Indiana at Purdue: MASTER DISCUSSION THREAD

This game will be hilarious. It'll also be hilarious watching Purdue try to flex at a fan base who doesn't care anymore.
Have you seen anyone flex here? Seems a lot more like nobody really cares that it’s Indiana. Y’all have become more like Nebraska to us.

Wrong yet again, Wrong Shot!

You probably don’t know, but there exists an Indinia Rivals fan forum that is replete with threads about tonight’s game…

I think I now understand why you’re constantly hanging around here with your odd obsession with Purdue— those on your own team’s board have probably already pegged you as the clueless blowhard you are 🤣🤣🤣

IU fans are hilarious.

"We shouldn't show up to the games until they fire the coach" or is it "Our fan base doesn't care about IU basketball right now".

IU fan to the opposing fan base "We have the best fans in college sports" or is it "Your fan base can't compete with IU".

Jesus! What in the Bipolar disorder is going on here.

X is pretty bad. Only IU fans on there who act like everything is good are probably getting paid. We just want Woody fired.

Well IU does have great fans. Also smart fans who knows this garbage coaching regime and Quinn Buckner needs to end. And sooner rather than later would be best.

Just enjoyed a nice pregame lunch and beverages at The Tap. Got a chance to kibitz briefly with Isaac Haas. He mentioned that he is now retired from playing. and is working in real estate. He was nice to put up with this old dude, but really, he’s just tall.

Unless I am mistaken, I believe it was -13.5 on ESPN earlier today, but it now reflects -11.5 there.

You should've looked at Twitter about the time of the Bucket game to see exactly what you described. Wasn't hard to see which side is used to winning these games and which one isn't.

It's noted though that you don't care. I predict IU fans will care tremendously if they happen to win. But it's good to know that you will remain silent regardless since you don't care.

IU fans are anything but great. It has been a few coaches since your coach had to admonish your fans for chanting a racial slur towards an opposing player so kudos for that I guess.

Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. Tonight, it's the Indiana Hoosiers (14-7; 5-5) visiting Mackey Arena to take on the #10-ranked Purdue Boilermakers (16-5; 8-2) in the first of their two annual clashes. Tip is set for approximately 8:00 pm (Eastern time) with television coverage on FOX.

Projected Starting Line-ups:

Indiana - Malik Reneau, Mackenzie Mgbako, Oumar Ballo, Myles Rice, and Anthony Leal or Trey Galloway

Purdue - Trey Kaufman-Renn, Caleb Furst, CJ Cox, Fletcher Loyer, and Braden Smith

__________________________

Indiana is coming off a tough stretch where they've lost four of five games. The most recent game last weekend was a tough one-point loss at home to Maryland giving up the lead in the final seconds. Despite that, the Hoosiers have talented players and the potential to beat anybody when they play/shoot well and limit breakdowns.

Mackenzie Mgbako led Indiana against Maryland with 16 points and five rebounds. He is one of the top outside shooters for the Hoosiers; the 6'9 sophomore forward has 33 made threes on the season on 35.5% shooting from beyond the arc. He is averaging 12.5 PPG on the season. Indiana's top scorer and rebounder is its center, Oumar Ballo, a transfer from Arizona. He is a big presence in the paint at 7'0 and 265 pounds, and the senior center is averaging 14.5 PPG and 10.2 RPG. Ballo has scored 14 or more in each of his last four games, including a strong 21-point, 15-rebound performance in a win over Ohio State. The Hoosiers' other top scorer is Malik Reneau, another true post player as neither he or Ballo has more than three made three-pointers on the year. Reneau is a 6'9, 230-pound forward producing 13.1 PPG and 5.7 RPG.

Indiana also gets contributions from guards Myles Rice (transfer from Washington State), Trey Galloway, and Anthony Leal. Transfers Kanaan Carlyle (Stanford) and Luke Goode (Illinois) also are regulars in the rotation. Goode is one of Indiana's biggest threats from long range and has had some success against Purdue in the past. Indiana is currently 62nd overall in KenPom ratings, 62nd in offensive efficiency and 65th in defensive efficiency. Adjusted tempo rating has the Hoosiers currently at above average pace, 107th.

Purdue is currently rated 8th overall, 7th offensively and 26th defensively. Adjusted tempo is rated 288th.

The in-state rivalry aspect always increases the stakes for both teams and adds to the intrigue for fans. As to the rivalry aspect, here are some thoughts from Coach Matt Painter - "We don't look at it as another game. This is a rivalry game. It's cool. Just satisfaction. You want to win, you want to beat your rival. You don't want them to have the upper hand on you. For us, we want to win the Big Ten. That comes before the NCAA Tournament."

If Purdue wants to stay in touch with conference leader, Michigan State, they'll need to prevail tonight, being two games down already in the loss column. In addition to the rivalry, this is a big game for Indiana in trying to position itself for inclusion in the NCAA Tournament field. A victory tonight would be a quality win to add to the current 2-7 record in Quad 1 games. There are additional opportunities the rest of the way, but this one would be a great start.

