I don't like this Painter quote

From: http://espn.go.com/ncb/recap?gameId=400813806

"Hopefully, A.J. can learn from this and continue to take care of his business," Painter said.

Makes it sound like the benching could reoccur. Hopefully AJ learned and keeps his act together. Haas is a beast, but Purdue is way better rotating between Haas and AJ.
He seemed fine with the team/coaches last night ... joking and being part of things. We probably will never know what happened (and really it's not our business), so it seems like it was some personal issue AJ had going on.

Like you, I hope he has learned his lesson and moves onward and upward.

I don't read into it that much. I think his statement is a given whether he says it or not. He could say that for anyone who has had a timeout.

I was thinking about this last night, and my best guess is that AJs grades were slipping. It makes sense that Painter would hold him out of the early games until he could get them back up. And it also makes sense that Painter is being really vague and hush hush because he wouldn't want to embarrass AJ by talking about it.

Reason doesn't really matter as long as MP gets together with the team that drafts AJ and his agent and figures out how much $$ he needs to kick in to make up for all that AJ lost by being benched by the mean old coach!!!

Another thing that supports my academic hypothesis is that Painter said the team was making sure AJ had the help he needed to work through the issues. If it was just an internal rule violation, he wouldn't need help.

Because Federal Law prohibits discussing such things.

No offense, but I don't think that's a very good guess. How exactly would you rectify a bad grade situation over a period of 3 games and 8 or 9 days? If he did poorly in a summer course, he couldn't re-take it and get a better grade in a week and a half. If it were grades or other academic non-compliance, etc., it would make much more sense that he would have been held out until the semester turned over because that's when grade adjustments would be finalized and there would be "clean state" so to speak for the next semester.

It seems much more likely that he broke a team rule and/or something of a non-academic matter. And based on the way Painter has described himself as being "disappointed" and AJ needing to "take care of his business", it would also appear likely that it was an action or behavior that AJ chose, as opposed to something out of his control that just happened to him. i.e. it is much more likely to be an error in his judgment to do or not do something, and far less likely that a car drove past him on a rainy day, splashed his clothes, and forced him to be late to a team luncheon because he ran home to change clothes first.

It doesn't matter what it was. He's done the time for the crime and now it's time to play on.

It doesn't bother me one bit. At this stage in their relationship, Painter is fully aware of who AJ is and how to motivate him. Conversely, I am sure AJ is well aware that Coach Painter wants the best for him, and Purdue. With AJ, I am fine with whatever he and Painter are doing.

I forgot where I heard it but it was on a broadcast and I think was even an article on GBI at one point.
What I remember is them saying it didn't affect his academic eligibility nor was he suspended. But Painter still could have made him sit until he had handed in all his assignments that were late. In any event, it's over and you and I have zero problems I'm sure.

Remember from last year that Haas and AJ seemed like interchangeable parts in non conference, but when conference play started, AJ was clearly superior due to his athleticism and shot blocking. I think we will see the same thing this year.

I just don't like that Painter isn't starting him. Did the same thing last year and we kept losing. I don't want to wait till when we hit a brick wall to start AJ. Start the best player now.

How about all you Painter bitchers go out and get your own team and run it your way. AJ hasn't done a thing yet to automatically start. Haas has put in the work and is very much improved and apparently "took care of things" in the offseason. He deserves the start until AJ earns it. Thankfully we're not on the "star system" yet.

One of the reasons last year he brought him off the bench as AJ had a tendency to foul quickly within the 1st minute of the game. Painter thought Haas started better for a short stretch and gave AJ a better opp coming in at the 16:00 mark.
This year, I can't say certainty that Haas shouldn't be starting, the guy is playing great. He's even hitting free throws, AJ is a better shot blocker but I don't think there's a huge discrepancy or drop off between them

To your point BinL, last night, I Haas - 19 minutes (0 fouls); AJH - 15 minutes (2 fouls). I do recall AJH picking up a quick foul without much contact on a driving ball-handler toward the baseline.

Now, I'll qualify this that it's an extremely small sample size with an opponent without much size, and it's no knock on AJH.....I thought he was fine and had a couple of nice blocks and moves at the rim. I just think CMP might bring him along just a little like this in the non-conference similar to the way last year went until AJH finds his footing early on in games. Some of this becomes paralysis from analysis......he could end up starting tomorrow.

Regardless, Purdue has something it hasn't had very often, quality depth and size in the front-court. Remember the days (not that long ago) when you'd have to be on pins and needles if AJH or JaJuan Johnson picked up two quick fouls? Up-hill battle the rest of the game.

There are three types of piss tests: NCAA, Conference, and school sponsored.

Schools have to release information on failed NCAA and Conference piss tests, but don't have to release any information about their own.

A failed piss test at Purdue has typically been 10% of your season, rounding down. So 1 football game or 3 basketball games.

Keep in mind it could very easily have been academic. I have no idea. The only people who do know are Painter and AJ, but we, as a fan base, should probably just let it go.

But last night AJ wasn't the best....Haas was. Not dissing AJ, but everyone needs to earn their starting position. In my opinion Haas has at the moment. Doesn't mean it won't change, and not like AJ didn't get any play time.

Quick thoughts about Painter/Hammons…

Painter wants to win. Painter wants Hammons to succeed. It behooves Painter for Hammons to play and for Hammons to have success. Hammons not playing and not having success both hurts the team in the short term and hurts Hammons in the long term.

Therefore…

It stands to reason that Painter must have valid reasons for not playing Hammons until last night. Painter has absolutely nothing to gain from sitting him without reasonable cause.

Unless you think Painter is just a cruel, sadistic individual who is bent on hurting this year's team and Hammons's future, there is no other logical reason for Painter to sit Hammons.

As for the why…have you ever considered that Painter might be helping Hammons and/or the program by not divulging the reasons?

I support both Painter and Hammons and believe the situation will be resolved. I also think this team is a potential juggernaut.

Not trying to argue here but AJ is a top 5 player in the conference. The defense was a lot better with AJ on the floor. Offense doesn't matter as much to me at this point. Our walk ons could compete with the teams we just played .

I think the mystery of the "business to take care of" was something like this. AJ was to represent PU Basketball by appearing at some local school or function and showed of late and/or was unprepared. I'm thinking the business to take care of was to make up for this transgression of poorly representing PU.
