How many games needed to lose to switch QB's this yr?

Hadnt really considered that 'exciting' element, but remember how refreshing that felt when Brees was an underclassman.

I do think it hurts almost all qbs to play them their freshman and even redshirt freshman year. Id rather watch a bad year of qb between Elting and AA (although I think either or both could play good if properly managed) than watch Blough play well for a few weeks and turn into Etling or AA. I wouldnt mind lengthening Haz's leash at all for that.

I am simply enjoying great conversation on here again where dissenting opinions aren't met with ridiculous name calling. It is nice to see actual discussion and people making points and counter points and then taking in another's points. Too bad our government can't work this way!

Purdue football has beat me down to the point where I used to come down or dedicate time to watch on TV, they would lose (usually in a heart breaker) and I would be mopey until Tuesday. New attitude, hate to say it, "if they don't win its a shame!" I have lowered expectations so much... I still do get kicked in the teeth. I bought in to the "Darrell Hazell Era" and the pep rally on the way to Cincinnati, then saw us just get throttled on TV. Then last year I assumed everything Purdue releases is propaganda and I did not buy into a thing. We lost a game against Wisconsin where we competed for 3 quarters and I thought, "Oh wow, we could beat Northwestern, get the Bucket, then ride into 2015 5-7 and make a bowl game." I read game stories all week. I bought my tickets. I drove down on a damp, cold, day. And I saw Purdue fail to compete. I bought the hype again and got toasted. This year I assume 4-8. I think it handcuffs the program which is bad. You cannot extend the coach after a combined 8-28, but we are Purdue and cannot afford to fire him either. He will have to make staff changes and I think this TE coach is his security blanket. It will be hard if he changes staff to bring in people on a possible lame duck run. If he does change coordinators, he gives the job to Malone who has a good resume and would allow some continuity. Then 2016 becomes do or die for DH and it does not get much easier. 9 conference games with a NC of EKU, Cincinnati (tough), and Nevada (tough). If we go into B1G play in 2016 1-2 it could be a tough go. Beat road apples IU and Illinois, 3-2. Maryland, Nebraska, Penn State, especially 2/3 on the road puts us at 3-5. Need to go 3-1 against Iowa, Minnesota, Northwestern, and Wisconsin. I think Wisconsin will start on a down swing. All those teams are average squads but little margin for error. I think 6-6 would be a ceiling and a bad bowl and another nice payday for DH. 2017 could be good if he can get 2 weak links to play NC- we have Missouri @ Missouri. Ouch.

I dont know why everyone says we cant afford to fire him. Keeping him costs money too, both real and opportunity costs.

I think Burke and co. have ridden the 'operate in the black in all costs' for as long as they can. They are leaning on some nest egg the athletic department has and Burke cant keep doing that without something fundamental changing unless Haz comes through on an 8 win season somehow. I would love to see Burke fired, Tiller gave him a get out of jail free card and he threw it away. I would more importantly like to see the university take a bigger interest in Football and MBB

Legitimately, who would Purdue hire, that could do the job quicker than Hazell, than if he was fired after 3 seasons of a 5 year contract. I don't know of many lined up outside of Ross-Aide to come coach, not to even mention the buyout costs. Let the guy work his contract a little more than that. Progress is required though.

Wasn't there a rumor that Kevin Sumlin contacted Burke at some point when it was becoming obvious Hope wasn't going to cut it and Burke said he needed more HC experience? Then, a year later, he was hired by A&M and that ended up being Hope's last season? If that's the case and that is true, Burke should have been let go at that point due to making one of the dumbest decisions ever in B1G coaching hires history.

I dont know anything about Sumlin, but just because Purdue's not in a great place right now doesnt mean they should be content to tred water. Plenty of good coaches get hired by smaller schools all the time.

If Burke honestly feels Hazell gives him the best shot to win now, then keeping him is right. If he doesnt feel that way and keeps him anyway hes a moron.

This is just my opinion, but I do live in College Station...

