Illinois at Purdue MASTER DISCUSSION THREAD

A few thoughts....

Purdue has at times struggled with putting the hammer on teams this year and relaxing when up big (Also happened against Marquette, Arizona, Maryland, and even NW to some extent in that 1st half when that 10 point lead couldn't get pushed out).

Purdue was up 19 in 2nd half and Smith/Loyer miscommunicated on 3 on 2 fast break and the ball went out of bounds. From that point on there were several similar plays where guys weren't on the same page that allowed Illinois to get their heads up and creep back in.

It's nitpicking I know, but if the final 4 is the goal, this team figuring out how to keep those mental lapses from happening as the season moves on could loom large.

The call where DGL tripped on his foot when setting a screen and the other where an Illinois player ran into the other one and they called it on Zach…cmon now. He left at what, the 8 min mark in both halves? We were up 16 when he left in the 2nd…his fourth foul was legit, wish he could have made sure Guierrier missed tho.
I actually thought the trip was correct. Zach was too wide and got wider when DGL came past.

That was a foul, Zach's foot snuck out as he was preparing to roll toward the basket. A dumb foul, but a foul it was.

The problem is Edey probably fouled 4 times the whole game, and every single one got called. Meanwhile he gets murdered and only drew like 4 fouls.

Agreed on all points - 4th foul was not a good decision at all. He should have just gone straight up and tried to alter the shot.

Very good point. Then smith went for a shot and tried passing to furst at the last second and turned it over and then fired a really good pass to TKR, but he was not ready at all for it and another turnover occurred.

Peaky B will be ok. Still one of the best PGs out there, just wish he’d shoot the damn ball more instead of wanting to pass. Be more selfish.

Refs don’t call that type of foul when there’s incidental contact. He tripped on the foot.

Were his legs wider than shoulder width? Perhaps it was legit. I only saw one other call that was legitimate against Edey and one that I thought he got away with on a rebound. All in all, he probably should have had two fouls and should not have been in foul trouble. If he's in for his normal 30+, Purdue easily wins.

Loyer, Smith and Edey all had bad games and Purdue still won. Edey was taken out of the game by the refs and the Illinois coach who begged repeatedly for over the back calls. Smith faced guards all over six foot six and had trouble getting his shots off, or they were heavily contested. Loyer, just did a Loyer, the size might bothered him too.

But TKR was great, Gillis and Jones played well and Morton finally made a shot and his steal might have saved the game. Yes, it's only one steal, but what a time to do it. Colvin's time will come, but so far he has not been able to guard and would have been even more over matched in this game. BTW, Purdue won.

Yes, Morty had a good steal, but also toward the end bit on Hawkins three point pump fake and went in the air and then we bailed out Hawkins by fouling him with 1 on the shot clock. Either way tho, Morton didn’t contribute and we need more of that when he is in if he is going to continue to play 13 mins (they should be going to Heide and then a few to Colvin).

Editing my post. I meant DID*** not didn’t. Was typing to fast last night

A lot of fast breaks I keep yelling to slow down and take it back out. We have way to make misses, turnovers and blocked shots because we try to force it.

That was after Morty stole the ball the previous play, and the next time down completely stays in front of Domask and stops him. Then he has to move over to try and cover Jones's man on a switch (Hawkins) and yes bites on the fake. Morton did not contribute? He hit a three stopped Domask once, stole it another time. That's more than anyone else did on Domask. Heide could not play Domask at all, but did hit a three. Colvin would have been lost. If he was to play he could have been given a shot when they were up 21.

Loyer either plays great or terrible. No in between, he was abused again on defense ( which happens all the time ) and this is the worst I have seen him on offense, missed passes and horrible horse like flips or whatever they were when he drove. But yet Painter keeps playing him. And Miles can’t see the floor and Heide doesn’t get enough minutes, will be the one thing that stops us again- Painters stubbornness on change like the last how many years

And was definitely an offensive foul on Zach for the trip, foot was way wider than the shoulders

Smith also got out of control tonight trying to do too much, it’s his job to keep everything under control . But a win without playing well is still a win

I've said the exact same thing. You can tell 5 mins into the game how Loyer is going to be offensively. Defensively, he basically always sucks. At what point does one of the 10 coaches on that sideline figure out...hey he sucks tonight. Let's go to our next option. He shouldn't just be penciled in for 30-35 mins a game no matter what.

Loyer has played over 30 when he has been doing well in the game. He still needs to be out there as a threat to score and he is shooting 40% from 3. He can’t be perfect every game…he’ll Zach and Braden also had down games this last game, but who else you going to bring in for Loyer mins? Morton isn’t a threat at all on offense, and if you give him some of loyers mins, teams are going to start guarding him like we guarded Rodgers. I guess you couldn’t heide, but he isn’t too aggressive with his scoring just yet…maybe this would force him to be, but he doesn’t shoot it like Loyer does and we need that type of threat on the court. IMO, loyers offense outweighs his defensive holes. Sometimes he isn’t a liability like the Arizona game.

If Zach could have been in from 8 min mark to the 4 min mark in the second half, I’m confident to say the lead wouldn’t have gotten to under double digits. I believe we could have matched basket for basket with domask with Zach. Or at least close there to it and clock would have run more too.

However, that’s how the game goes sometimes so you need to adjust and it while it was nerve racking, we still pulled the game off and won when our top 3 scorers have off nights (for them).

I’m with you. Loyer is a difficult player to guard and puts a lot of pressure on defenses. His ability to drive (as well as shoot) has been a huge factor for Purdue all year. He couldn’t get his shots to drop last night, but Painter is right to stick with his best players.

I am loving what I see from Heide, but Heide is not much of a threat as a ball handler yet. I would like to see his minutes expand, but I understand why he remains the seventh or eighth man in the rotation.

Colvin just isn’t ready. Great potential, but I am not surprised that he doesn’t get minutes in a game like this. His time will come.

Morton just needs to get out of his shooting slump. If he can start hitting his three pointers with any consistency, he’ll be an important asset for Purdue down the stretch. I don’t know if it will happen though.

scoring off fast breaks is the biggest difference there is from last years team. And what makes this years team so much better. you have to put pressure on the other guys, us running does that.

Previous poster(s) mentioned it. We take the foot off the gas. I get basketball is a game of runs, but seems so predictable with us that were going to blow a big lead.
That was the #9 team in the country. That scored 200 pts their last 2 games.
But you thought we should rout them like they did that almost perfect first half?
That's unrealistic expectations.

They were up 21 and ended up scrambling to hold on. This seems to happen to this veteran team more than it should. They need to close out these games and put it away. Happy for the win even though it made me nervous.

Not going to draw fouls if he doesn’t get touches. No need to force the ball if the D gives you something you like, but not keeping Zach getting the ball much allowed Hawkins to play as long as he did. This has been two games where Zach maybe never saw the ball enough first half and then everyone watching knew he would see the ball second half. Must take what the D gives you, but also can’t lose sight of Zach either. Balancing act I know

Wasn't referring to just the IL game, and not even just this year. Maybe its just what sticks out to me, but we seem to have a habit of letting teams back in the game and making it close at the end.

He made the biggest defensive play of the game and hit a 3. To say he did not contribute is just wrong.
