Jon Rothstein visited Duke and posted some notes, one which said it looks like Gillis will start for Duke at the start. Surprised me,, with all they had back and their big recruits, I thought he would be at best the 6 or 7th man for them.

Someone’s gotta protect the overall number 1 pick!

They lost a LOT!
Top 2 scorers Jared McCain and Kyke Filipowski were drafted
3. Roach and 4. Mitchell transferes
Basically get one starter at guard (Proctor) and their returning sixth man and that is about it. Lose more than 80% of scoring. They gave Gillis a LOT of $ as they valued his leadership and experience. Happy to see him start.

He’s tough as nails, a consistent rebounder and a GREAT spot up shooter. He’s gunna get all the open looks in the world with Flagg getting tons of attention.

Haha. My first thought was “oh my God, is that Mason Gillis’ music?!?”

Good news! Our 6th man from last year is slated to be a starter for a highly touted Duke. Kind of a nod to last year’s team I think. Happy for Mason!

The extra year or two the NCAA granted players killed us in BB.
I don't think we would have lost in round one last year and our chances of winning it all this year would have went up drastically.
IMO

Mason is one of my favorite boilers ever. If Purdue doesn’t win it all next year, I’ll be pulling for Mason. Not really Duke so much, but for Mason to win the NCAA title.

Hard for me to support Duke no matter what.

Might have to grit my teeth though, and do just that, if they do happen to earn their way to a FF.

Gillis could be that missing piece to combine with their young talent. I still view him as a player/coach. I don’t expect to see him put up big individual stats. I do expect to see help his team win games.

His career stats of 6.5 and 4 while shooting 40% in 20 mins will be exactly what Duke needs.

Exactly. I could see those type of stats. I could see him hitting a few game winning shots. I could also see him becoming a very successful coach when his career is over. He’s smart, knows the game, knows how to motivate others and will have played for two very fundamentally sound programs. He has his degrees! He has a tremendous career in front of him.

Gillis is one of my favorite Boilers. That said, there is no way I will want Duke success of any kind. I live in the Carolinas, so I have good reasons. I hope he personally does well and gets solid education too.

He’s pretty into finance and investing, wouldn’t be surprised if he goes that route.

Hadn't thought of it but maybe. I think most of those guys go to law school, or at least they used to but Mason would likely excel there if he were inclined.
I was reminded of Eugene Parker becoming a very successful sports agent. Gillis definitely has the intelligence to pursue that career if he wants.
