Seems like the settlement may not count current walk-ons from the 105 roster limits. Seems like we had a handful of walk-ons retained and I’m assuming this change will allow staff to take on more walk-ons (any scholarship or aid above 85 counts towards our revenue sharing bucket). Saw we got the new RB and an OL as walk-ons right after this. I also expect it means more walk-ons will make the team which is the true intent of the settlement revision.

I thought the result of all of this was going to reduce walk-ons in both sports? Because there's a roster cap now, and more of them are going to go to scholarship athletes. No? I think there's a lot of misinformation out there.

It was to put caps on rosters so teams don’t just pay walk-ons and effectively circumvent the roster limits. For most schools, no more scholarships are going to athletes because any new scholarship/aid (I.e. beyond 13 for basketball and 85 for football) count against the $21m revenue sharing limit. The settlement was challenged and now they are likely going to pass that current walk-ons that are in jeopardy of being cut due to roster limits can be designated as such and are grandfathered in.

Basketball is 15 now.

The rule is to simply keep schools from having 85 scholies and unlimited “walk ons” they compensate through cash but don’t give academic aid to.

Yes, walking will be a thing of the past very soon.

Nor really the cap got rejected by the judge. It’s likely going to be raised to allow current walk-ons to be grandfathered in. I don’t think Purdue will have more than 15. Indiana can’t because they don’t have anyone left lol. Football will most certainly have more than 105.
