Assuming the worst (a big if right now) and CJB leaves, what would people think about Holt being the next head coach? Not saying forgo a coaching search but what are your thoughts if he made the cut? Does it help preserve a lot of the recruiting class/momentum? Is he ready? I’m sure CJB would be very happy for his friend to get such a promotion and I’d imagine they’d be good to one another on the recruiting trail.

Need an offensive minded coach who likes to sling the ball around, takes risks, Brohm-esque, to succeed here. Not sure if Holt is that guy, but I would sure love to keep him as DC no matter what.

I’d assume Holt will follow CJB as a Def Coordinator, but a promotion to head coach would be readily supported by CJB. Would a good Off Coordinator help shore that up? A promotion within the Brohm coaching tree perhaps? I’m thinking there is some value (don’t know how much) in trying to retain recruits with some continuity, but only if Holt is deemed the best choice after a thorough coaching search.

No thanks, welcome to stay as DC

Think he was a HC at Idaho. Apparently it didn't work out for him:
Following the 2003 season, Tom Cable was fired after four seasons at Idaho, the first Vandals head coach in 22 years to be dismissed. Holt returned to the Palouse and was hired as the head coach,[4][5] signing a four-year contract at $205,000 per year.[6] The Vandals went 3–9 in 2004 in their last season in the Sun Belt Conference and 2–9 in 2005, their first season in the WAC.[7]

During his short tenure at Idaho, a game was scheduled between the Vandals and his former Trojans for September 1, 2007.[8] Holt decided to take the game because it offered an opportunity to increase visibility to recruits in the region as well earn Idaho $600,000 for the appearance.[9] However, despite a contract that ran through 2008, Holt departed after two seasons to return to USC, 19 months before the game was played.

I’m surprised so many people are enamored with Holt.

Purdue has the 12th ranked Total Defense in the Big 10 (#92) in the nation.
Not a Holt sycophant by any means, but how do his recruits stack up to other schools? Not saying he'd be top 5 with better recruits, but something to consider.

You’d have to assume most of the staff will go with Brohm and our new guy will bring his own folks in. This is assuming he’s leaving, which is far from certain.

I think you could keep all but the Brohm Bros. But that only matters if you elevate an assistant.

Neal Brown anyone?

I really don’t like speculating when there isn’t a coach to be hired at this point...but I’d be ok with Major Applewhite coming to West Lafayette. Has proven he can win and recruit well at Houston when out of the shadow of Herman.

Also wouldn’t mind giving Jeff Tedford another shot given he likes to throw the ball and his relationship with Aaron Rogers.

Dino Babers does have a Purdue connection so he should be given a long look and his offense is attractive to QB’s and WR’s. Also a good recruiter.

Love Holt, but not for the head coaching job. Rather see Spack come back than have Holt promoted.

I'd seek out former Co-Off Coordinator and Special Teams Coach, Tony Levine, before Holt. The guy impressed me when he was here for a number of reasons. Then wait on Drew Brees to break Mannings records next year
Drew Brees will be coaching someday, I might have thought that Texas would be his choice of school but he is a Boiler thru and thru I think (don’t know though). Does anyone know if he aspires to coach collegiately?

Does he even aspire to coach?

I see politics being a better fit

That’s a good question, I think he does aspire to coach but maybe at the HS level first for his boys? I could see that but The problem is that right now he has all of the knowledge in his brain about the higher level of his game and if you lose that you don’t get it back very easily. Plus he also has an infinite amount of connections for recruiting.

it is very rare that players that are as successful as Brees has been turn out to be good coaches. Also, he has heavily invested in NO's civic affairs and has several business interests in the area.

I could see him coaching his kids HS team like Alstott has done.

Agreed. I can only think of Spurrier. Not successful NFL player but did win Heisman. Maybe Harbaugh too. In the B1G, Fitz, Lovie, PJ, Frost were all pretty good college players..

I have not seen the coaching staff mentioned in reasons why Brohm would stay. How much do you think the assistants like the idea of packing up after 2 years to go to Louisville? I think you could make an argument for keeping everyone except the Brohm brothers and if anything trying to keep some of our recruits to stay committed in particular on defense.

Holt seems to have a way of motivating his players. He took some talented players recruited by Hazel and made them play to their potential (Gelen R, Bentley, Ezechukwu, Bailey). How much can you credit motivation by Holt? If that is the silver bullet, I think that is a compelling reason to promote him to head coach. I hope we can see what he can do with good recruits especially the incoming secondary and GK.

love the guy, but not for HC, seen other programs do that and it never seems to work out.

And sometimes it does...
Dabo Swinney
Jimbo Fisher
Pat Fitzgerald
David Shaw
Mike Gundy

I don't think any of these guys were head coaches at a P5 program when they were promoted.

I also am not stuck on having to find a slinger as HC since Holt will not be calling plays on offense., I think you can address that with the OC.

For S&G, if Holt were to be head coach, what would you think of having Bobby Petrino as OC? He knows the staff well (Holt was his DC) and he has had success as OC in the past and fits our style...

I don't think so. He is probably worth over $200 million, has four young kids that he adores and can pretty much do whatever he wants in New Orleans. Opportunities abound. Why would anyone be willing to coach at a high level with all that going on? I know I would not even consider it.

I know everyone claims to have sources, but one with close Purdue and media ties (you all know who he is from his NCAA tourny picking) is saying Brohm is gone.
If true, that absolutely sucks, but not unexpected.
When does MBob create his wish list of next head coaches?

I'll believe it when I see because I highly doubt at this point and time UofL has even talked to Brohm. He may still leave, but I highly doubt anyone outside of Brohm and his family know where everything stands.

Jerry Palm is a clown if that’s who you’re referring to.

He’s been a compete and utter bedwetter on this Brohm leaving talk. I believe he started pissing down his leg before the season even started.

I really hope he doesn't go into politics, because then a good portion of our fan base and the NO fan base is going to dislike him just because he chose the other side.

Is Peyton Manning currently employed? Think he could recruit offensive players? Maybe he needs a new challenge. On the other hand, why do Purdue fans have such an inferiority complex? So many of you seemed to immediately throw in the towel on Brohm's future as if Purdue is not a destination but, merely, a stepping stone. Personally, I feel that if Brohm is a man of character, he will honor his commitment to Purdue and to his recruits. Hopefully, that is true.

I don't think being a man of character has anything to do with it. Coaches leave, players decommit...it happens.
This is a really unique situation from Brohm and his family. It could be an opportunity that might never come along again, who knows.
Obviously, I want him to stay but I put it about about 80-20 he goes. It is what it is.
