Is still an issue but with Jones and not Morton we are in much better shape. Seems to me Painter knew exactly what he was looking for in the portal even though many were not happy with the signing - tough guard with decent handles who can play D and make an open mid range jumper. This team looks considerably better to me than last year - exhibit A) Jones, exhibit B) Heide and exhibit C) Colvin. Heide and Colvin are the athletes we have lacked in the past - come tourney time they may just get us to the Final Four!

I need to dig out ( I won't) the old thread on press break. Painter has changed it up this year. You want a ball handler taking the ball out, not a big. I thought they looked better against the press last night. They need to turn it up one more notch and look for a quick score when pressed. Best way to get a team to stop pressing.

Completely agree. They showed flashes of it last night. Break the press aggressively and attack the basket on the other end.

I was listening on the radio while driving and heard Heide actually attacked the press and even though he missed, it was good to hear we didn’t just pull it back and let the defense reset.

Certainly had players being more assertive, although there is still a slight tendency to want to dribble through it - also saw some fowards coming up to help. Jones can certainly help too. Positive signs, yes, but we will see how they handle it when it's a more consistent pressure - it will come, but I like what I've seen so far, although it's a limited sample size right now.

Jones did also. I think it was obvious that they have been working on attacking instead of just getting past 10 second line and holding up. Smith came down, pulled up for a 3, missed and Edey got the rebound. Robbie mentioned it when it happened that it was good to see them being aggressive and Edey can run the floor so no need to wait for him.

That’s great to hear. Hope we do it against better opponents. Doesn’t have to be every time, but when opportunity presents itself I hope we take advantage.

Matt has traditionally had a 3 man and sometimes a 4 take it out, but the real improvement is having Lance....another ball handler that is quick to help Braden as well as Fletcher and Myles and Camden. Lance is the biggie though.

On the depot site another poster talked about the ball getting in the corner and also implied the press was a concern. Since I already typed a comment on that thread, I'll paste it here for anyone that is bored and wants something else to read, ;)

I have "dry eyes" and although I had contacts in, I think the Xiidra created a little cloud under my contacts. That said, I was able to see a 2-2-1 zone press that last year caused some issues. Sometimes it was easy to see the zone and sometimes they matched up a bit man if an offensive player was close enough to match up and once the ball got inbounds they were in the 2-2-1. Not a biggie...that approach happens a lot and has for decades.

Sometimes it was a straight up man press and in that case a clear out is best if you have a good enough ball handler to handle it on his own. I always thought a man press was more about fatigue than anything...especially if the offensive team relies on the same person to bring the ball up. When that happened the other Samford players not on the ball stayed close enough to the Purdue ball handler that should the Purdue Players leave too much distance to the guy (Braden) from where they are it would allow the Samford player to run and jump Braden (FDU did this some last year). Mostly, the Purdue players did not abandon Braden enough that a person was going to leave the Purdue guy and double team Braden. That may have happened once successfully...maybe across from the score table and another time the guy left but he never got to Braden quick enough to trap. Having Lance with some quickness is huge for Purdue and should make pressing Purdue much less effective when he is on the court with Braden IMO. Hopefully I can watch it on TV in a bit and perhaps see some things clearer, but many times the camera doesn't show enough court to see exactly what is going on.

Ralph was the one that said that line, Johnny didnt join until Bobby left, thus wasnt on that song. Come on now Ralph, you should know this, after all, you are a Stone Cold Gentleman.

Haha......after the last couple of years, I am not assured of knowing anything......but I appreciate the sentiments....
