I have tried to figure out an 8 man rotation for next year with 5 starters.

Harms-Cline-C.Edwards-Eastern

What do you guys think it looks like? Do you think it will be a rebuilding year or is Carsen Edwards going to be good enough to carry Purdue to 20 overall wins?

Thanks for any insight.

I am going to enjoy this year, and hope for the best for next year that they don't fall off the cliff & are still a top 4 team in the B10.

I believe we will be just as good.

as you all know, I compare our team to our opponents rather than ourselves. Sure, we're going to lose a lot of talent, but so will other teams. bridges isn't coming back. JJJ doesn't want to come back.

As we reload, so will our competition. So despite our personnel loses, we should still have enough talent left to beat our foes. Who knows? Haarms might be better than haas? and tre and Dow may be ready to start and dominate. or Hunter could fire away. or we may add a cool transfer. We may even add Tyger.

it's hard to predict our future when we still have 3 outstanding scholarships to give. and we don't know what other star players on other teams are returning or not.

Carsen and Eastern may even step up their games, and we might even be better.

Come on... even better than this year? ... wow.

I love your optimism but I would like to see a breakdown of what the 8 -9 man rotation might look like to help me determine what next year might look like. This doesn't do the trick.

and that's the irony of it all. You're trying to predict next year's success when nobody knows what the make-up of next year's team will be.

Dow has played 1 high school game this year.

Tre dominated I n a recent game.

Hunter beat phinisee.

Taylor might graduate and not return or become injured. people say he's rusty. I say he's had enough h time for the rust to wear off. it is what it is,

.
We still have 3 scholarships that could be given to grad or regular transfers

We might even sign Langford. Stranger things have happened.

there are so many unknowns, to me it seems very silly for people to try to predict what next year will be like.

how about at least waiting until this year is at east half over before worrying about next year?

All of the glasses half empty clowns said we would be worse this year. We are a much better team without Biggie. No one knows how we will be next year.

As a big fan of the program I know next year will be different but I have high hopes and expectations that they will be good. This year good, no. A year to be pretty good with line of sight to a great team, yes.

Why call your fellow Boilers "Clowns"??? It would be a reasonable assumption to most that losing Biggie was a major loss to this year. If it wasn't for the great coaching by CMP, it would have been. I think most the fans and media had thought us 3rd to 4th preseason because of it.

Starters:
Carsen Edwards
Nojel Eastern
Ryne Cline
Aaron Wheeler/Trevion Williams
Matt Haarms

Bench:
Aaron Wheeler/Trevion Williams
Emmanuel Dowuona
Hunter Jr.
Tyger Campbell (if he commits)/grad transfer combo guard

Team is going to be extremely young next season and likely Carsen Edwards averages 20+ a game. Purdue will be a lot like Nebraska is this year except not as offensively challenged. Purdue will struggle with more experienced and veteran teams BUT will likely beat some teams they shouldn’t based on their athleticism and perceived ability to get to the rim.

Eifert could be a guy who, depending on the growth of other players who could see some minutes as well.

Likely Carsen plays 35 minutes on average a night along with Cline and Haarms getting 30. Cline needs to take a major step forward defensively again next season if Purdue wants to not take a major step back on that side of the ball.

My best guess without knowing the schedule next season:
21 wins and a 9 seed in the NCAA’s.

If it wasn't for the great coaching by CMP, it would have been. I think most the fans and media had thought us 3rd to 4th preseason because of it.
You bring up a good point, CMP has done a very good job at coaching this year. He's made fantastic halftime adjustments and is putting the right people in with the right match-ups (barring fouls of course) and has seemingly stepped up his "game" this season.

We are going to stumble along the way for sure, but right now the only team that can be us right now, is us.

You have a 4 man starting 5. And you didn't spell Haarms name correctly.

i predicted that we have a better team this year than last, as i argued that the uptick in athleticism and additional experience will counterbalance the loss in rebounding

However, next year is unlikely to be a better year than this but I still see us as a tourney team

The starters will consist of two seniors and three guys likely to get at least an NBA audition

Carsen
Eastern
Cline
Taylor/Eifert
Haarms

The redshirts will be first off the bench

Carsen's senior year will be an intriguing one. 3 upperclassmen NBA talent - isn't that the formula for tourney success?

My list will be about minutes in order Cline , Edwards , Haarms ,and Taylor will get 25 plus . Williams , Campbell , Eastern , Hunter will get 10 plus . Wheeler could start or he could play less than 10 . Sasha & Grady less than 10 . Dow will redshirt unless Williams weight cause him to redshirt . IMO it will come down to the PG . Eastern , Cline , Edwards , Campbell , Hunter and Sasha could all play minutes there . We will make the NCAA tourney and we will be top 25 at sometime . What the talking heads do not understand Painter has built a program we have arrived ! Other than Haarms , and Sasha every scholarship player is top 150 ranked . Haarms and Edwards will be all B1G Ten and Cline could join them . Eric Hunter and Tyger Campbell will contend for B1G Frosh of the year . We will be good enough to beat anyone and young enough to lose to anyone .

It's really fun to speculate, and next year's team offers all sorts of fascinating combinations. However...

I'll be floored--absolutely floored--if we're as good next year as we are this year. That's not a knock on anyone on next year's team (Truthfully, I suspect we'll surprise a lot of people and be much better than anyone would have guessed).

But this year's team is flat-out awesome. The four seniors we're losing are fantastic. The way they share the ball while remaining confident in their own abilities...that's a rare and wonderful gift for any player, but for a whole group to buy in that way? It's just beautiful to watch.

When a team has trust, it can accomplish wonders.

