Cox will help a lot. Plus we will have Jacobson back and stronger. Which he need some weight anyways. We will have way more supporting cast next year. It wouldn't surprise me if Colvin or Heide leave. Not sure why they aren't way better this year.
IU played well getting to the hoop, passing, defending Loyer ( till the end) shooting a high percentage, but their turnovers killed them. The refs took TKR out of the game, but he showed his resilience at the end. Smith was Smith lots of good, shooting under pressure, steals assists and too many turnovers. Some of his turnovers was having to carry more of the load with TKR out .
Because we let them have 300 offensive rebounds. And we made like 2 threes and missed a bunch of free throws. We should have lost by double digits honestly.
Also too bad Mason didn’t stay. Doesn’t seem to be a fit with Duke at all. Well below his career norm in minutes. Assuming he would have stayed if it was known before hand that Catchings was leaving

Interested in seeing if TV seemed as bad officials as live. That said, they did a good job defending the three. Fouls early on Braden and Trey which appeared to be them just losing footing looked bad on replay on scoreboard and was a bad start. I was worried about their perimeter size and getting in the lane . Won’t be surprised if refs are better in Bloomington. Purdue lucky to get WGood evening, ladies and gentlemen. Tonight, it's the Indiana Hoosiers (14-7; 5-5) visiting Mackey Arena to take on the #10-ranked Purdue Boilermakers (16-5; 8-2) in the first of their two annual clashes. Tip is set for approximately 8:00 pm (Eastern time) with television coverage on FOX.
Projected Starting Line-ups:
Indiana - Malik Reneau, Mackenzie Mgbako, Oumar Ballo, Myles Rice, and Anthony Leal or Trey Galloway
Purdue - Trey Kaufman-Renn, Caleb Furst, CJ Cox, Fletcher Loyer, and Braden Smith

Indiana is coming off a tough stretch where they've lost four of five games. The most recent game last weekend was a tough one-point loss at home to Maryland giving up the lead in the final seconds. Despite that, the Hoosiers have talented players and the potential to beat anybody when they play/shoot well and limit breakdowns.
Mackenzie Mgbako led Indiana against Maryland with 16 points and five rebounds. He is one of the top outside shooters for the Hoosiers; the 6'9 sophomore forward has 33 made threes on the season on 35.5% shooting from beyond the arc. He is averaging 12.5 PPG on the season. Indiana's top scorer and rebounder is its center, Oumar Ballo, a transfer from Arizona. He is a big presence in the paint at 7'0 and 265 pounds, and the senior center is averaging 14.5 PPG and 10.2 RPG. Ballo has scored 14 or more in each of his last four games, including a strong 21-point, 15-rebound performance in a win over Ohio State. The Hoosiers' other top scorer is Malik Reneau, another true post player as neither he or Ballo has more than three made three-pointers on the year. Reneau is a 6'9, 230-pound forward producing 13.1 PPG and 5.7 RPG.
Indiana also gets contributions from guards Myles Rice (transfer from Washington State), Trey Galloway, and Anthony Leal. Transfers Kanaan Carlyle (Stanford) and Luke Goode (Illinois) also are regulars in the rotation. Goode is one of Indiana's biggest threats from long range and has had some success against Purdue in the past. Indiana is currently 62nd overall in KenPom ratings, 62nd in offensive efficiency and 65th in defensive efficiency. Adjusted tempo rating has the Hoosiers currently at above average pace, 107th.
Purdue is currently rated 8th overall, 7th offensively and 26th defensively. Adjusted tempo is rated 288th.
The in-state rivalry aspect always increases the stakes for both teams and adds to the intrigue for fans. As to the rivalry aspect, here are some thoughts from Coach Matt Painter - "We don't look at it as another game. This is a rivalry game. It's cool. Just satisfaction. You want to win, you want to beat your rival. You don't want them to have the upper hand on you. For us, we want to win the Big Ten. That comes before the NCAA Tournament."
If Purdue wants to stay in touch with conference leader, Michigan State, they'll need to prevail tonight, being two games down already in the loss column. In addition to the rivalry, this is a big game for Indiana in trying to position itself for inclusion in the NCAA Tournament field. A victory tonight would be a quality win to add to the current 2-7 record in Quad 1 games. There are additional opportunities the rest of the way, but this one would be a great start.
Look for Indiana, to attempt to get an edge inside the paint, where they have a decided edge in size. Oumar Ballo has been Indiana’s most consistent player this season, and Purdue does not have a great matchup for him. Trey Kaufman-Renn will get his chances, but at 6-foot-9 and 230 pounds he’s giving up a lot of size to the 7-foot, 265-pound Ballo. TKR will also need to be careful about foul trouble, which occasionally has been a problem - tonight it would be a bigger problem. Caleb Furst and Raleigh Burgess will also get plenty of opportunities (and maybe even more than TKR) to try and keep Ballo in check. Make him work for it, try to keep him from dominating the glass, and also make hime earn it from the FT line, where he often struggles - that is expected to be part of the defensive game plan. Another player who could pose some problems is Luke Goode because of his ability to hit shots from the perimeter. Purdue can give up big games to shot-makers, even at home - as seen recently as last week against Ohio State.
From Matt Painter - "Being able to play and guard against elite size and try to play to your strengths and not getting into those wrestling matches....cuz you're going to lose giving up three or four inches and 30 pounds. Those guys are tough covers."
It will be interesting to see what Purdue's defense can do on the perimeter and against Indiana's guards. If the Boilers are able to limit the drives of the Hoosiers, that can give them an edge, as Indiana has not been extremely proficient from outside - they are capable, however, and that will be one of Indiana's keys to winning, especially if Galloway and others are not able to get to the rim consistently.
Look for Braden Smith to lead Purdue's attack, especially with looking more for his shot on offense and continuing to be a disruptive force on defense, which could ignite some transition runs for Purdue. Absent foul trouble, I would expect Smith to be on the floor close to the entire game, with a few breaks here and there. This is the first Indiana game for CJ Cox and Gicarri Harris - think they will find out pretty quickly how intense it can be.