Sumlin is going to have to perform. A&M's 480 million dollar renovated stadium opens for business this fall, and 110K aggie butts in those seats are not going to be happy unless A&M competes for SEC championships and National Championships. Sumlin came close the first year they were in the SEC, but that was partly the result of Manzel, and a new offensive scheme in the SEC. A&M has regressed since then.

When aggie faithful want a new coach; they pony up the cash and get a new coach, no matter how much it costs....

CS,

They arent humbled for having sucked for so long? I would expect a lot too with those kind of resources, but I would think Sumlin has at least this next year guaranteed.

Although, I do agree that there was a decided advantage of having Manziel in a new system. Most of their plays that year that I saw (most of two or three games) wasnt like they performed uberly well, more like the opponent was usually out of position/surprised.

I'd love to have Sumlin back, but dont think it will happen even if he gets fired.

I don't trust Morgan to hire the next coach. Basically as long as Morgan is here, keep Hazell here. I don't want Morgan to make any more hires. He inherited Colletto and Keady. Keady was great... until about 2000 so he let him hang on about 4-5 years too long. Part of that is GK did not want to go. Some of the money people did not want him to go. But there is a happy medium somewhere, somehow, so you can push a guy out. He had a chance then to hire Bruce Webber and I guess we have Webber 2.0 in Matt Painter so that hire worked but we had to sit through some bad teams as a result.

Colletto was not a great coach on game day. I think he proved he could recruit, just not develop and played a lot of dudes out of position. Joe Tiller was an excellent hire. He was also Morgan's third choice behind Bob Davie (who could not win at ND) and Glenn Mason (who wanted too much money). So Joe Tiller was also an accidental hire. Danny Hope was a disaster and if you remember the other succession options, Jay Norvell never got a shot anywhere else and is still a position coach. Paul Chryst is only in year 4 and is a .500 coach. Danny Hope, wow. I think Morgan can't think for himself so tries to make his decisions look good by "consulting" with people. Well Darrell Hazell was endorsed by Ryan Grigson and Jim Tressel and holy cow. Morgan does have an ego and does not like people who question him or appear bigger than he is. That is why Sumlin and to a lesser extent Spack were never hired... they would not bow down to the little man in the IAF.

Wow, I dont see it like that at all.

Spack was never hired because his defenses post 04 were flat terrible. Plus he kept saying stuff like "Its not my fault" and "I'm doing the best job coaching I have ever done". He took himself out. I'd be surprised if Sumlin was ever willing to come here. Hes said some pretty strong statements about preferring the southern US.

I dont fault Burke for his hires, and would hope anyone would hire a team to pick a guy. Its largely a guessing game unless you have an absolutely premier guy; which Purdue doesnt. I also dont give him much credit for Painter/Tiller because Purdue brought them in more than Burke did. What I do fault him for is putting teams in a position to succeed. In that regard, he does a terrible job. Inferior spending on everything leads to inferior results. Agree he is too loyal to individuals (Keady, Tiller, etc.), but Im not sure either of them were ever the problem and it wasnt about severly outdated facilities and stadium/arenas.

If hes letting anyone slide, its himself imo. Rather than really take a stand and attempt to get things where he has already acknowledged they need to go, hes content to randomly mention it every 18 months and collect his 500k a year so 19 year olds can play with balls.

Dude's got it made.

EDIT: I do though, wholeheartedly agree that something more fundamental has to change at Purdue before we can expect things to get better.

LOL. Humble is the last way to describe an aggie...

They did get a new defensive coordinator, so that buys him some time. He has also been winning the recruiting war in Texas; but as UT regains its cache, I don't think that will last. If Strong gets into the playoffs before Sumlin, lookout below!

They had to tear it down because the program was broken to the base of its culture. Winning became happy to get 6 wins and a bowl. We had about a decade of mediocrity and even our best year with Tiller we lucked into a rose bowl loss by tying and being the biggest loser. Think about that. We only went to the rose bowl because it had been the longest for us out of the 3 way tie if I remember correctly.

We also beat the other two teams that tied with us so we did have the tiebreaker if such a thing existed.
