Haarms enrolling early

any extra time for him to be apart of the Purdue family atmosphere will be huge.....

Lifting, bonding, learning.....all good things......

So if he redshirts for half a season this year, I'm assuming he'd still play the full season next year. Would he still have another semester to redshirt later on if he wanted/needed to?

I can't imaging he would sit out next year, but I really have no idea how the rules work in this case. My guess is he would end up burning the entire redshirt season next semester.

I'd assume the same unless you can take only half a redshirt season and save the rest for later (if needed).

I thought I read somewhere that if an athlete plays at all in a second semester, that year of eligibility is considered expired....and although I am not 100% certain on this, I don't think the semesters can be rolled over for red-shirt purposes......goes by NCAA year. Meaning, if Matt Haarms was enrolled and eligible and played at all in 2017....he'd have three years of eligibility remaining. Now, he would still be able to take a redshirt year later on ....just like Basil Smotherman did.

Redshirting this year burns the full redshirt. He'd then have four years to complete his eligibility starting in 2017-18.

Probably still eligible to apply for the sixth-year waiver down the road if the NCAA is still doing those.

If this is true, he is just enrolling early....I would think the letter of intent/scholarship offer would not be valid until fall of 2017.

I believe your athletic eligibility starts ticking as soon as you enroll regardless of whether you are actually playing anything or not.

Because of his move from Europe, he recently learned that his post-grad year at Sunrise Christian was going to start the clock on his eligibility. As such, he was going to lose his redshirt year whether he did it at Sunrise Christian or at Purdue. Since he was eligible to enroll, it made sense for him to come early and get access to Purdue's facilities and staff.

Is this who CMP was talking about earlier in the year when there was mention of another big joining the team yet this year?

We are very thin, depth wise, as far as bigs go. Is there any chance that he plays this year? I'm guessing no, since we seem to be playing more of a 4 guard line up as opposed to 2 bigs but it could be an option.

I love the possibilities this kid brings to the program. Euro Up! Hammer down!

Haarms schießt für drei .... ja .... es ist gut!

I would think absolutely not. It would waste his year whil adding little to the team. I think we play better with only one big on the floor at a time anyway.

i agree but if we were a little better and thought we had a chance at the final 4 I would seriously consider playing him if I thought it would help.
Btw, the dude on here that is totally in love with JT should be thrilled about this Haarms cat!!!

Doubtful but if this is what CMP was talking about earlier in the year then I would have to think it's a possibility. We are indeed up front with the injury and such. I would think if the kid and staff thinks the kid has NBA potential (again highly unlikely) then that would better the odds.

OB52's a big fan of JT. I hope we all get the chance to see him play. He's got some great tools to work with.
I might be mixing up OldBoiler and PU52. I see a Boilers Rock post and I can't think for days.

This. You get 5 years to complete 4 years of eligibility.

Waivers are given for extraordinary circumstances such as injury, military service, or missionary service.

Who knows? If the kid hits the ground running and surprises everyone, he may play. But I hope he isn't needed.

Does anyone think he should start playing in January? How ready is he to contribute? IF he's good enough to be in the rotation, he should play because that will only help this team.

I don't think we know if he is ready to play. The European system is different so unless we have some European basketball experts we will have to wait and see. Even if he could hit a couple shots in 5, 6 minutes when the bigs are in foul trouble that would be extremely valuable to a high level team.

It seems to purdue is one of the best 8 to 15 teams in the country (we will know much more after saturday) and some kind of front court depth would move purdue up in that range. Saving those foul trouble games makes a huge difference in tounament seeding and actual play.

If haarms or taylor can fill that role it would be great

Hey boilerandy,
do you think that if he hits the ground running and surprises everyone he might play?
Do you also hope that he isn't needed?
Please clarify for us.
Thanks

It would shock me if a 7 ft skinny 18 year old can come in at mid season, start college, learn the system, become familiar with teammates, and become a solid contributor in games. If he can, great! Seems like a lot to ask though and I am normally one the more optimistic of our little collection of genius.

Haarms looks a bit frail, but looks can be deceiving. Ideally Taylor will be able to come back. But if Biggie and Haas have a game were they are both in serious foul trouble early and Painter has to chose between putting VE or Harms at the 5, Haarms might be able to help.

If Haarms could come in and play good defense to give both Biggie and Haas a rest for 2-5 minutes per game..it would be valuable in March to have him play. If he can't do that, it is best that he simply puts in the work in practices and gets some game time when the game can't be decided in the last few minutes (ala Taylor last season). The key is if he can defend effectively for short bursts because Purdue has the skill on the offensive end that his deficiency there wouldn't hurt as bad.

But if he comes on the floor for one minute this year he loses a year of eligibility.

He could still RS next season without penalty. The issue is if he can help THIS SEASON when the front line is thin, he should do so. Next season, with players like Haas, Smotherman, Ewing, and potentially Taylor back (heck, even Vince could play the 5 in a very smal lineup if needed)...Haarms could be given the year to develop and add strength/weight.

I would be shocked if Haarms played one minute this season. We have a team (emphasis: TEAM) that has played together for most of the year. I doubt he could be effective in a 4 weeks of practice. He won't understand the defensive switches or the offensive plays. He would be a liability compared to even Eifert. We have a significant upclass group of players that give us an advantage.

If needed, Matt could go with VE at 6'8", Cline at 6'6", Mathias at 6'5" along with PJT and C-Boggie. Let's face it, we have been beaten by teams with not much more size. Rebounding is a matter of position and not height. Where we lose ground with being smaller is on the offensive end. Going small upends the game planning our opponents do against our big front line, and scrambles the game.