You can't replace the 4 seniors on this years team and to expect to be as good next year period! Special group of seniors we have this year.Probably gonna be a while before we have another class like this one!

Guys we can't keep off the floor:
Haarms, Edwards, Cline

Guys we can't keep on the bench:
Eastern, Taylor, Tyger

Next 2 (for the 8-man magical rotation)
Williams, Wheeler, Hunter (rut roh - that's 3) One of these (or Taylor) will end-up not playing, for any number of unknown reasons.

Who's left:
Sasha, Eifert, Dow - probably the best "who's left" in the NCAA

With the youth, it may be a year we do play ten. Some years it just fits.

who's left is three unknowns. We have 3 scholarships left. they could be all freshmen. they could be transfers. they could be grad transfers. They even could be starters. GASP !!!! a starter who's a transfer? unheard of !!!!! before predictions and minutes are speculated, I'd like to at least know who the three new additions are. they could make all of this moot.

And regardless of Cline being a senior, I believe Eastern starts ahead of him. And I don't see Taylor or Eifert starting or receiving major minutes based on their performance and usage this year.

I'd also like to see some thought given to our competition. While we're going to be a young team, so will MSU and the rest of the field I don't see a lot of tremendous experienced talent coming back for other teams either. What we need to be is the BEST young team. if we go 32-0, but our stats are horrible and our competition is the worst in a decade, will you still say, yeah, but the 2017-18 team was better and had more talent.

Eastern and Cline do not play the same position, but will play at the same time, a lot.

maybe.... maybe not. A lot will depend on whom we add. I still see Cline coming off the bench next year as a 6th man instant offense assassin. ,. And I could easily see Painter signing a grad transfer guard and grad transfer big man who may both start. and I could see Taylor graduating and leaving. there are a lot unknowns.

We will need Cline's shooting in the starting lineup.

I will just say we will need another outside shooter to add to our starting line-up. We have 3 scholarships left. I seriously doubt Painter will end up with a class of 6 freshmen. I have to believe 1-2 of those players will be transfers.

Cline is a great outside shooter. but if Painter were to sign a great outside shooting SF grad transfer, I believe as a team, we'd be fine if Cline remained in the role he's currently in.

I mean yea if we get a better player then cline might not start, but currently cline is the starter. I think our starters will be Eastern, Edwards, Cline, (someone), and Haarms.

If we get another SF that would start, then I think the lineup goes to Edwards, Cline, (New SF), (Someone), and Haarms. I'll be shocked if Cline isn't starting.

Haarms, Edwards, Eastern, Cline- a lot of minutes

Taylor (is healthy) will get quality minutes.

Then you got Sasha, Wheeler, Hunter, and our 2 bigs. Obviously we probably won't use a 10 man rotation, so likely one of the bigs gets shirted.

For a big man, Williams is very quick. He will be too green to play a big role next year initially. He has the potential to make an impact by the end of the year. Don’t sleep on him.

The obvious starters are Haarms, Edwards, Eastern, and probably Cline. They know the system, and can lead the offense and defense. Likely Taylor will start at the 5, with Haarms at the 4. So who is at the First guy off the bench? My gut says it is Wheeler, but I don’t have a good feel for the freshmen coming in. Maybe Tiger is good enough to play 10-15 minutes?

In any case, it will be fun watching how the team develops. I think we will develop an even greater appriciation of the 4 seniors we have now. Nothing like having good upper class men.

In my initial post, I had completely left Carson off my starters list... brain fart! Thanks to boilersss for catching that!

You don't have Edwards as an obvious starter?... interesting

I am going to store this sentence to post about 30 times next year.

I love it .. simple wisdom.
I said that exact same thing the first time I saw the Baby Boilers play. It certainly rang true as they went on to lose to Wofford I think the very next game, but of course won their fair share of games including at the Kohl Center.

I think next year we will see an expanded rotation. Especially early. Painter has gone back and forth on how many he regularly plays, but I think he fits it to his roster. Next year might be one where the rotation stays robust.

If, and that is still an if, we get Tyger, and no other additions are made, I see the rotation as follows:

Starters
1 Nojel
2 Carsen
3 Ryan
4 Trevion
5 Matt

Bench in order of minutes:
1 Tyger
2 Aaron
3 Taylor
4 Sasha
5 Hunter

If Taylor can't take that step up, then Dow gets minutes. I like the prospects of Haarms and Williams together. One to protect the rim and the other to clean up on the boards. Of course, having Wheeler at the 4 makes for a team that should be able to get up and down the court pretty quick. It will be fun seeing how it all comes together.

I think you are underestimating Cline. He has averaged 20 minutes per game the past two years and has shown he is more than an outside shooter. Had had a bug of clutch plays. Putting too much stock in who starts and who is first off the bench. I think Cline can pick up minutes. Think of Ryan Smith his senior year. I think Sasha can fill the role of the sharp shooter off the bench. I am not sure we can find someone that would be an improvement over Cline wiling to transfer here with the guards we have of Eastern - Carsen - Cline - Sasha and no we are NOT getting Romeo.

I agree. I would be more than happy to have the Senior Cline starting and playing big minutes. He has come a long ways this year and I will expect even more next.

I also think we struck gold with Jon Octeus and then after we got John Hill there was an expectation we can pick up meaningful starters from grad transfers. I think that is a rare find (and Octeus came in when we had a real void) and we should expect more of the Spike and Sterling Carter type of players as grad transfers. I think Tyger could pick up some minutes if he decides to come here but do not expect any meaningful minutes out of any other new scholly players we are targeting. I am speculating based on what we know now our 8 man rotation will be (based on minutes)
Carsen
Haarms
Cline
Williams
Eastern
Dowuona
Hunter
Sasha