"They play a couple different ways.....obviously when they have both their bigs in versus when Luke Goode plays the four. It's just making sure you're prepared to how they play the game. .....And then their guards' ability....you got to kind of look at each guard and grab their best game and then collectively say what if they all had their best game at the same time. Mbako has shot the ball a lot better the last two games.....we've all seen through the years Trey Galloway and how good a player he is. Last year when Washington State played Stanford, Carlyle had 31 and Rice had 35 in the same game."

It should be a spirited contest. Indiana Coach Mike Woodson is 3-3 against Purdue and Matt Painter, and he usually has a good game plan for Purdue. Can the Boilers keep things on track and win this final game of a three-game homestand, or does Indiana get a much needed big win to build some momentum?

I dont think IU shot a single pull up 3 off the dribble on the high PnR but was getting so many cross court skip pass 3s and buckets on the drive or dish to ballo from it.
We had been doing a ton of switching on all screens or going under when teams hadnt shown they were going to hit those pull up 3s, someone please explain to me why we stopped doing either of those???
The drop coverage with defender going over the screen is 100% without a doubt the most dumb and worst way of defending the PnR. You couldnt find 1 single guard in the world that would prefer you do anything other than drop coverage.

They did a good job covering the three ball, but in the gym it did appear the refs were having a bad game
Yes, I think that’s what we’ll see, probably would do well at an Indiana State/Valpo type program. Painter had zero confidence in him, I hope Waddell plays his 5th season at the same type of school, he’ll likely be graduating, go down a level and have some fun, him and Berg won’t get minutes next year.
At the risk of hyperbole, developing in CMP’s /Brantley’s system as a big is the equivalent of a Harvard law degree….

CJ got a steal that was a foul, but otherwise they just called what they didn’t the first half it seemed. Once Woody got the time out it seemed it was a more typical gAme it appeared
When the game was close towards the end and Purdue still had a lead even though they were also scoring at will…I was kinda thinking with Ballo setting screens that a player not hurting for fouls need to run into him and send him to the line cause they were scoring on layups more than he was a threat at the line. Likewise when Purdue ha
D Time out I figured they were not going to let Trey score underneath and send him to the line.
Mike Reed and Doug Sirmons, TJ. I think Sirmons did the game at Wisconsin last season....have to double check that.
EDIT - yes, Sirmons was with Dorsey and Pfeifer at the Kohl Center last year.

If I had to find a quibble with CMP, the failure of these guys to be able to impact a game would be it….
Maddeningly frustrating!
With Cox and Harris taking the time from Myles and Cam, I don't see them here next year. Myles needs a year at a much smaller school for a year and did absolutely nothing tonight.
He is playing with nba players at his dream school and in a great atmosphere. He’s the 6th-7th guy off the bench. He was a great complement to Zach but wouldn’t be near as efficient this year as last. It would have been six years at Purdue. It was time to move on and let others develop.
Also, painter made him (as well as Ethan and Zach) decide if they were coming back for another at the start of last year. He knew Mason would be able to get paid at a good school and wanted him to be able to hit the portal (if that’s what he wanted) instantly to get the best deal possible. But he also said he would have taken all 3 back in a heartbeat but that had to decide before the season.
It was a good decision for both parties.
Purdue - +21 with TKR on the floor (26 minutes); conversely Reneau's foul trouble probably helped Indiana.
Agent Smith - double duty tonight - 40 minutes - also 6 steals and 6 turnovers with 7 of Purdue's only 9 assists. Led Purdue with 24 tonight. Very solid game for him, but I expect he's a little irritated.