Look for Indiana, to attempt to get an edge inside the paint, where they have a decided edge in size. Oumar Ballo has been Indiana’s most consistent player this season, and Purdue does not have a great matchup for him. Trey Kaufman-Renn will get his chances, but at 6-foot-9 and 230 pounds he’s giving up a lot of size to the 7-foot, 265-pound Ballo. TKR will also need to be careful about foul trouble, which occasionally has been a problem - tonight it would be a bigger problem. Caleb Furst and Raleigh Burgess will also get plenty of opportunities (and maybe even more than TKR) to try and keep Ballo in check. Make him work for it, try to keep him from dominating the glass, and also make hime earn it from the FT line, where he often struggles - that is expected to be part of the defensive game plan. Another player who could pose some problems is Luke Goode because of his ability to hit shots from the perimeter. Purdue can give up big games to shot-makers, even at home - as seen recently as last week against Ohio State.

From Matt Painter - "Being able to play and guard against elite size and try to play to your strengths and not getting into those wrestling matches....cuz you're going to lose giving up three or four inches and 30 pounds. Those guys are tough covers."

It will be interesting to see what Purdue's defense can do on the perimeter and against Indiana's guards. If the Boilers are able to limit the drives of the Hoosiers, that can give them an edge, as Indiana has not been extremely proficient from outside - they are capable, however, and that will be one of Indiana's keys to winning, especially if Galloway and others are not able to get to the rim consistently.

Look for Braden Smith to lead Purdue's attack, especially with looking more for his shot on offense and continuing to be a disruptive force on defense, which could ignite some transition runs for Purdue. Absent foul trouble, I would expect Smith to be on the floor close to the entire game, with a few breaks here and there. This is the first Indiana game for CJ Cox and Gicarri Harris - think they will find out pretty quickly how intense it can be.

Additional thoughts from Matt Painter -

"They play a couple different ways.....obviously when they have both their bigs in versus when Luke Goode plays the four. It's just making sure you're prepared to how they play the game. .....And then their guards' ability....you got to kind of look at each guard and grab their best game and then collectively say what if they all had their best game at the same time. Mbako has shot the ball a lot better the last two games.....we've all seen through the years Trey Galloway and how good a player he is. Last year when Washington State played Stanford, Carlyle had 31 and Rice had 35 in the same game."

"We have to give them our best crack, but we have to also walk into it thinking we're going to get theirs also."

It should be a spirited contest. Indiana Coach Mike Woodson is 3-3 against Purdue and Matt Painter, and he usually has a good game plan for Purdue. Can the Boilers keep things on track and win this final game of a three-game homestand, or does Indiana get a much needed big win to build some momentum?

We shall see, coming up in a few hours.

Boiler up, my friends.

Does IU have any alumni fans? Every slobbering IU fan I know never went to college.

What about Davis, Crean, Miller and/or the Sampson debacle. Taking a coach with issues from his former program is a joke. That's the IU mentality.
Made me think of this gem today. She’s funny and all but has her “sofa king we todd did” moments.

Smart but not smarter than the barrier QB has built insulating Woody.

Now you’re not removing a coach, you’re also removing and dethroning a treasured alumni in a power position. That’s a tough one.

I’d be curious how you fire Woodson and kneecap Buckner at the same time. That is like when Walt calls the hit in jails on all of Gus and Mike’s guys while negotiating new deals with international drug cartels. Gonna be epic

I already did my prediction earlier in a different thread but I’ll do my real one here.

We get off to a hot start where CJ has a couple of easy pickpocket steals that lead to some easy transition points. By time we hit the under 16, IU has already burned 1 timeout and we are up 10-12 points.

We ramp up the pressure and defense which leads to a couple of a spectacular breakout dunks and alley-oops. As we head into the half, our lead hovers around 20.

Second half, Painter and crew ramp up the defense and extend the lead to 30. There is an IU timeout and Galloway walks over to the Purdue bench in tears saying he’s sorry for doubting Paint . Anthony Leal is seen negotiating a deal to sell coach Walter’s house and Mgbako is in an Uber on his way to Taco Bell. Every timeout and break we see Goode reminding Woodson the game isn’t over.

The game ends as Jace throws a half court lob to Waddell for a reverse jam. Purdue wins 101 - 51. Painter makes everyone run stairs for giving up 50 points.

With all due respect, I think you’re an excellent poster but in this case you’re overthinking it.

Buckner’s term on the board ends in a few months, the Cignetti hire bought Dolson major capital with the big money boosters, and I believe even Buckner and Woodson know it’s over. My guess is that Woodson won’t be “fired”, he’ll announce his retirement; either at the end of the season or sooner if they give Woody no choice.

I started my pre game at 4 - too old for that - but I’m gonna fight through because if we play anywhere near last Friday we win going away. My only concern is Goode - he could go off - from Indiana - game will actually mean something and only real legitimate 3 point shooter they have. Colvin should get a good stint on him.
