I don’t know what to think

Look at this honestly. Our so called role players are fine , Miles, Cam , Harris and Cox played well. It’s our leaders Braden, KR and Fletch who have been really struggling. I believe it’s because of the minutes and stress we put on these 3. Renn is forcing everything, Loyer is playing terrible on ball defense and when not hitting his shots is a liability. And Braden is just plain tired, his burst isn’t there and he’s short on his shots which means tires legs. Paint has to accept the blame because he didn’t develop a bench when he needed to. Also we need a scoring 4 man , I would start Cam and bring Caleb off the bench
The box score was telling - I couldn't watch because I value my sleep. How can 20 minutes and no points and 1 assist be called played well? Harris or Colvin should be starting imo. Loyer had no points from the field just from the line. We will never win a game with him starting and that stat line. Getting blown out is a terrible look leading up to selection Sunday. It wasn't even close at the end. We need to make getting assists to others besides just TKR a priority. Our magical offense has looked too predictable lately. As far as Smith being our floor general and outside threat that is fine when he is fresh and crushing it from three but when he isn't others need to bring their A game to make up for it. I hope Jacobsen can play more like a sophomore next year because we are going to need him playing his best if we are going to do anything special next year. Maybe we can still make a run in the NCAA tourney this year if we get some good matchups but my hopes are fading. Sorry to be so negative...

Yea. TKR is by no means any sort of defensive post presence. Jacobsen would have definitely helped there. Painter definitely needed to quit the Berg train very early and went to Burgess to try and get him more ready.
What is the "Berg train"? Did Berg get big minutes during the year that I missed??

The role players, the guys we’ve all been disappointed in all season, start doing what we want. And this is over the course of several games. It seems to be a trend. But the team seems to be worse. I mean this does not look like a good team at all. I just don’t get it, with the 2 top guys we have, it should be better than what we’re watching. I get that we are limited defensively but come on.
Not just limited. We’re terrible defending the rim and can’t keep opposing guards out if the paint

Time to start utilizing nil and loading up on more talent. Our incoming class next year is one unranked 3 star. I’m not expecting us to recruit like duke, but c’mon man….

Well it really didn't become a blowout until very close to the end. It was 72-61 with 5 minutes left. You're certainly not going to pull him then. So what are you going to get, 2 minutes of rest when it was 80-64? At that point they weren't playing hard anymore anyway.
Part of the problem is we never pull Smith. Thus why he is pretty clearly running on empty.

BTT is the perfect time to start figuring out how to give him 5-10 minutes of rest and who runs the show in his absence.

I don't agree because I don't think you reinvent the wheel right before the NCAA. It needed to be done in December.

We were bad on offense last nite, because we did not make shots. Even after last nite our offense is ranked #10 in nation on offense.

I do think Purdue could do a few different things on O that would be of value, but yes Purdue missed a lot of shots they normally make and Michigan probably made some shots they normally miss.

Putting the ball in the bucket or not can take opinions to the edge

The biggest problem was expectations. We watched what Loyer and Smith could do as true freshmen. Both Myles and Harris had much higher rankings than Smith and Loyer had coming out of high school. The expectation was based on their high rankings, their contributions would come close to the contributions smith and Loyer made as freshman. Myles was kind of penciled in to be our starter at the three at the beginning of the year. But he was beaten out by Cox. As a result, none of cox, Myles or Heros contributed to the level of their hype coming out of high school. A lot more was expected from them.

The other big issue was the catchings decommitment. If he had decommited earlier, Painter probably would not have recruited and signed Cox. Painter would most likely have recruited and signed another big man or swing. And Painter would possibly signed a transfer. The timing of Catchings decision made it impossible for Painter to be able to recruit another big man from high school or the portal.

And as expectations go, Catchings may have started or at least played the minutes Furst played and offered another offensive weapon.

Yes Edey. Was a huge loss, But a team projected to include Smith, tkr, Loyer catchings and Jacobsen. Would have been a top 10 team without Edey! .

There’s an underlying reason/problem tied to not pulling Braden. Our entire offensive existence is tied to Smith and his fairly unique passing skillset and interaction with TKR. The plays that are being run depend on that ability to large extent. We’ve hung our hat mainly on an ability for those two to be effective. Teams have had an entire season of film to plan to disrupt what we depend on. If smith comes out the rest of the team needs to run a different offense which I’m not sure that’s what’s happening with the play calling . Doesn’t appear we shift into off ball movement and an attempt to get the other guys more engaged in setting back screens and in rotation off the ball. Part of the difficulty of painter’s scheme of running things for the top 2 and a little for the 3 rd guy and the other two taking the occasional shot that comes their way.
I think both Cox and Harris are talented and are capable of running an offense but neither likely the passer that Braden is. I also think that resting Smith more throughout the season would have been beneficial…

Open shots have been available in abundance throughout this malaise Purdue finds itself in now…

When we were flying high and in the Top 10, most of those absolutely makeable looks were going in.

Those shots are no longer going in now— plain and simple.

IMO you can’t oversell CMP’s observation of how much harder it is to properly set the defense off a missed shot.
Abolutely. We got a LOT of great shots yesterday. Very few went down. Mostly hit the front of the rim ... tired legs. All a coach can do is create great shots... up to the players to get them to fall.

So getting him six extra minutes a game spread across two halves is reinventing the wheel?

Those three minutes each half changes our entire team?

You can't possibly believe that.
If you do it now, yes. If you did it all year long, no. I do believe that. The team is too reliant on 3 and 4. It's too late to try something new, and sitting 6 minutes would put people in positions that they're not used to for longer periods of time.

I frankly thought the offense-defense with Berg last night was the wrong move, despite getting the desired effect of keeping TKR out of foul trouble.

agree

Could be my gold and black glasses, but I think Colvin is getting there. It gives me some hope for next week and even more for next year.
Colvin was a deer in headlights against Michigan constantly out of position and forced to foul.
