helmet Designs - new ideas

Since it is the off season and there is nothing else to talk about;

1: a more traditional idea. Polished Gold.
I think it would look better if the gold P on the black helmet was a polished reflective gold. I would also like to see them do the same thing for the gold helmet. make it a polished reflective gold like Baylor and ND did.

See link. ( I would not do the chrome gold face mask though, just go with gray or black. So do black instead of green and these are basically the 2 helmets I would like to have)

2. A new idea. I was watching hockey and thinking how much fun the goalie helmets are and was thinking it would be fun to see a helmet like that.

I guess not completely new idea, but something like some of the helmets Maryland wore last year.

Maybe do some type of large train mural that takes of the whole helmet. or include several images that represents Purdue like a train + clock tower+ gears/math + outerspace stuff + ect..

I would prefer just keep it simple and go with option 1. But if Purdue wants to be unique and creative we could get some good ideas for options 2.

First what would be some of your ideas for option 2 I suggested, then what are your thoughts overall on either of these ideas?

I vote for keeping our helmets as is, and focusing our energy on things like winning..sigh.

Purdue's "creative" helmets have mostly all missed the mark. Why continue something that doesn't matter? Creative uniforms and such don't really result in the publicity it used to. Even horrible programs have fancy uniforms these days.

There are other ways Purdue can concentrate on that would at least result in noticeable differences. And that includes people outside of the football coaches (i.e. marketing).

If we do them right I'm all for different helmets and things. Loved the red white and blue last year, hated the neon. Obviously winning is 1st 2nd and 3rd right now, but recruits do look at these other things so they are important to an extent.

I like both of our helmets the way they are. Ditch the cancer, military, and selfie buckets. We don't need a grey uniform either. I would like to see our black helmets with a gold jersey and black pants. That could be neat, but why use grey when its not a school colour. Pretty dumb in my mind.

Apparently my attempt to bring out the creative people on this board and just have a fun creative talk failed.

I appreciate those of you who did respond, even though you ignored my first question and took my post that was supposed to be fun and made it way to serious.

Of course I want the team to win games more than anything and of course it is the players and coaches that matter, but won't we talk about that enough when spring ball starts?

I guess you didn't truly ignore my first question, your responses tell me the idea of a hockey goalie style helmet for a football helmet is a bad idea. Oh well that is why I asked.

Your original idea to return to the polished "Old Gold" colored helmets used by Army and others would sit fine with me! Our black helmet decals need a little fine tuning and I believe the red/white and blue motion P would look great on these! I really don't have a problem with our uniform design and I would love to see what they would look like in Old Gold! I do miss the PURDUE across the front above the numbers on some of our better designs in the past though!

Way past time to get the band to adopt what I believe is the Athletic Department and University's use of the motion P. If there is anything that hurts a brand is too many different logo's. While we are at it, fix the smoke on the Boilermaker Special logo and put the slant P back in the light! JMO

Interesting, our recruiting was a lot better when we had 1 home and 1 away uniform.

And how have our creative uniforms helped recruiting in the short term? I haven't seen a lick of difference in our recruiting success.

Uniforms = important for recruiting is the biggest fallacy and waste of money spun out of control by, shocking, athletic apparel companies like Under Armour, Nike, etc.

I think Purdue certainly can improve with marketing its program, sure. I don't think it's well served by looking at random uniforms being the solution though.

Grad's "polished gold" that he is referring to is the gold chrome helmets that Baylor and USF wore last season, which I think is too pale and lacks any eye-catching color (just like Vegas gold); they sure are shiney though!

I have to say that I think our current football uniforms TEMPLATE is a great look: the design is clean, uncluttered and downright sharp! I love the single stripe on the helmet, pants and jersey sleeve. If they were old gold instead of Vegas gold, the look would be even greater! Our helmet is unique and traditional, we should not change the overall look at all, just go with a richer, bolder color: OLD GOLD!

Tweaking the jersey just a little would improve the look; ditch the contrasting "fly-wire technology" on the collar (looks like our train has wings) and replacing the Nike train with the Speedtrain and down-sizing the Nike swoosh would be ideal, because WE ARE PURDUE, not the "University of Nike". I have a serious issue with the swoosh being way larger than the Purdue logo on the collar! Not really a fan of having PURDUE on the jersey, it makes it too busy.

I LOVE our DIN 1451 Engshreft numeral font: it is readable from a distance, it is unique and when you see it, you know that is is us. If we stick with it, any college football fan will be able identify that numeral font with Purdue. I would add some old gold on the road jerseys, if only to give them more color.

The many reasons to get rid of Vegas gold are to give Purdue Athletics their BEST POSSIBLE LOOK. Vegas gold doesn't translate well across electronic and print media: it looks pale, washed-out, dull and lacking of any color whatsoever:

SEE WHAT I MEAN??

Again, this is about presenting PURDUE ATHLETICS in their best possible light, giving them a great look, GIVING THEM THEIR BEST LOOK!!

And I think PTBO has a great idea, btw: black helmets, black pants with OLD GOLD jerseys! I think it would make our team look like high-dollar movie stars (but hopefully taller than 5' 4"

). I am serious about the old gold jersey though.

It's about putting our BEST FOOT FORWARD!!

Courthouse Carp:

I appreciate your reply, and being one of the few people that understood the point of this thread.

Personally I really like the direction that Purdue is going with their helmets. I also wouldnt be mad if they went to the old gold color as well. Where I differ from others here is I hate the uniform template they have. The number font sucks and makes the uniforms look cheap. If you want a really clean look, go to a font similar to Alabama or Penn St. Also add some more gold to the away jersey. I think the best Purdue has looked was in 98'-04'. They need to wear the gold pant more away, and I think it would look cool to wear gold pants with the black helmet home or away. Just redo the uniforms and keep the helmets as is IMO, and maybe tweak the gold. And get stadium lights!!!!!!!

I guess you missed all the pictures from recruit visits where Purdue coaches laid out all helmets and uniform combinations for the recruits to see. I guess you also missed that the have mannequins set up on the coaches office to showcase all of the uniforms.

Now, should it matter to a recruit? That's a different discussion. But you can absolutely not ignore that it does matter to recruits these days. Hazell sees that and is planning accordingly. It's the way of the world these days. Can't ignore it. Have to keep up with the times.

I personally like this simple look from back in the day, even though I wasn't born then. Remove the stripes on the sleeves so they are all black with just a small number or no number.

I prefer that color of gold over the lighter gold we currently use. I like the black shoes with white socks look. No stripe on the pants.

The colors would look like Army, but they have a thicker helmet stripe and and they have a thick pant stripe.

I am not a fan of too much distraction on jerseys' ala Maryland. I like clean and simple like Penn St.

I would suspect there will continue to be tweaks to the helmets. Hazell likes that, whether it's an entirely new one or different decals.

When we wrote a story on uniforms last year for our football preview magazine, nearly every guy we talked to wanted gray. It's the "cool" alternate color right now.

I'm thinkin' something like this....tying in the whole "diamond in the rough" recruiting thing we got goin' on....

Bring Back the Old Gold Color

This is the color that Purdue needs to return to!

Old Gold

Apparently I am not the only one that would like to see football helmets be more creative.

Thanks for the link. That looks sharp.

Still would like to see a concept that includes a picture of a train or Purdue Pete artistically done, just curious what that would look like.

By all means please ditch the poor excuse for old gold. Our school deserves better than old beige and black. That experiment in bland has failed. I would bet sales of Purdue gear would soar if the real old gold were brought back.
