I'll start it.
First off, good game guys! Defense - holy sh**. This season has a lot of the "Chicago Bears" vibes (minus the turnovers) which this community is not accustomed to. You guys are playing lights out, and Purdue nation appreciates watching you guys each and every possession. Thank you for keeping us in these battles.
Offense! We know there's going to be growing pains. Offense always starts with the HC -> QB -> everyone else. WRs, if you've been playing with high energy and getting open (but not getting visibility based on read progression or throws), don't give up! I would say with the last AOC possession it seemed like we were taking advantage of some of the inherent mismatches we had with our WRs and their defenders.
I think Plummer has "turnovers determine games" ingrained in his play lately -- and that's absolutely understandable. I just think that when we're playing at such a disadvantage with all of our starters out, you have to be willing to take risks and make mistakes. We're playing third string players vs their first stringers. If that was clear that it's okay to make mistakes to Plummer early on (namedly our first 2 drives), maybe it's a 14-0 game and the rest of the game plays out entirely differently. Who knows?
In any event, good job by this entire team. This was a "must win" game for us in our quest to 6. Looking at how some of these other B1G teams are performing lately, we can definitely make waves the rest of the year versus some of those teams that maybe we aren't favored to win. General concensus right now is that our defense will keep us in it, and that's a really exciting prospect for this community.
Exciting game -- defensive battle -- but we came through when it mattered.
Re the coaching -- our play calling in the ENTIRE first half was really reminiscent of how we played ND. It seemed like we played to lose gracefully over time. We didn't play to our strengths or call plays that really tested their defense. Maybe their defense was playing better than we saw (couch officials) via the TV cameras. Maybe a lot of that was a result of Plummer understanding "turnovers lose games". I get it; however, I don't think we can continue to rely on our defense to play lights out versus the better teams in our conference.
I'd say, let's continue to play offensively to OUR STRENGTHS, and force the other guys to adapt. Let's not try to play up or down to the opponent. Throw the ball downfield and roll that PI dice -- or maybe that defender trips, and you get an easy 7. I'd argue that maybe an early game INT might be OKAY? if our defense continues to play the way they have. The last 2 games have been really, really confusing based on how I think we expect our team to perform each and every week. We're just not nearly as deep at each key position to play the type of game plan that Brohm's been been calling over the last 2 games.
That's my 2c. Good win boys, I'll see you back here next week
