Has anyone heard this?

This was on twitter so take it with a grain:

NEWS: Duke forward Mason Gillis has entered the transfer portal. Gillis will need a waiver to gain eligibility for the 2025-26 season. Per On3 reports, Gillis wants to reunite with Matt Painter at Purdue to compete for a title. All options are on the table though.

First off: Most likely not true

Second: I don't think he would get much playing time this time around

Third: I'd still take him back in a heartbeat, he left last year when we were over-signed. Not an issue now. If he would take a small role, he's more likely to contribute something than our walk-ons. All in for next year.

Speaking of rosters , any news on Harris Cox or TKR. If we don’t hear anything that’s a good thing right ? Gillis could be a player coach kind of impact. Don’t see minutes though unless it’s at the expense of someone here. Sometimes too many is not good

If a player of Gillis's caliber is willing to be hid on the roster and available if there is a injury. Great. He shouldn't come in expecting a big role

This is a joke made because agents are telling guys with no eligibility to enter the portal and apply for a waiver anyway. There was a post about Hummel entering the portal as well, with a graphic and all lol
Thank you for bringing sanity back here….every third guy announcing they are in the portal has tapped out their eligibility. They are hoping for a waiver or ruling against the NCAA that gives another bonus year.

The NCAA, if smart, would come out immediately and say 4 years is it and end this. They opened the can by allowing COVID years and this stupid JUCO ruling.

Article explaining it here

I guess when in doubt, sue the NCAA because you'll probably win.

Who told you not to enter the portal???

Perhaps, in today's world of insanity, a 6+ year player could identify as a 3 year player and request 2 years of eligibility. There is some stupid court (in East or West coast) that would grant it.

If I were a player I'd challenge the ruling on years of eligibility. I'd argue that if I'm a student in good standing attending classes towards a degree, I should have the opportunity to participate in intercollegiate sports.

That argument would have enough traction to not get laughed out of court.

A student could take five years to get a Bachelor's degree and another 1-4 years for a Masters or Doctoral degree, all while attending classes full time.

Plenty of smart lawyers out there that I'd be pretty surprised if this isn't attempted.

Define your attending classes full time please. How many semester hours must be taken to be considered a full time student?
Whatever a reasonable amount would be. 6. 9. Probably not less than 6. Most schools already have a number don't they?

But that would be subject to debate.

I wonder how Mason feels about the last year given how it played out. I don't blame the kid at all and hope he got paid well and loved the university. That he almost made it there again is pretty amazing. Guessing he didn't play as much as he'd thought but hard to know in advance that you've got 2 lottery pick freshman to try to beat out. We missed his toughness and pick setting quite a bit. He would have been more of a help here I think given our team makeup but that's the way it goes. Maybe he'll discuss it down the road a bit.

I think he knew exactly what he was getting into at Duke. Regular minutes off the bench and a team leader in the locker-room. I also think that his level of help here is vastly different if Jacobsen doesn't get hurt.

I think you get in the situation in which you could have guys in their mid 20s playing against teenagers. Thought there was something in the ncaa guidelines that wanted to keep a level playing field with respect to age thus the 5-year eligibility.

If you allow guys to play in the mid 20s that can't be safe for football especially (yeah I get there are already some outliners currently).

Actor Phil Morris was in the classic Star Trek episode "Miri". He's lower right in the dirty purple shirt. You might also recognize Kim Darby (True Grit) and Michael J Pollard (Bonnie & Clyde). They're the two older childeren upper left.

Good stuff, Mr_Scott.

As a young actress, Kim Darby more than held her own alongside John Wayne in True Grit. One of my favorite scenes is her taking to task the ever exasperated Colonel Stonehill, played by one of the all-time quintessential character actors, Strother Martin.

The kid in the military uniform also played Barney's cousin on the "Andy Griffith Show".

Strother Martin - always enjoyed his memorable portrayals. And a native of Kokomo, Indiana, to boot!
