next wide receiver call-up from AAA Iowa.
Or NEB or next struggling B1G team that doesn’t throw the ball well.
They are saving it for conference play and then are going to unleash their offensive fury...
