Not sure what to take away from Luke beating Braylen Mullins again. First time he scored 38 Mt. Vernon beat Mullins and his Greenfield team. Then he dropped 36 last night vs Mullins 18 yes that is twice as much. Make no mistake about it Mullins is A legit 5 star and a deserving Mr.BB. The two spent the night beating the hell out of each other and drawing fouls on one another with Ertel making 15 of 15 free throws the only way to stop Luke seemed to be fouling him which didn't work. He made 5 of his 7 three pointers. His defense was disruptive all game long and served to force Mullins into taking many off-balance shots. This was yet another statement game from Luke his 36 points is a record for a junior All Star. I covered this briefly before, but Luke IMO is not a PG he is a scoring guard who can play the point. They listed him at 6'3 and Mullins at 6'5 first of all I would seriously question the 6'3 he looked much smaller matched up with Mullins. Size matters until it doesn't for the second game in a row Luke had 9 rebounds. I missed this one by a mile a year ago when he committed, I thought he would be a nice bench player WRONG! What he is IMO is a player you build a team around. Kid is as physical as any guard I have covered period. While he takes a lot of shots he rarely forces anything they are good shots for him he made 55% from the floor this past HS season. Carsen Edwards is who I compare him to now he isn't as athletic, but he hunts his offense much like Carsen and is capable of putting up Carsen type numbers every game. What the hell does Painter see that few others can? Seriously What? When he was offered, he was a nice role player for Indiana Elite playing up a year mainly feeding the other four players. In no way did his game get you excited. Fast forward a year and the kid is clearly the best player in Indiana regardless of class. I follow recruiting closer than most, and I have no clue what he could have seen over a year ago. He couldn't have predicted this kind of success, could he? In Painter we trust! I know ratings are based on pro potential which right now is a long shot for him, but I wouldn't rule it out. I made the mistake of undervaluing him a year ago that won't happen again.

He is only going to get better! Hope it translates well to the next level!

Matt Painter is a time traveler. He has come back in time to rewrite the original Purdue basketball history. It is best to not question him. This board has often come close to interrupting the space/time continuum. And believe me. You don’t want to do that.

Old Boiler: if you see Ertel as more of a shooting guard, than a point guard, who do you see as our next future PG? Mayer?

Cox, Harris, Kinney, or Mayer. We should be loaded with solid people at that position. Kinney is scheduled to visit on January 20th for a home game.
I fear Kinney will be signing with Louisville and our current guards may scare him off. Especially how good Ertel is looking and if Mayer is as good as he supposed to be…not sure he would want to commit here

There are a lot of good reasons to sign here even though we have good depth at his positon. First is the fact we have good depth. Other talented people competing for minutes will make him tougher and smarter and more focused and hungry. At least it should or we dont want him.

Maybe he has integrity and wants to get a good education and not be on tabloid headlines for anything other than on court performance. Painter and Keady before him are some of only a few who take every step with integrity. Good programs attract good people. Winning programs attract winners. We have both, anyone with half a brain should want to come here.

All good points. However, He’s projected as a one done and has signed with adidas…also from Kentucky.

Would be huge if he did come to Purdue.

Thanks for these great write ups, OG OB. :) THIS is why I joined these boards oh so many years ago, to get insight on players and the games so I could better understand and enjoy both.

I think it almost always starts with intangibles for Matt and staff. They've made it clear in the past that they put value on kids that win at every level they play at. Competitiveness and never say die seems a given in a Painter recruit. If you show that right away and then develop at a pace that intrigues you have their interest. Now factor in the recent winning that has more and more "talented" guys showing at least some interest and you get where they are right now. I would say Braden and maybe Ertel show that Coach values some qualities more than the NBA does.

I’ve seen a couple of analysts saying Ertel will skyrocket in the rankings because of how well he is playing right now. Curious what that means but Painter got in early and has a serious killer.

Purdue is still known for our big men but we are going to become the same for guards.

I'd include toughness, leadership and effort as things common to the top guards under Painter. As I've said before I see Ertel as having all of those traits, kind of like Chris Kramer with much better scoring/shooting.

Yeah, I heard Brian mention that on Saturday simulcast he's going to NBA top 100 camp. He's no longer under the radar. If he plays there the way he has been he will shoot up even higher.

Would be great for a committed recruit to show out there on that stage and hopefully sway some other '26 recruits who are close to a decision to jump on board with him.

Yeah for sure. Hope he gets Anthony Thompson to sign here (the other guy in the graphic as you can see).

Hope Luke stays committed…I believe he should/will but never know what $$$ is thrown at him by other schools that are desperate 😂

trying to get more commentary but sounds like Ertel made an impression at this event.

Smooooth......

I know for sure he scored 16 in one of the scrimmages. Believe he has another one tipping off soon.

Kid is gonna rocket up the rankings. Only downside for him is he already committed to Purdue 😂

What is the current market determination of the Purdue recruiting discount? 12.5 spots?

He's put on some muscle compared to his high school videos.

Had to go to OT to beat Winslow in game 3. Luke looked like the best ballhandler on the floor. Typical All Star game with black hole 3s by both teams. Dylan Mingo was the star for Thomas but lost the ball several times against pressure D. Sayon Keita (7 footer) for Winslow appeared to be the best player on either team. Ertel was subbed in late in regulation and took the ball full court for a layup. Kinda cool that he's playing for 5'9" Isaiah Thomas.
