on D against the dribble wiht my concern being on O and handling the ball specifically against the 2-2-1 press. Can he have a breakout game soon? First 5 minutes are important...take the crowd out!!!
Newman is in a tough spot, when you watch NW and Audige can throw bricks up for a half and more but he stays in and made crucial shots at the end, Newman being a bench guy misses his first two shots he goes to the benchGreat game from him tonight. The other guards not so much
Braden was great, dont u think?Great game from him tonight. The other guards not so much
No he gets benched when he throws ball away and /or takes bad shot, not when he misses.Newman is in a tough spot, when you watch NW and Audige can throw bricks up for a half and more but he stays in and made crucial shots at the end, Newman being a bench guy misses his first two shots he goes to the bench
I agree. And better than Loyer. Here’s an unpopular but fact based take: Newman has been better than Morton the past few games on both ends of the court.

Loyer has been a liability in the last couple games.I agree. And better than Loyer.
I'd switch Gillis with Loyer. But yeah, I'd like to see the TKR/Edey combo.Let’s shake things up and start Smith, Newman, Gillis, Kauffman-Renn and Edey against Ohio State.
Did you put Braden in the "other guards"?Great game from him tonight. The other guards not so much
Those two are the most important players for Purdue because they are very different than the others...The lineup that kills us like every game is the lineup without Smith and Edey. Huge drop-off at both ends once those 2 are out.
Smith not so much?Great game from him tonight. The other guards not so much
If he had a better helicopter parenting situation like Sasha he would play more. But he isn't the answer like the guy that put him on the bench.on D against the dribble wiht my concern being on O and handling the ball specifically against the 2-2-1 press. Yep he and Newman rose to the occasionBraden was great, dont u think?
He and Newman were the only Gs who could handle the physical playSmith not so much?
People are taking about his strength being a liability - but his lack of lateral quickness is a bigger problem. That is harder to developLoyer has been a liability in the last couple games.
once last nite Braden broke press and took it directly to hole for layup. One other time , we broke it quick and got ball to Edey and he took an unbalanced shot with no rebounding in sight and that did not work well for us.When you break a press, defense is out of position. Purdue never tries to take advantage of that situation. The whole team seems to be afraid to take a shot except Edey.
Newman has played fine defense for the limited minutes he’s been in. He’s had a couple of steals, blocks, and deflections. I like Ethan Morton a lot, but the narrative that he’s Purdue’s next lockdown defender is a bit of a myth. He gave up the game winner to Cam Spencer for Rutgers by overhelping and he couldn’t stay with Hood-Schifino at Indiana, Buie at Northwestern and Young last night. Brandon doesn’t see the floor enough to make the negative impact some of you seem to think he does.Difference is Loyer is a great shooting, crafty, freshman guard that needs strength. Brandon is a 4th yr junior that's shoots it ok, has the strength but can't stay in front of his man on D.
Well when the first two shots are both out of the flow jacks, yeh he gets to sit. We see it all season and some of you never see it.Newman is in a tough spot, when you watch NW and Audige can throw bricks up for a half and more but he stays in and made crucial shots at the end, Newman being a bench guy misses his first two shots he goes to the bench
His quickness will get better when he is stronger.People are taking about his strength being a liability - but his lack of lateral quickness is a bigger problem. That is harder to develop
Nothing fact based about it unless you'd care to tell us who made you the arbiter of hoops play analysis. Here’s an unpopular but fact based take: Newman has been better than Morton the past few games on both ends of the court.
Agreed. I like Morton, but a lot of guys on here have him on pedestal...kind of like Hunter from years before.Newman has played fine defense for the limited minutes he’s been in. Agreed. Need a line up shake up. At least have guys out there that are looking to score.Newman looked good last night, might be time to see more of him and Gillis going forward. Purdue can’t have 2 starters not scoring, puts too much pressure on the Frosh and Zach.
Wonder if the season's physicality has finally taken it's toll on Loyer. He's somewhat slender in build; hitting the proverbial "freshman wall."Newman looked good last night, might be time to see more of him and Gillis going forward. You say Brandon doesn't see the floor enough to make the negative impact some of us think. I would trust CMP to make this assumption and it's pretty clear what he see's and does his plus/negative on each player. I guess, i'm lost on why some feel he's a good defender. I watched that game and it appeared to me he got beat multiple times on the dribble drive because his lateral defense just isn't that fast....then the typical foul. I know Fletch had a bad game as well, but his positioning on defense is better.....just isn't big enough.Newman has played fine defense for the limited minutes he’s been in. I’m not saying it’s some night and day difference that Newman is a way better defender. I’m simply saying that somehow there’s this “legend of Morton’s defense” narrative among many Purdue fans and I just don’t see it. This season when Newman has come in and guarded the same guy Morton was guarding, there is not a drastic drop off in defense or increase in that person scoring. (Especially against Sensabaugh of OSU and Pickett of PSU, Hood-Schifino at IU). Look at their defensive stats for the last two games (steals and blocks), they’re pretty close. Newman has been a solid rebounder all season. He hasn’t turned it over in the last two games. So, maybe letting Brandon get a start and get going, get a feeling for the game might not be so bad. We some some games as a freshman when he started and did well. At this point, trading a little bit of defense for any offense seems like a good idea. Newman is a streaky player so maybe let’s try to get him on a hot streak. Get him going toward the basket. He had a couple of nice drives (he got fouled a couple of times) and sank a mid range pull-up. Perhaps with a little more consistency and not quite as short of a leash, he becomes the weapon he is capable of being. I’d rather have a guy who is still confident to keep putting up good shots than guys who give them up because they’re scared to shoot. You say Brandon doesn't see the floor enough to make the negative impact some of us think. As for Morton he see's the floor because it's about positioning himself and the way he helps limit fouls on Zach. If you get beat on the dribble drive your going to get Zach into foul trouble eventually.
Completely agree with you especially on the Morton legendary status.I’m not saying it’s some night and day difference that Newman is a way better defender. Maybe I am wrong, hell, this a fan forum full of all sorts of opinions. One thing is clear though, that the offense isn’t there the last couple of games. Something has to be done to jumpstart that.
good post but usually at this time of the year , the coach goes w/ his best 8 and not alot of lineup changes. Those are usually done and early in the season and a coach gets to see what worksI’m not saying it’s some night and day difference that Newman is a way better defender. Reason being their the only ones on the team that can get their own shotsThose two are the most important players for Purdue because they are very different than the others...
