Do we know why Hammons didn't play this weekend?

I don't take Twitter seriously, but there is (what I am hoping) some garbage floating out there.

It was supposedly a minor infraction of team rules. Seems strange that he's still pulling that kind of crap as a senior with millions of dollars on the line for him at the next level.
Yeah, agreed. Probably late to team meeting or something.

I think there is a lot of value to a pre-season scrimmage against a team you specifically picked to exploit what you believe are your weaknesses.

Then to bench the focal point of the team really reduces the effectiveness of the scrimmage.

I guess, in summary, C'Mon Man.

Or it could be he was feeling ill and coach didn't bother playing him to give him time to rest. It literally doesn't matter at all. It's a nonissue

Indystar says minor team infraction and he will play this weekend. Non-issue.

I don't think this is serious, but it certainly isn't a non-issue when a senior and arguably the most important player on the team violates team rules this close to the season. Focus, maturity, and drive have always been the negatives on AJ, and any infraction of team rules is disappointing. I hope this is AJ being AJ, and his focus will improve as the season progresses, but everyone should expect more from a senior leader.

We have no idea what the cause was. It could be something simple like he over slept. There is zero reason to read more in to it than there is.

If all he missed was a meaningless exhibition game, then that suggests even Painter thought it was a non-issue and did it just to remain consistent.

I agree on all points. The worst part is that this was a scrimmage done in lieu of an open exhibition specifically to get work against a D1 team that has another 7 footer, which we won't see for awhile, and specifically to create matchup issues that the team needed work against. Everything is speculative but it really would be disappointing to learn that the team had to miss out on any kind of experience because AJ violated something small.

I think it's a big deal. He should be a leader of this team and that sets a horrible example.

I'm good with it. Sends a message that no player is bigger than the team and the rules apply equally to all.

It's not a big deal unless it BECOMES a big deal by repeated infractions. AJH hasn't given us any indication in the past that he is a problem. I'll see how it plays out before I call for the cross and nails.

I disagree with your point regarding a meaningless scrimmage. If it were in fact, "meaningless" it would not have been scheduled.

It was scheduled for an intended purpose. The purpose was then jeopardized when the main unit of the team was no longer intact.

I think there have been two times in the past. I'm just going off the top here so I'm sure someone will correct me but I think two years ago he had to miss the first exhibition because he was late to a meeting and there was another time where he didn't start because he was late to the bus. Someone please correct me if that's incorrect.

he posted something to instagram after the social media ban. I don't remember exactly what it said but it seemed like it could have been referencing some sort of loss, maybe a break-up or loss of a family member or something? anybody remember what the post was? maybe his not playing was related to this?

@GoldandBlackcom: #Purdue coach Matt Painter said this morning AJ Hammons is not suspended - “not yet” - but has to “take care of business.”

I don't think it's a huge deal, but disappointed that he would do anything other than what is expected of him. Get it together AJ! It's your last chance to do something special.

Was hoping he had finally grown up in time for what could be a very special season. Time will tell, but this is not the best news.
I agree...wish he were leading this team like Davis...how good would Purdue be?

I guess it's better to correct the problem before the season instead of later. It's time to be a big boy...and I'm not talking tall boy. Hopefully it's a dead issue next week. I want to know what it's like to have a season with no problems. Please.

Could be wrong but I thought he got suspended for weed.

Nah we leave the "buy the weed, sell the weed, smoke the weed" to you Loosiers down south.....

Actually per Dan Dakich, he did get suspended for 2 exhibition games his soph year and he believed it was for weed. Are you saying DD was wrong on what he stated?

AJ then missed the bus to the NW game too. Don't shoot the messenger.

I stopped reading after "per Dan Dakich."
