Houston vs. Purdue: MASTER DISCUSSION THREAD

To be honest, if Braden / Kaufman played like they normally do, we win by 10+
TKR was playing against some of the best big men in the country and he was doing it without help. The help came with Heide forcing their 3 out but when Caleb was there he was double teamed everytime. Braden just backed out of the hedge and wasn’t really hunting his own shot. I thought he could have been more aggressive but understand not taking bad shots

Smith carved up the best defense in the land. He was masterful in doing so. Most assists by an individual vs Houston all year. And maybe the last 5 (only checked this year).

They tried to take it out of his hands but he still made the right decision and others hit shots.

Now we focus on bringing the team back and adding two pieces for next year.

I’m just saying if they made one more bucket, we would’ve won. Not a knock on either player or anything like that
Sure. From anyone. Houston's gameplan was to take our best players out and they did from the scoring aspects. For as well as Heide and Colvin played in the 2nd half, if they had made a couple more jumpers in the first, it's a different game.

Smith and TKR played great considering what they were going up against.

I agree with you. Just sucks …. Ugh

Braden played awesome and so did TKR. The Houston defense is damn good. And yeah, if either one hits one more shot, it’s a diff story. Hopefully they got a bad taste in their mouth and they’ll come back next year for a shot at the NC
I actually agree with you on the team playing well, but Here's my thought about one thing that might have cost us more than anything. I always talk about the little things that can cost you a win or prevent a loss. TKR's time out call while on the floor early in the second half didn't allow us to have one late in the game. I know you teach your players to do just what he did and at the time I was glad he did, but looking back it took away options for CMP, especially at the end.

I DONT WANT TO HEAR ANYMORE LOYER BS OR BS ABOUT HEIDE OR COLVIN.

Loyer kept us in this game in the first half and clearly Sampson shut it off in the 2nd half.

Heide with HUGE 3s and Colvin drove and had two big time pull ups and a huge 3.

TKR and Braden were amazing as well.

This one sucks but was amazing to see us play our best ball all year. Hope they’re all back for one last run next year.
You can't forget Cox either. Wish he'd have shot more.

Very interesting and telling stat - and came up in Painter's press conference. Purdue had 11 second half FG's - Smith had 11 assists - Ergo, Smith assisted on every one of them.

The best damn PG in the land!

We need to keep him and the core 8 at all costs.

If Cryer had his "normal" game, Houston wins by 10+......you could play the what if's back and forth all day, though. There's another team out there that's pretty damn good and has something to do with it.

Bottom line, to me, the two biggest factors - Purdue just didn't quite get enough loose balls and didn't hit enough on opportunities - not anyway saying that's a choke or they played poorly.....they didn't. Houston made more winning plays.

First thing Painter said and repeated it - proud of his guys for the effort - he knows that's what you need.....it doesn't assure a win/successful outcome, but it's absolutely a requirement. He's appreciative of what they gave him - and that's a good sign going forward. That's not to say be happy with moral victories - but he also knows the journey is not over.....next season starts soon. And you HAVE to look forward.

Disappointed for those players and coaches because you know what it means to them.....but hey, for an alum like me I have to applaud the effort win or lose.......they will be better for it......on and off the court. One other thing - out of the 16 final teams - Purdue was probably 15th or 16th in physicality - and they just went toe-to-toe.....man-to-man with one of the most physical teams......and they withstood it and were able to compete. Yeah, they came up agonizingly short.......but they should be able to reflect and learn from that. Some losses stunt your growth or are very difficult to recover from.......some help you in the long run.

I liked a lot of subtle things I saw......before, during, and after the game. And candidly, that hasn't always been the case.

We'll see what happens.

Props to a good Boiler team. Loyer, Smith, Cox, TKR, and Heide and Myles deserve praise for their efforts. Also, Berg who didn't play long, but altered at least two shots while he was in.

If Paint can land two players out of the portal, a big that can rebound and a quick point guard who can play defense and shoot. Smith needs some rest during the game.

And CMP did a very solid coaching job this year
We have Cox and Harris to backup Smith, need an enforcer to rebound and guard rim.

FYI the play was for Cryer. The inbounder saw Smih go after Cryer who was freed by the screen and made the pass, got himself in a spot to receive the ball for a layup, his teamate saw it, made the right pass and Purdue did not rotate, game over. Simple as that. Purdue played with heart and almost pulled if off. If they keep their players and add a good piece or two next year could be fun.
looked like an illegal screen too

If they didn't call the push-off, they're certainly not calling an illegal screen in that situation. I didn't notice it though.
There’s a picture floating around showing it. No way he’s set when contacting CJ Cox. TKR picked up about 20 fouls this season for less.

Colvin isn't in Smith's zip code. Keep your man crush on him 👨‍❤️‍👨 but admit we still need someone who can give him a legit breather and protection in case he gets hurt. Cox will be good, but he's not in Smith's league either.
Never said that.

And I’d say guard is our third priority. Smith is playing 35+ next year, whether you like it not. So we don’t need anyone in his league…and those guys that are in his league, aren’t transferring somewhere to play only 5 min a game.

CJ will be a good ball handler and I bet west can give a few mins too if needed.

West will be good if he doesn’t redshirt.
